“The Gal” on video

A video clip of “The Gal” can be seen at http://www.ntv.co.jp/news/asx_dai2/060418037_300k.asx as part of a segment in which three females attempt eating challenges. “The Gal” appears at the two and a half minute mark and eats 8 pounds of noodles with chopsticks in 15 minutes. The other challenges are fried rice and shisk-kebabs.

In other Gal news, she did a hamburger eating contest at a slot machine hall and ate 5 Mack hamburgers (short for McDonald’s ?) in a minute, showing speed eating ability for the first time. There was a separate contest for men in which Nobuyuki Shirota (translated as white rice field) won by eating 10 hamburgers in 3 minutes.

The Gal is awesome. IFOCE should put together a series of events pitting her against Sonya.

I am delighted and very happy to (hopefully) have been wrong about the future of competitive eating residing solely in the US with the epicenter being New York. Perhaps there will indeed be contests in which my favorite eater, Sonya Thomas, can compete with Japanese women (and men), and I have already offerred my services as personal assistant and translator to her. She personifies good sportsmanship and should be the role model for all. If only we could clone her behavior.

I also wish to thank Trencherpeople for helping me to continue my study of Japanese with links to Japanese tv. That is really terrific.

Regarding the translations, as everyone can see, computer program translations have a long way to go. However, I offer this little tidbit, and am, as always, happy to be corrected. I do not pretend to be an expert on Japan, rather I am a self-taught, in the moment, experiential observer and participant in Japanese society with an extensive library and a home base in Belmont, MA.

Regarding Japanese names……yes…..the punchline is coming slowly as befits Japanese very circular communication, verbose and often with not much information…………I would have to see the actual Kanji characters for Shirota to be sure, but in everyday use, shiro means white and ta or da means field, usually in the sense of rice paddy though actually the characters for rice paddy combine the characters for water and field. Hence, Shirota could be translated as white rice field, though Japanese names generally are not used as literal translations. Thus, I have never heard of a Japanese whose last name is Shirogomi but again, I am always willing to be corrected.

May as many eaters as possible compete in the Land of the Rising Sun, and any and all are welcome to ask for information or help on navigating.

    Best,

    Crazy Legs Mom

Hi BB. Though Sonya may not be my VERY favorite eater, she is one of my favorites. And she is certainly at the top of the heap when it comes to talent. This woman called the gal might be the best female Japan has to offer, but competitive eating is not a gender-specific sport. That’s a major reason why I like it. So it would be inappropriate for this GAL to compete against Sonya just because Sonya is the same sex. Frankly I think there are probably at least a 15 or 20 eaters in the US who are better than this woman. And Brian you or Krazy Kevin might even stand a chance in against her in Pickles!

Anyone that viewed the video have any idea if the Gal ate those noodles plain or were they dipped in some type of broth? They appear to be Udon noodles which you can buy in a chinese market for a dollar a package which is 16oz worth pre cooked and ready to eat. I usually make them in a chicken broth for flavor. I have been eating noodles for years but never got the opportunity to display that talent at the table.
