    Only some of the ignorant morons on this site that know very little about medicine will believe it. Very few will actually die from low potassium levels. It was only a symptom of the actual cause of her death. Same way large intake of sugar is not the cause of diabetes

    Only a full autopsy report will be conclusive to the cause of death. Until then, anything reported by fans friends or what have you, is speculative

    Nah i doubt she was water training . Wasn’t her thing. But binge eating has alot to do with it. Check out her video restaurant challenges over the last 5yrs puts everything into perspective. Beast Bertoletti Pete and others have engaged in the same but they are fortunate. This is only the beginning

    We all know training is dangerous but we do it anyway.Water training is very dangerous and doctors have said it lowers potasium levels.This could be the start of the end of organized contests.

    I will not post my name because it will just bring on the trolls but i took part in a challenge several months ago which included an over abundance of deli meat rolled into a sandwich. After the first few hrs everything seemed ok but it was the calm before the storm. Violent stomach pains the likes of which i would not wish on my worst enemy. Consistent runs for the next few hrs and accompanied by pains of death. Women going into labor go through worse but this was right there with it. Finally subsided the next morning after heaving which i should have done immediate after the challenge. For those that refuse to believe that throwing up is the right way to go after a challenge instead of shitting it out , you are dead wrong . The minor throat or acid damage you might incur does not hold a candle to possible botulism or food poisoning And all that for what? Free meal?

    When she fainted she hit her head and that killed her. Thats what the doctor who did the autopsy said. She fainted from low potassium. She wasn’t chugging water or whatever to train. It was a freak accident. I know because I was the last person to see her alive and I was there when they took her body away. I woke up Tuesday morning with her in my arm looking up at me smiling. I kissed her goodbye and left for work. She was happy and looked fine. When I came back she was dead and the police where there. Her roommate found her on the floor with blood coming out of her head and had called 911 but she was already dead. They carted her away to Albuquerque for an autopsy. The cause of death wasn’t released until her mother drove from LA to Albuquerque to hear it in person. Then she was cremated. If you need more than that you can email me questions.     The police already investigated it. In New Mexico any unattended death is treated as a crime untill cause of death is known which it is now. When they were at the house though they did a full investigation including taking statements from me and her roommate and taking pics of everything.

    Steph didn’t water train. She did spend hours at buffets. She always had problems with low iron and potassium. She fainted around me a few times because of it. It was always scary. Nobody should be talking shit about her, for all I know she still hated me and I still hoped she was happy and was upset to hear the news.

    She did not leave the organization on good terms from what i heard. Antolini called her out for being selfish and undevoted when she wore the disguise in some non sanctioned event. I doubt she apologized because that wasn’t her style . I would think he said what he had to say on the phone , she didn’t respond or probably hung up on him. Screw them and that slave contract

    The fact that she died from passing out accompanied by a fatal head injury is about as freak accident as you can get. The low potassium issue should have been looked into right away which would have possibly saved her life .

    Hello this is Stephanie’s aunt, I am reading some of these messages some are good and some are bad but John is not the person that you need to go to for answers. John was her boyfriend for a short period he is not her family. Her death was not caused by foul play and that is the only thing anyone really needs to know. Her parents and her family are going through a difficult time right now. I would really appreciate it if you could respect us enough to give us some privacy and let us and especially her parents mourn without needing to hear any negativity. I am very sure her really true friends would not appreciate it either.

    Perhaps it would be good to close comments about Stephanie and allow her family and friends to grieve privately. If her aunt wishes to send an address to which to which people could send a note or card, (only if she thinks that is a good idea), that would give anyone who knew her a way to express their condolences person to person.

    This is an eating blog so of course it is an appropriate forum to honor and discuss a deceased member of the competitive eating family. The shameful thing is that some want to use this post for dirty laundry that has nothing to do with Stephanie directly.

    It is sad that Stephanie never had the chance to get blood work done once a year if indeed she did have past fainting spells. Competitive eating is not the healthiest hobby to have. It is tragic to lose your life at such a young age no matter how it happened. Dear Stephanie, rest in peace. You were a good person, adored by most who were lucky enough to spend time with you.
