Rick "The Manager" Russo emailed that professionals will be allowed to compete in the 2011 Wing Bowl and that qualification stunt ideas are being accepted. Takeru Kobayashi has not announced if he will compete.

    anything can happen in wings. ever have this happen to you…. you are stripping and eating wings at a nice pace when all of the sudden one of the wing bones on the non drumstick portion actually comes off with the meat. for anyone to make any predictions about who is going to win is foolish. even if the contest is fair nobody can say with even 30% confidence who is going to win. there have been repeat winners yes.

    what is this set up stuff? do you mean to tell me that this contest is rigged? how do you rig wings? give one person smaller wings so he/she wins? or do they just miscount the wings.

    kobayashi said he never had wings before, if this is the case i don’t like his chances. maybe his translator never had wings before. how does somebody go to a university in the united states and not learn english? am i wrong? didn’t i see an old clip of kobayashi in his college years eating 30 in and out burger patties? hmmmmm. i know i have no authority, weight or whathaveu here whatsoever, but something is fishy.

    Jon Squibb is excellent—-the best wing eater outside of MLE. In a fairly judged contest, however, he doesn’t stand much of a chance to top Joey.

    Nonetheless, given the subjectively applied rules at WB, he has a 50-50 chance to win the crown.

    a few facts: Wing Bowl accounting is horrible. Squibb is a fine wing eater and could be ranked in the teens maybe if he was in the MLE. Joey and Bertoletti eat significantly faster than Squibb. I’m not attacking anything away from Squibb, you just have no idea how fast and long Joey & Pat can do in wings. Nortorious BOB could also beat him. I’ve seen all of these folks eat wings in person multiple times. Also Koby has eaten wings, I’ve seen that too. It’s just a better story if he says he hasnt.

    I don’t think WB is “rigged,” as far as the winner being predetermined. I do believe, however, that judges’ interpretations of a “clean” wing vary widely. I don’t think the judges are dishonest either. There’s just too much room for interpretation/opinion/leniency.

    I feel the same way about corn on the cob. What does a clean ear of corn look like, and according to whom?

    I would say it mostly not rigged. Almost all of the issues have to do with sloppy accounting, varying standards between judges and the fact that they really dont care about getting it right, as long as a dynamic show comes out of it. I think on a few occasions they have swayed the results. WB 13 anyone? No one that saw that with their eyes could argue who the real winner was. They also hobbled Joey and Pat’s Scores in the first round 3 years ago.

    HB cleared 5 perfect plates for over 100 wings in the first round in WB 15, yet he has never made the second round. I was standing next to him and just couldnt believe it. Thats when I realized how bad it was.

    That’s sad Steak. It’s such a shame that as widely covered and as popular as WB is, the accounting is not better.

    Like you alluded to, the central goal for the organizers is showmanship and pageantry. I have to agree with movie star Paul Barlow, that Koby would probably eat that up (no pun intended). But I would be deeply saddened for him to attend and lose, unless someone honestly ate more meat off the bone than he did.

    I was near HB also, in 15 and he was a beast…complete BS he didn’t make the final table. To be treated that poorly as a local sucks that much more. Take WB with a grain of salt, a spectacle and not a fair eating contest.

    Dont get me wrong. It’s a spectacle, but one of the greatest spectacles of all time. It’s the second most fun I’ve had with a Kilt on. If you have a chance to compete or just attend, you should. Just make sure you use your eyes to see how much everyone ate (and to look at the boobies!)

    Give me a break. Saying she’s an animal does not equate to saying she can’t be beaten. Weighing wings sucks too. Scales are unreliable, and people suck at math. Some foods just don’t lend themselves to good contests, debris foods especially.

    I don’t know anybody on here, but my comments are sometimes deleted. On two occasions in the past i emailed ojrifkin. once to add a contest that was in nevada and once to inquire what i was doing wrong to get a comment deleted. maybe my comment was a threat towards the entire the wing eating community, i don’t know.

    I see there are people on here that constantly pester each other, i have to learn about Seiken and Pat, and of course who scoops what story between Seiken and Oj. And see all these anonymous attacks, i mean things any innocent bystander could give a crap about. But i put up a strategy on how to practice eating wings and the next day it is gone. I am kind of glad, i was in a very generous state of mind then and now that i think about it, why would i want to help anybody eat wings faster.

    Anony 1:48: Sonya hasn’t been beaten for consectutive years in the one sanctioned wing competition when the wings are weighed. If she won won one year you might claim that people suck at math and the scales are unreliable. But consistently winning for years in a row is a little hard to swallow. And, her competition hasn’t exactly been push overs unless you think Pat and Joey aren’t that good. I’m not speculating because that’s just empiric facts. That doesn’t mean that she can’t be beaten. She has been beaten in the past, and someday, maybe even next year, Pat, Joey or somebody else may beat her. But right now, as evidenced by the latest most reliable data no one has beaten her, so she’s the best. If you think you or someone else can beat Sonya, go ahead and book a flight for Buffalo next year. But, if I were you I’d skip the wing contest and book a tour of Niagara Falls. Because unless your Joey or Pat, I wouldn’t give you or your friend very good odds in beating her when it comes to wings.

    I guess Jarvis is going to remain retired. I have no idea how sonya wins these wing contests, she is an absolute mess. kind of like a pirhana. attacking the wing from the outside in and very steadily. I mean a mess in a very respectful way. She just gets it done, but it looks difficult for her. But looks are decieving, Joey also looks like he struggles but the brute force method simply works for them. I expect Joey and Sonya to be up there of course. That doesn’t mean that many of the numerous non mle eaters will also be there too. I would like to see Ed Cookie Jarvis take on these kids.

    good point about debris foods, is there any more of a debris food than chicken wings? maybe ribs or corn on the cob. i guess that is why they have spotters and check the remains post contest.

