Controversy well I bet it involved Bob Shout complaining probably that either that sonya did not have something deducted so that he could sneak in for a victory or because of something like him claiming he ate more that what he was given credit for and if you go to his web site and read between the lines you can see what a jerk he is.

I was informed that George Shea does not and will not condone any type of home training . He made it clear to all of the participants in the Philly contest. I believe that includes water training as well. From what i understand he was dead serious regarding this matter. Just wanted to make everyone aware of that. That is all i have to say.

Another qualifer with a lot of excellent totals. I feel so inferior at hot dogs 🙂

Great job Wing Kong. You’re quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with.

This is going to be interesting to see who ends up with the wildcard.

I was honored to eat alongside Sonya for this contest. I dont think the are any issues with her numbers and she was as graceful as ever. Bob was on her other side and I did not see him eat (i was busy!)

The main controversy involved Humble Bob’s plate count. He had enough empty plates in front of him to have beaten Sonya. A Nathans official decided that he must have been given a double plate, but I dont know what evidence he had for that to be the issue as he seemed to decide that at the end.

I saw the plates at the end and Bob has a legitamate complaint here, and I think the considerable video coverage may help decide one way or the other. Once again this was an issue between the official and Bob and didnt involve Sonyas performance.

Either way there needs to be better Accounting of plates and numbers at these events. The remaining eaters were only asked for their numbers without showing any plates. MLE only recorded the top 4, Wild Bill attempted to get all 15 eaters…thanks Bill.

I knew it. Humble my ass! Let only those two eat again and Sonya will kick his ass again. That will end that controversy.

When its that close its easy for the judges to keep track of where eaters are in relation to one another count wise and to just pop up at the end with an extra plate that was doubled up with another one and say look at me i won is low. Now I am begining to think that Bobs count of 65 at krystals included an extra plate and i agree wityh steak belly that the IFOCE does need to do better on plate counting because some eaters like humble bob have been given credit for an extra plate or two.

What about using colored plates and mixing up the colors to only count plates when different colors appear? Im trying to help.

lets see if the ifoce can get this thing right for once. they kick out pat for puking – actions unbecoming of an eater. nothing specifying anything about what he did. the ifoce just acted. joey has said openly in just about any press that he trains with hot dogs or water or other foods. the ifoce has in print said they dont like training of any kind. pat gets kicked for breaking an unwritten moral decision. joey continually goes against the written stance on training. i wonder if they will do anything to him. what a joke.

  11. liz said

    May 26, 2007 @ 6:26 pm

Subich is 26th as of now.

Ugh, it sucks that there has to be controversy around something as seemingly simple as a plate count. That’s not debatable, like extra debris or chimpunking or dunking too long, that’s just basic counting. I really hope someone taped the whole thing, because it should be obvious whether Bob won by a whole extra plate.

Anyway, congrats to all for putting up big numbers AGAIN! I think this wildcard race will be a tight one.

Bob is always complaining. Counters don’t screw things up. They’re counting the entire way. it’s impossible to mess up a hot dog count. Plates of five. You don’t blink and miss 5 hot dogs. you don’t blink and miss 10 hot dogs. You don’t blink and miss 20 hot dogs. And if you miss 1 hot dog, you look at the plate and od the math. Bob is whining for no good reasons. how many times will he do this before someone calls him for what he is. This is tupid.

Listing of all 11 competitors (as I have them written down, just reporting what I was told):

1.) Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, 36
    2.) Humble Bob Shoudt, 33
    3.) “Big” Brian Subich, 27
4.) Micah “Wing Kong” Collins, 23.5
    5.) Eric “Steakbellie” Livingston, 17.25
6.) William “Wild Bill” Myers, 16.5
7.) Pete “Philly Guy” Miernicki, 13.75
8.) Paul “Buffet Buster” Sakelarides, 12
    9.) Mike Isco, 10 (tie)
    9.) Sean Verma, 10 (tie)
    11.) Adam Dewalt, 9

I’m sorry if I got anybody’s name incorrect, please submit a comment and correct it so OJ can put it into the database correctly. Congratulations to Wing Kong for breaking the deuce barrier for the first time – I’ll have to try again in Cranbury. Oh, and since I missed it last weekend, congrats to Russ Keeler and Tim Brown for also breaking the deuce barrier.

My wife and friends in the crowd said that the guy who was supposed to be doing Bob’s counter had to also fetch HotDogs for the Eaters at the table because they were understaffed. Sonyas counter stayed put.

