How about giving us the total winnings of all 2010 competitors regardless of affiliation and including independent eaters. Let’s assume Chestnut got appearance fees so makes a living that way as well. No way to know how much any eaters made with appearance fees including Kobayashi.

How does this number compare to previous years?

thanks oj, but I second Mega Munch’s request. That number (money wise) seems way down compared to previous years.

I thought “it is what it is” meant not that it was bs, but that numbers do not lie. Perhaps that is what anony 9:58 means, that MLE’s puffed up figure does not tally with the numbers oj listed. I second that. I choose numbers over spin. That is what is great about this site. It isn’t speculation, just some facts, some very important ones.

“It is what it is” is really another way of saying accept the bullshit for what it is because you or anyone else does not have the power to change it. Thats how i percieve that phrase. Others might have another viewpoint

Yes, that could explain the difference in numbers of earnings for eaters and perhaps, as someone else said, MLE made up the difference for themselves (and Chestnut) via the Pepto contests and some sandwich making.

$138,250 total in contest payout and of that OJ has Joey’s winnings at $31,500 yet according to http://ifoce.com/news.php?action=detail&sn=834 Joey made $218,500? That’s some serious sponsorship money!

Wow, over $600,000 payed out to the MLE eaters. Sure would be nice to see those more than 25% reflected in winnings that everyone can see. Guess those top 20 eaters are making a lot more than we think. Good job!

North Pole, I do not think over $600,000 has been paid out to MLE eaters if I understand the posting correctly.
“Summing the cash purses for the 2010 competitions listed on the IFOCE contests page results in a total of $138,250. In Patrick Michels’ article for the Dallas Observer, George Shea claims the total prize value is $550,000.” Also see 11:52 am and oj 12:40. Oj is a stickler for statistical accuracy. If you did the homework and checked the earnings via his All 2010 Money Winners, you could easily see what the top 20 in MLE earned in 2010, even all of the ranked eaters. I am guessing that almost all eaters earnings actually decreased by a significant amount regardless of ranking except for Joey with his sponsorship.

Hmm, I was refering to the page at MLE that said “Major League Eating provided a total of more than $600,000 in prize money, appearance fees and endorsements for its eaters in 2010. For information on Major League Eating, including upcoming events…” http://ifoce.com/news.php?action=detail&sn=834
I was trying to point out that that only about 25% was in actual winning acording to the accurate totals OJ has provided. MLE is saying that they paid about $460,000+ ($600,000+ – $140,000) in appearance fees and endorsements to thier eaters. Of that $460,00+ in appearance fees and endorsements, Joey got $186,250 of it. Leaving $273,750+ for the rest of the eaters.

Hmm says Hmm. While those eaters are not likely to disclose here nor should they as it is their private earnings, I am hugely skeptical. Think about the top five, top ten, top however many. From what I have read, only two eaters have made a living wage from eating, Joey and Kobayashi. Comments in the past have said eaters should band together and ask for what they want. They may not get it but asking nicely as a group might get some reasonable response. If that $273, 750 plus is true, I guess they are indeed doing very well. PR is what MLE does very well in some areas but throwing out numbers which cannot be checked by reporters is suspect.
