“Unfinished Beef” fails to make streaming ratings chart

Entertainment Strategy Guy has a post about viewership for competitions that were streamed online with a section about Netflix’s “Unfinished Beef” hot dog eating contest between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi on Labor Day. The audience was too small to make any streaming ratings chart.

So that’s the real sports. Now let’s talk not-so-real sports: Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef, Netflix’s latest foray into sort-of sports specials. This year, instead of competing in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition (due to a sponsorship dispute), Joey Chestnut signed up for a Labor Day special on Netflix.

It didn’t make any of the ratings charts I track. It didn’t make Netflix’s global charts, either, so it either had less than 2.5 million hours or less than 1.5 million views global.

And I didn’t hear anyone talking about it either. The usual argument for these specials is all the free earned media that Netflix can get, but this rebuts that. I did a Google search a week later, and there were very few articles about Joey Chestnut setting a new record. There were a handful, mostly from the trades or Netflix itself.

I have not seen any official audience statistics from Netflix for “Unfinished Beef” and they have announced no plans for any future eating contests.

They should have put the 10 minute contest on free youtube after the live broadcast.
I’m old and have no need for pay streaming services.
I could’ve swung the fee to watch, but would’ve had to cancel the membership right after. I’m too lazy for that. lol.

Everything is so expensive and nobody cares. We need new leadership. This is getting old.

Anyone who thought that what they tried to do on ESPN would get some great ratings is delusional. Just like all the “eaters” doing food challenges that think they will be rich and famous. They are literally delusional. There is no place in the market outside of the big established eaters on YouTube (Beard, Randy, Joel, Erik, etc). This is common on YouTube across all topics for videos. Not just eating.

Netflix didn’t display the special on their homepage or in recommendations. I had to search the library to find it even while the contest was live.

Guys, the reason it failed is because it didn’t feature the best eater on the planet – Jack. Don’t you guys understand this guy is the best out there. He is undefeated in food challenges, except the ones he’s lost and didn’t post. He’s also undefeated in contests, except the ones he’s lost and didn’t post. Now he won’t go to any contest that isn’t amateur only. It’s just not fair for the best eater on the planet. But he’s doing it for entertainment and restaurant promotion! Jack can I get some of that weigh loss coaching you offer?

8:57 am. Your comment, a long one, is just vitriol. It has nothing to do with the topic.