I just think it’s a shame because Bob did nothing wrong, and either got shafted by the counter (not Bobs fault) or given an extra plate (not Bob’s fault). The fact that the plate and Dog count dont jibe is unfair to both Bob and Sonya, as she cant enjoy an undisputed victory.

Here are bobs own precontest words from his web site:

“Last year I was in three Nathan’s events. I did 28, then 29, then 30. So I guess this year I am going to go for 31 as that is the pace that I am on. We shall see on Saturday.”

So now we expect him to just jump up and do 39 assuming credit for an extra plate of five and of course he did not practice because thats against the rules.

Bob was two for two in controversial rulings against sonya in the past in which he was able to fight off the temptation to ignor the ruling in his favor and these were buffalo wings from 2005 or 2006 and meatballs in 2006. Now that there is a fair and just count the unholy one wants to pitch a fit. Hes a kid who wants his way and like i said it is impossible to screw up a count when eaters are fairly close relative to one another througout the contest. I think innocent bob had this shit planned from the start and sticky plates were welcomed by him because they fit into his plan.

I, as well as the rest of the people on this site are on to your pathetic game. So where are these contest videos? Will there be an official (or un-official) review? Will that review result and a change of ruling? Will Luther find a way to leave an anti-Sonya and pro-Sonya comments in the SAME COMMENT? These are questions that need to be answered!!!!

When those at center table eat counting for them is very unlikely to be erroneous. Counters, the MC, and the eaters themselves accurately guage who’s ahead / behind and by how much. That’s how eaters pace themselves. If you dont believe that plates can stick together just attend an event yourself.

I, & I believe other eaters, find it difficult to count & eat well at the same time. I seldom try anymore. For me, its like Krazy Kevin has described. ‘i’m aware of the 1st half & of the last minute, but I get lost in between’.

The difference between 22, 27 & 45 is ridiculous though. I can’t believe someone doesn’t know if they did in the upper 20’s or in the mid 40’s. There’s something very strange there.

Side note: it would have been a tad bit funnier if a dot com was added to the menchettigotsmoked comment. I absolutely did!

Ny friends and I went to this contest. I voted in the poll on MLE that Bob would beat Sonya. The contest was crazy. Very exciting. My friends, myself and those around us all thought Bob won. We watched Bob outeat Sonya. He was already eating another while Sonya was still on her last one. How many Bob won by we had different counts. they ranged from 2 to 5 more than Sonya. We were shocked when the results were announced. IMHO Bob got robbed. We who were there know Bob beat Sonya.

My favorite eater is Yellowcake and between Sonya and Bob I didn’t care who won, even though I like both of them. I was at the contest too and though I was not in the very front I could see and hear well enough to know that Bob and Sonya were pretty much neck and neck the through the first half but Bob slowed much more than Sonya in the last several minutes. George Shea even commented about Bob being in trouble. Sonya was never in trouble.

Anyway it is all academic because both will make it to Coney Island and I think the controversy will die there because we will see for sure who will eat the most HDBs. It would be nice to see both of them eat over 40 if that’s possible. Yellowcake will win a qualifier and he will be there too. I’m pulling for you Brian!

Correction for “Anonymous” — That was two years ago I lost in Philly by 1/2 dog to Pat Philbin (I finished ahead of Bob Shoudt and Brian Subich that year, before they both got so good! I stayed in a hotel with Subich who told me nothing wakes him up, so I opened the window he was sleeping under and the outside temp went down to about 50 degrees — he woke up freezing his a– off.). Last year I lost by 1/2 dog to Seaver Miller at QVC (which is basically Philly), although he beat me fair and square. I’ll probably try Philly again this year because I’m a glutton for punishment. Everyone else has improved so much, it’s almost crazy to try, but I keep getting the itch every spring.

  43. carey poehlmann said

    May 28, 2007 @ 7:19 pm

I would have to back up Philly Guy’s story. He can’t afford to eat on his own, and the way he looks, he must be doing 150 HDBs in competitions to maintain that physique. And I didn’t hear Shea say anything about Pete slowing down at all. He probably wouldn’t have eaten the plates had he known that was how they were counting his total.
Anonymous #12, yeah, you are right. Bob will qualify somewhere else, so we don’t need to really get too far into it. Lesson learned, don’t make the same mistake again. If the IFOCE is so understaffed, get volunteers, like standbys that don’t get into the competition.
