No MLE programs on Spike TV’s pre-Christmas schedule

The online schedule for Spike TV now extends to December 26 and the third installment of the trilogy recorded in Las Vegas which features ham and hard boiled eggs eating contests does not appear on it.

Spike’s programming for Christmas and Christmas Eve consists solely of James Bond movies and reruns of “Star Trek: Voyager” and “CSI”.

update BestOnCable reports that the ham & eggs contest will be televised on December 12, but other schedules do not corroborate this.

Mystery women of competitive eating

The claim that a 90 pound woman was the only person to ever finish the Niner Diner’s challenge of a three pound burger with five pounds of fries adds another entry in the list of unnamed women who have reportedly done well in restaurants’ eating challenges which also includes:

The first person to finish the 9 pound Barrick Burger at the Plaza Casino in Las Vegas.

A yelp expedition to Spike’s Junkyard Dogs in Boston took a picture of the wall of fame in that establishment. A closeup of the “top dogs”, both females, on that wall follows after the jump. The hot dogs at Spike’s are reportedly larger than a typical hot dog.

Washington Post on Japanese blogging

The Washington Post has an interesting article on the rise of Japanese blogging. The article reports that more blog entries are written in Japanese than in English, even though there are about 8 times more Anglophones than Japanese speakers. Japanese blog entries are more likely to be based on everyday life than on the opinions or expertise of the writer.

Kana Kanisawa’s blog
, which consists of over 8600 entries which are phonecam pictures with brief captions, exemplifies this characteristic.

blog.cleveland.com on Kobayashis

The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s blog has an entry about relief pitcher Masahide “Masa” Kobayashi and his more famous namesake:

In case you’re wondering: No, The Tsunami and Masa are not related. But Masa was amused when Plain Dealer sports guy Dennis Manoloff put the question to him through an interpreter.

Kobayashi is the eighth-most-popular surname in Japan, the equivalent of O’Connor in Ireland, Zhou in China, Becker in Germany, Ramirez in Mexico, Popov in Russia, Svensson in Sweden, Macdonald in Scotland and (sorpresa, y’all) Rodriguez in the United States.

Dozens of notable people, one Japanese city and one “Star Trek” spaceship all bear the name that translates as “small forest,” including haiku master Issa Kobayashi (1763-1828).

Competitive eating paper in medical journal

David Metz, who examined Tim “Eater X” Janus on “The Science of Speed Eating”, has published a paper with three other researchers called “Competitive Speed Eating: Truth and Consequences” in the American Journal of Roentgenology. Access to the paper requires payment of $10, but an abstract is available which concludes:

Our observations suggest that successful speed eaters expand the stomach to form an enormous flaccid sac capable of accommodating huge amounts of food. We speculate that professional speed eaters eventually may develop morbid obesity, profound gastroparesis, intractable nausea and vomiting, and even the need for a gastrectomy. Despite its growing popularity, competitive speed eating is a potentially self-destructive form of behavior.

ABC 23 article about Niner Diner challenge

The following paragraph is currently at the bottom of ABC 23’s list of local news stories. I have quoted it since it will probably scroll off soon:

Tiny’s Challenge
Dec 01, 2007

The holidays are times when many of us – whether intentionally or not – overeat. But today one group is stuffing their stomachs to the max – all in the name of competitive eating. Niner’s diner in Nanty Glo serving up five helpings of Tiny’s Challenge this afternoon. It’s three pounds of ground beef – a pound of cheese – and a pound of toppings – complimented by five pounds of fries. Five eaters from across the state – one even as far as Brooklyn -taking on the challenge today. In the five-year history of Tiny’s Challenge only one person has been able to put down all ten pounds of food. For today’s eaters the challenge ranks up there with some of the best in the state.

Troubles at the Tropicana casino

A meatball eating contest was held at the Tropicana casino in Atlantic City the previous three Decembers. An article in nj.com reports on some of the issues facing that establishment which might have resulted in the contest not being renewed in 2007:

In a rare move, the state’s top casino prosecutor yesterday asked the Casino Control Commission to renew Tropicana’s license for one year — instead of the typical five — and impose seven-pages of restrictions to a gambling parlor that has grabbed headlines for its massive layoffs and patron complaints of vermin, unsanitary conditions and lousy service.

The casino was sold to a new owner, William Yung, early this year and has experienced a 10% drop in revenue.
