George Shea announces that Sonya Thomas and Miki Sudo (billed as the world's top 2 female eaters) will compete in the West Virginia Three Rivers Festival Pepperoni Roll Eating World Championship in Fairmont, WV on May 25.

    Does Juliett Lee still eat for MLE ?..I would have to say that Lee is probably the 2nd best female eater. Sudo could catch her very soon. Whenever the top female eaters are brought up Lee seems to be the forgotten one

    Miki is good, but you don’t eat in one qualifying event and then get dubbed the number one or number two in the world, ahead of proven, ranked eaters like Juliet who have busted their butts for the I.F.O.C.E. for years. Actually, you areonly as good as your last event in M.L.E’s eyes. If Sudo somehow beats Thomas July 4. M.L.E. will proclaim Sudo the greatest female eater of all time and will want Thomas only to stick around to make Sudo look good, at least at the table. If I was Sonya Thomas I would simply not show up on July 4, quit M.L.E. and let them have their new greatest female eater who ever lived, while Sonya enjoys the freedom of eatng when and where she wants. Her record precedes her.

    Depending on who else is there, it may not be advantageous or sufficiently lucrative for Sonya or Miki to do this. Pat, last year’s dominant winner with 33, X, Matt, and possibly Adrian Morgan and Bob Shoudt are all probably better at this than the best ladies. Isn’t this food about jaw strength? If so, the guys have a distinct advantage.

    Playing Devil’s advocate (actually, being a realist), if you don’t win the event, or get second place money, who really cares who finishes third or lower)? The eaters may remember, but not the public and surely not the media. As good as the ladies are, who wants to go just to not be too far behind the winner—-to be remembered for a “respectable” showing, and to further enhance the performance of the male winner by being added to his casualty list?

    You can’t be serious, and if you’re serious, you’re mistaken.

    Rhonda, you keep trying to carve out a wider argument that somehow women are not meant to be as good at competitive eating as men are. Talk to a dentist. Jaw strength varies subtlely from person to person, but even then the differences are so minute (because as a species we evolved to have relatively the same jaw strength) that the effects of the difference are inconsequential. Even if that were not so, you are implying that every man has greater jaw strength than every woman, that the weakest-jawed man has a stronger jaw than the strongest-jawed woman, which of course of is crazy.

    Furthermore, this contest is not about jaw strength. It’s about eating.

    I think it would be a 6hr drive from where Seiken lives. If the contest starts at 6pm he would have to stay overnight. Not a wise choice or investment unless someone pays his gas tolls and hotel

    You are correct Sonya is being kept around to make Sudo look good. Sonya will have to lose by wide margins to Miki in any head to head competition before they start writing her off . Nathans and Buffalo will tell the story. If Sonya loses both contests to Miki, then i suggest she align with Kobayashi where she can make more money as an independent eater. In another year or so Miki Sudo will take over and remain champ for a very very long time

    I’m confused can someone name one food, oysters, hot dogs, chicken wings, or any other food, where Miki Sudo has eaten more than Sonya Thomas? I’ve been checking the data base and can’t find even one instance. Even Miki’s recent performance in hot dogs, Sonya still has her beat by six and half hot dogs. Isn’t that about a plate? Pretty wide margin. Pepperoni Rolls will be interesting but Sonya’s still the favorite, no matter how you add it up. Sometimes, I think Miki and her friends are setting Miki up for a huge case of overexpectations. Let the poor girl eat before you go out and start handing her belts, titles and trophies. The way you guys downplay and demean Sonya Thomas, Miki’s friends are going to make Miki her look like a laughingstock if she doesn’t beat her badly at Nathan’s or anywhere else. Believe me, Sonya’s not a pushover (only the best women eater in history) and you must be an idiot or ignorant if you think otherwise.

    Seriously OJ? The best you got is comparing Miki Sudo of 2013 to Sonya Thomas of 2006? That’s the best you can do? That Miki is only as good as Sonya was seven years ago? I mean what was Sonya eating at Nathan’s at the time, like 27 hot dogs? Today she can 46 hot dogs. Don’t you think Sonya’s improved just a little bit since 2006? Don’t ya? Under that argument Miki will never improve herself, and will lose to Sonya at her ability level. My point is, give Miki some time and let’s have her actually eat against Sonya before you start comparing her, or saying she’s better than, the best women eater in the world or history of competitive eating. It’s not fair to Miki. It’s not fair to Sonya.

    Anony 2:42 — Sonya Thomas is older than 43 buddy. She ate 45 hot dogs on a whim at Nathan’s last year simply to match her age. So, that probably gives you an idea of how many hot dogs senior citizen Thomas plans on eating this year. So, I hope Miki Sudo can eat at least 47 hot dogs over Thomas or it’s going to be a pretty embarrassing flight home particularly after Sudo’s support of her friends trashing of Thomas and other eaters over the last several months. In addition, even if Sudo actually achieves number one status she and friends constant trashing of other eaters is going to make it a pretty lonely island for Sudo in MLE circles. Particularly, when her past inevitably gets out and no established eaters step up to her defense.
