The bike race is awesome. It’s the best professional race held in the US. Riders come over from Europe to compete. It’s a 16 mile loop or so through the city and outskirts. In the end the riders cover about 160 miles.
The entire city comes out to watch and cheer the riders on. I typically hunker down on the Manayunk Wall which is a SEVENTEEN PERCENT grade hill with my wife, sons and friends and watch the riders trudge by as they are suffering the most. We crack beers and ring cowbells (more cowbell!) The Wall is overstuffed with drunken revelers (seems to be a theme in this town) and half the entertainment is watching them.
If you are fan of cycling or a drunken reveler yourself, than this event is a must-see. The first American accross the line is designated the US Champion.
I’m proud to say that I was there in 1993 when Lance Arstrong won the race and a Million Dollars (He was riding for Motorolla at the time, pre-cancer when he was a Day racer and not a Stage Racer) Later on that year he went on to win the World Championships and I also think it was the first time he won a stage in LeTour (he wasnt able to finish though)
So beyond all those details, just know that it’s a very big race and involves even more people than WingBowl and can be just as fun to watch! The judging however is better.
🙂

i agree with steakbellie on this one, i have there one time being an avid biker myself, and yes cracking beers there helps to watch the bikers. that hill is unreal, i am not sure i can even walk down the hill without falling over (post beer walk)

I have never been there and could not imagine the judging being any worse then what we get at the Wing Bowl. I think in the Wing Bowl, the judges get drunk.
What we need is more Cowbell!
