Urban Honking crabcakes writeup

Liz has uploaded her writeup and gallery of Saturday’s crabcake contest in Baltimore.

According to Liz, Sonya will attend the Philadelphia qualifer (which Joey Chestnut also apparently intends to compete in) and not the Norfolk qualifier she won last year.

Liz also has instructions on how to attend the taping of Don Moses Lerman’s attempt at the bologna record on Saturday. Tickets are needed, but free.

Liz those are “beautiful” photos of the crabcake contest. . You should be if not already the official IFOCE photographer. Wish you were with us in the late 90’s or 2001 when the organization was in full swing

Thanks for the info Joey. The Philly qualifier was almost shaping up like a mini Coney Island — early. Good luck in SF or Vegas, not that you’ll need it.

Wow, JC couldn’t get a spot. Say Joey had not registered at all – would the IFOCE shut out their #3 guy?

LOL… Hot dog buns?? I bought I couple different types of buns and none felt like the ones used in the contest. There are many different types of buns, some much slower than others. What brand is closest to what is used by Nathan’s?
    thanks

i was just wondering…. since I don’t have a spot anywhere, could I just show up as a reporter covering the event and get a seat at the table.
I’ve seen other events where the reporters tell the story and end with “but I could only do (insert low number here) (insert food here.)”

Then, if I qualified, would they actually let me in?

The slots filled up remarkably fast this year, even with the three-qualifier limit. Even the Minnesota one, which doesn’t have the advantage of a close location to the east coast eaters, filled up in no time. This is the Super Bowl of the IFOCE. Even with no prize money, it’s a goal of any serious eater to get to Coney Island. And with the line-up developing this year, it’ll be an event not to be missed.

oh, believe me, I tried to get a spot, but was shut out.
understandably so, since I have yet to prove myself….. this will be my summer.
I was just looking for a back door.
or a loop-hole, if you will.

Hey Joey, I think “Wonder” brand hot dog buns approximates the size & consistancy of the ones they use at Nathan’s.

What about hot dogs? What is a good substitute if a person can’t get a hold of some Nathan’s?

I know you can buy the actual game-day dogs on the Nathan’s web site (www.nathansfamous.com). That’s the best way to test them… get the real thing.

Don Moses… are those buns used in all qualifiers? Or just the east coast ones? Do they now export the Nathan’s brand buns to the contests around the country?

THIS is DON LERMAN i’m almost sure that they don’t bake them themselves , they have a baker( BREAD CO). make them and put on thier label on .I ALWAYS USE sunbeam or by the markdown rolls because i’m going to dunk them anyway

    Joker,

there is no substitute for a Nathans regular hotdogs don’t snap Nathans do. If you practice with say Oscar Myer the Nathans Dogs are as different as night and day.

I definitely agree with Bubba. There is nothing I found in the hot dog realm to mimic the skin on the Nathan’s dogs. I think maybe a brat would come close since they have casings.

Actually, if you go with brats, eating the Nathans dogs should be a breeze in the contest. In fact, train with spicey brats or smoked sausage to get you used to the spices.