    People might be wondering why i am so infactuated with wings, i just am. when i was 10 years old my grandfather had me convinced they were from the side of a buffalo. i eat wings no less than 3 times a week. It has to do with the era and environment in which i grew up, it is the ultimate comfort food. I have never actually participated in any sort of wing event. the sublte nuances of how big they are or how much they are cooked or the quality fo the wing or the quality of the sauce is of utmost priority to me when eating wings.

It’s notorious for many glitches, inconsistencies, and generally unequal opportunities.Why do so few people go there? Because everyone’s seen how poorly it’s run. Why was Joey there this year? Because he had a paying gig in Buffalo. Why did Bertoletti leave town before the wing event? Because he knows it sucks. Why didn’t Bob or Eater X go? Because they’ve seen how poorly it’s run. Which wing-eating contest did Chip Simpson hate the most? Buffalo. The only person who likes Buffalo is Sonya because she catches a break up there.     Bertoletti left early because he came in third last year when Joey wasn’t even there. He showed common sense leaving early in 2010. Sonya has won WB once, a Verizon VW qualifier, and Buffalo Wings 5 times. Seven Wing wins speaks for itself.

Verizon and Trip Rewards? How many years did you have to go back to pull those out of your ass? I mean is Trip Rewards still in business?     i have a theory about wing bowl. eating wings somewhat equalizes the abilities of the giants out there whom have a tremendous record in ce. so instead of accepting this the alternative is to claim wing contests to be complete farces. not to take anything away from the great competitive eaters. some people are good at wings. granted many of the best eaters are profficient enough to excel at wings.

    Beauty Contest, you don’t understand how the business works. He was there for the demonstration, not for the contest. Pepto couldn’t have cared less how he was to against Sonya. Also, do the math: if the only weighed wing contest Sonya wins is in Buffalo, and if she loses the other ones (ALWAYS to Joey, Pat and Chip in Verizon and Trip Rewards) then really Buffalo is the outlier, and the other two are the better gauges.

    Wings are not that much about capacity or speed, it’s mostly about the technique of taking the meat off from them. If you lose one second or two swallowing, it doesn’t matter, by the time the average joe is forced to down everything in his mouth any pro might have lost half a second taking the meat off from each wing. That levels the field a lot, and while it does requires some competitive eating skills to catch pros up, it’s not the most challenging thing one has to face in a wing eating contest.

    Weighting the meat eaten won’t make a wing eating contest more fair. One could eat more meat at the cost of building more debris (i.e. Not cleaning the wing) or, though very unlikely, one could receive smaller or bigger wings which take the same time to clean up, but one sums up more meat to one of the competitors’ totals. This last case wouldn’t probably make a difference in a short contest, but in WB it could probably do.

    Gastro: Good points. But, the problem is at WB if the judge thinks you didn’t clean the bone, they throw the whole wing out and don’t count it. So while you may have taken the time to eat the wing, you get no credit for it. If you weigh bones and debris in the pan, you get credit for what you eat and that is the measure of an accurate eating contest. If WB weighed it would be much more fair, and you wouldn’t have to, as they do every year after year, to deal with people complaining that they were not treated fairly.

    Anonymous 1:27, I will recommend you to run the marketing campaign for the closest competitor of the next company I purchase stock in.

    Gastro, wings are often VERY MUCH about hand speed. If the wings are tough, finger strength and jaw strength begin to play a major role, however.

    Make the wings tough and Joey cruises because of the latter two factors. If the wings are tender, however, The Black Widow sets the standard. Her combination of nimble fingers and hand speed are unmatched—-witness oysters, clams, lobster, crawfish, and any other food requiring finger dexterity.

    Juliet is also better than most 90 % of the men in CE in such foods, for the same reasons.

Their product is about soothing an overeating stomach. They want to be associated big eaters. They want to cultivate the idea that pro eaters — the biggest eaters — turn to Pepto Bismol for relief.     And seriously, the last to win at something is the best? That’s an awfully black and white, small-minded view of the world, and it leaves zero room for flukes or luck or anything that complicates the pursuit of objective measures.

    I made a comment right after the contest. It would have been nice to see how Joey would have done. I think he would have won.

    Rhonda their lives are that shallow. They post for one reason and one reason only and that is to hate and poke fun at others that are in the limelight because they can never be in the limelight.All it takes is for one real name person to bitch about something and they converge on that person like a swarm of bees

    Rhonda just saying that after that contest it is obvious that your made up baloney about her with the nimblest fingers and quickest hands is just a way for you to make it seem like she is the best. Everyone who was there knows her fingers^hands did not move quick enough as she was caught that is why all the comments. But you already knew that as well.

    Accept it. She is a fantastic eater. She doesn’t have to win everything to be that. You don’t have to make up stuff that we all know is false to boost her image.

    Bottomline is that everyone knows Pat Berto has the fastest hands in comp. eat. Look at the tapes. What that even means I have no idea. Cant wait for you to come up with a fact like she is known to have the quickest optical food recognition. That she is able to use her superior intelligence to determine the proper angle to tear into the food. That she uses her height the best as she is closer to the food then her competitors so she can access it quicker.

    Sonya kicks butt but that doesnt mean you should have to clean your nose so often.

    I have to go now, I am off to the Bronsonian.

    I think the IFOCE should implement a rule that prohibits the members attending farce bowl even as a spectator. If you are true blue to the organization you have no biz being there just to hang out and throw your hard earned cash at a bunch of skeezy looking whores
