Sonya to limit contests allowing dunking

Sonya Thomas has updated her “A Peek Inside the Web” column which announces she will cut back on competing in contests allowing dunking like Nathan’s and the Krystal Square Off:

Does this mean that I will never compete in another contest where dunking is allowed? No, as everything has an exception once in awhile. But it does mean that I will participate in far fewer events where dunking is permitted. I can only praise those few in the world who have mastered that technique and put up astronomical numbers (i.e. 60+ Nathan’s Hot Dogs and Buns, 95+ Krystal Burgers, etc.)

My fans need not worry, however. The vast majority of foods are still wide open for me in competition — lobster, shrimp, clams, oysters, pasta, beans, soup, turkey, ham, ribs, meatballs, peppers, chicken wings, sushi, and rice, along with various fruits, vegetables, many sweets, and sometimes pizza. (I could go on.)

Kobayashi moves to Tokyo

Kobayashi’s most recent blog entry reports that he has moved from Nagoya to Tokyo. He considered moving from Nagoya earlier:

About three years ago, I started planning to move to the USA for a while, but my mother was found to be ill, and the plan was postponed. The purpose of going to America was actually not related to competing over there. It was a totally separate goal, so in fact still being active in my career was not essential, but naturally if I was going to go to over there, I always thought it might as well be sooner rather than later.

Kobayashi says he hopes to seek out new possibilities in Tokyo. It will be interesting to see if those possibilities include returning to Japanese competitive eating for the first time since the demise of “Food Battle Club” in 2002.
