If a women’s wild card is awarded, here is the current leader board for that:

9 Dee “Princess Pi-Anna” Martin Newnan, GA

Once again, why would there be a wildcard? Ten is not a threshold for entrance into the finals. Do you people listen?

This isn’t meant to be a downer reply just an observation but there are 6 qualifiers down with 7 to go (4 this week alone) and so far for the womens division we have had only 3 qualify with over 10HDB’s J. Lee yet to but we know she will in one of the remaining qualifiers.

Other then J. Lee, MAYBE Cardboard Shell in Tempe and with Stephani Torres up in the air (did she sign, will she compete on the 4th???) we might just have a 3-5 woman contest in Coney… To date, the womens contest isn’t looking to be as promising as we hoped it was going to be, sadly… Nathan’s is still offering $20k for the womens contest, same as the mens right, and I’m looking at least 5 guys so far with over 20HDB’s who will be watching the contest from home…

If one of the sub 10 ladies choses to go to Nathan’s and pay for their trip then there would be more at the table.

” This year, however, the top finishing female competitor from each qualifier will win a chance to compete at the finals in Coney Island.”

The Shredder and his rock solid guns will surge past Bob Shoudt and claim the wildcard in Fishkill

A wildcard with 9 what a joke? Im getting a sex change operation before years end . This way im guaranteed a spot in the womans division next year. If Renee Richards can do it i can do it

I have a strange feeling that Stephanie was thrown out of the contest . No specifics but that appears to be the case

Thus far it seems to me that the low numbers coming in for female eaters underscore how great past and present women eaters like Sonya, Carlene, and Juliet are/were. They put up such lofty numbers for so long that most people took it for granted that their talents were reflective of what most women with CE talent SHOULD be expected to do—-wrong! They were, and always have been, not just the exceptions to the norm, but the most elite exceptions.

Sure, a dozen or more men are eating over 20 HDBs in the qualifiers. Many aren’t making it to the finals. This is as it should be. Men versus men; women versus women. Intergender comparisons are like comparing apples and oranges.

Again, men have an advantage over women in virtually every sport and pseudosport that involves physical activity. Men are larger, stronger, have larger muscles, and can endure more physically than women. (Name a single physical activity in which this is not true!)

Do I think that women who eat less than 10 should make it in? No! Do I think men who can do twice that should be allowed to compete if they don’t otherwise qualify? No!

For any woman just to be able to hold her own against the guys is much more than remarkable, it is phenomenal.

Perhaps the initiation of a female division at Nathan’s, for which qualifier results don’t live up to what we’ve taken for granted, can drive this point home.

If the men that eat 20 hdb and dont get into the finals but still want to prove that they are good sports , will cheer and clap for the females as they grace the stage in Coney Island. I think that is the most prudent and respectful way of handling things. Jealousy will get you nowhere in life

Rhonda, one “physical activity” in which women endure more than a man is childbirth. now not that I’m a proponent of mle ( I’m not) but give the girls some time, maybe after a few see that this is a chance for their 15 min more will get on the band wagon.

I knew someone would say childbirth—-hardly a sport or pseudosport, but the way the world is going it may be that way for some in another decade.

Just to set the record straight, LeFevre did 21 at the Las Vegas qualifier and Fowler did 19. LeFevre has never done under 20 and this was the first time he has been under 25 since 2003. He was not expecting to be in the contest and certainly wasn’t prepared to put up a big number. Check the IFOCE article for verification.

Once again, my reply wasn’t meant to be malicious or jealousy towards women in anyway, I was merely stating that to date, it hasn’t brought out any new extrodinary female talent that wasn’t already there before… I’m all for the Nathan’s Championship succeeding but now without Koby in the mix and as long as Joey is around, it’s just not as appealing as it was. As a fan I can admit that and others who just watch the contest on ESPN every year casually have said that as well.

J.Joe may have a point, after this first year and once it’s televised other women will be aware of the contest and thus show up for qualifiers.

