Thomas Gilbert sets Battle of the Bone record
The Battle of the Bone website reports that Thomas Gilbert set a record at Wednesday’s qualifier in Anthem, Arizona by eating 3 pounds and 5 ounces of wings, defeating 2008 Nathan’s Arizona Mills qualifier runner-up David Cohn by over a pound. It is not clear from the website pictures if Thomas Gilbert is Tom “Goose” Gilbert. The contest rules ban professional eaters and former or current members of Major League Eating.
update The blog entry about the contest has been updated to say that the results are under review.

How is it not clear, that’s Goose, 100% sure on that.
He said he wanted to win this comp this year, looks like it should be a walk in the park.

Thank Him … Now they either open the door to the rest of us . Or he will be sitting at home on the day of the finals .
It ‘s not that we don’t like Tom .. It’s Battle to the bone was such assholes to all eaters. Last year.

If Sean “Flash” Gordon can eat and win a Shoo Fly Pie amateur contest; why wonder how can Tom “Goose” Gilbert compete and win this contest. We all know rules are for losers. Break the rules, win the money, and then cash the check before they catch you. And they complain about Dale Boone ?!?

If Gilbert wins the Grand Prize of 2009 Harley Davidson XL883 with a retail value of $11,047.50 then he is commiting a fraud and should be ratted out..

I know all food should be weighed in CE. And, I’m glad this competition used weight rather number of wings. But out of curiosity, about how many wings would you estimate that to be? Anbody know?

According to the USDA Nutrition web site, a roasted whole chicken wing (drum & paddle) with the bone removed averages 34 grams of meat and skin. Tom ate about 1503 grams, divided by 34, yields 44. 44 times 2 for the two halves = 88 wings.

Wasn’t aice about independent eaters? Didn’t most skirt plenty of rules saying they weren’t pros because they weren’t under contract? APE is a different story all together. Oh the good old days before people lost their minds.

I registered, & was called back & told that I wouldn’t be allowed to compete & Goose has been disqualified.
I still don’t understand how the reigning champ can compete. How are you not a pro if you won a 2 yr lease on a Honda Element or the $7,500. cash equivalent?

1. Three pounds, 5 ounces = 53 oz.
2. Ave meat weight of a wing = .5 oz.
3. 53 oz / .05 oz = 106 wings.
That’s how they do it at Buffalo WingFest each year, and it seems about as accurate as you’re going to find.

To be a pro, does that mean you win or get paid to eat? With that rule, many in IFOCE, who have not won any money, are not pros either.

I always thought the term pro implied that a person earned enough money from a given vocation to make a living. Applying that logic, the only people I can even begin to envision in that status is Koby and possibly Joey (in a good year).
But even those two do CE as a pastime. So does CE really have ANY pros? I really don’t think so. It’s too small and lacks the purses for eaters to earn enough to make a living at it.
The only possible pros in the business of CE are George and Rich.

The “Goose” has responded to his critics.
He says he tried to get into Nathan’s at Coney Island but the IFOCE said he was not good enough.
He also says he told everyone he was a professional before the contest but they wanted him to eat anyway so he says it is not his fault THEY broke the rules.
He also says he made no money as an eater. He says he spent more than he made so since the $11,200 he won was was not making a living, this was more his hobby and not a profession.
The recent actions and words of the “Goose” make BB and Don Lerman look like incredible professionals.
