2009 Spring Roll Eating Contest Qualifer #3, Pink Pearl Chinese Restaurant, Vancouver, BC
    Sunday, June 21, 2009, 1:30 p.m.

I ate 10 large spring rolls in less than 2 minutes to win. Second place winner Daniel Weidner ate 9 spring rolls in 3 minutes regulation time. The spring rolls that I bought for take out on Sunday June 14 when I submitted my entry form were easy to swallow since they were small, greasy and not flakey.
The qualifier spring rolls were large, dry and flakey. Before the seeing the double sized qualifier spring rolls I was aiming to eat 30 of the small ones. The restaurant provided one small glass of water and a bottle of Pearl River Zhu Jiang beer. I quickly used the water and lost time pouring the beer into the water glass. I finished the 10 spring rolls (each contestant got 10 to start) and expected a second plate. When none came I lifted up my plate and licked it. The top 2 finishers got a six pack of the sponsored beer and a spot at the final on Sunday, August 30, 2009, 2 p.m. to win $300. Nothing else for the other 8 male contestants. I asked the Master Of Ceremonies/co-owner why there was no second plate. He said he did not expect anyone to eat more than 10. I did not tell him that a small glass of water was not enough. Going by my pace I probably would eaten 15 to 20 of the large spring rolls (with enough water) in 3 minutes.

Draft rules at http://www.zhujiangbeer.ca/pdf/Contest_Rules.pdf indicated a $500 first prize.
The current registration form is at

    Qualifer # 4 is on July 19, 2009.
    Qualifer # 5 is on August 16, 2009.