Thanks for the info, A – 3:31 PM. I think this is the article you are referring to:

    http://ifoce.com/contests.php?action=detail&eventID=422

However, it really is a moot point, as neither Rich nor Travis should be eligible for wild card consideration due to their participation in the unsanctioned hot dog contest in Vegas a month later:

Non sanctioned IFOCE contest or not, Nathan’s would have to open up another 5-10 wild card slots in order for Rich or the Fowler guy to to be considered in the running to make the final table.

I have not posted here in well over a year as I see little reason to reply to negative, mean spirited comments from people who don’t have the guts to use their real names. The main reason I retired from the IFOCE was that I knew I wasn’t going to get any better and that so many superior young eaters were coming along who could easily handle me in a 10 minute Nathan’s contest. I did this year’s qualifier because George asked me if I wanted to be in it and I decided at the last minute to do it for fun, knowing full well that I would not win. There were a lot of people who wanted me to do it (I had fully intended to watch and told George I didn’t want to take anyone elses place); so I gave it the old college try and did a miserable 21 (my lowest total by far since 2003). Even if I had not eaten a full breakfast earlier I probably couldn’t have beaten Adrian Morgan or Flash Gordon because they are much faster eaters than I am (or have even been). I wasn’t trying to qualify for Coney (I had done it eight years in a row and knew when they reduced the contest to ten minutes instead of 12 that my days of qualifying were over. Even though I did over 30 on six occasions, only one of those came in a ten minute contest (and that was my best day ever with the hot dogs I have always struggled with).

I entered the Ellis Island Casino contest because the hot dogs were skinless and the contest for second place would be for 15 minutes instead of 10. I thought I could put up a real big number with the extra time, but we were limited to only one glass of water for every 10 hot dogs (with chili and onions). The first 10 for every competitor were wrapped so no air could harden the buns, but the subsequent trays were not and the buns got hard by the third tray and I ran out of water before I could finish the last dog and move on to the next tray and another badly needed glass of water. I was disappointed but still had a great time competing with Johnny and Goose. That’s all competitive eating ever was to me: fun!

    Rich,

I hope you didn’t take my reply as mean spirited, I’ve met you and your wife a few times, and you have always been a total class act, sometimes all of us lose focus on the true spirit of the sport and that’s to have fun, thanks for reminding us! I’d love to see you and your lovely wife Carlene make the trip to Tempe or Hawthorne so she can compete as well for old time sake.

I couldn’t agree more with nunonabun2. When you and Carlene walked through the door to the 3rd qualifier for that chili dog contest I knew that this contest now consisted of a little extra class and a whole lot more competition. The contest was in the evening as well which is my 2nd outdoor at night contest which seems to add to the fun with a carnival atmosphere and the smell of food trucks. I didn’t get all that far into my 2nd plate so i cannot verify the bun conditions.

I can never remember Rich talking smack. He and Carlene always did their talking at the CE table. They will, in my book, forever be the First Couple of competitive eating.

Now they’re two true legends of the sport.

I really really miss you Rich and Carlene. Though I did not attend Nathan’s for the last two or three years, I remember fondly the times when you two were there, reading about you, seeing you compete. The last time I saw Rich, unfortunately you, Carlene, were unable to come to New York. You were, are, and always will be the Emperor and Empress of Competitive Eating, or King and Queen or The Royal Couple. You probably will not like any of these designations, you are both modest, but they are all meant to convey the highest possible praise for you two as people and as eaters. Missed but never ever forgotten, Be Well.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I’ll always have fond memories of all of the people I have met along the competitive eating circuit and wish I could have had the pleasure of meeting all of you who post on this site. I really miss you too, Rona, as you are a bundle of joy and knowledge. Rhonda, I would love to meet you someday as you have always been supportive of us and really know a whole lot about competitive eating. You’re very articulate and your views always make for interesting reading. Keep on truckin, Pat – you are still doing as well as ever and have a long way to go. I always enjoy meeting new people and that goes for Cutter, Johnny, Goose and all of the other contestants who entered the Ellis Island Casino contest. I wish you all the very best and hope that you eaters have as much fun competing as I have had (regardless of where you place).
