Pat Bertoletti wins Minnesota w/26 HDB
update #2 WCCO has video from the contest
update The top 3 from MLE via Crawfish
1 Pat Bertoletti 26
2 Mark Williams 13.5
3 Julie Dey 11
Julie Dey has the best female debut since Juliet Lee and is the 8th female with a 10+ HDB Nathan’s result according to the eatfeats database. The contest was her first according to a comment in a CityPages blog entry.
It is surprising Patrick Vandam did not compete.
George Shea reports that Pat Bertoletti won the Minnesota Nathan’s qualifier with 26 HDB. DeepDishEats confirms the total. Cold rain contributed to Bertoletti’s unexpectedly low amount.
In a startribune.com comment, someone claiming to have done 31 HDB says he will participate in the qualifier, which would probably be Patrick VanDam if accurate.

That is low for Pat. I expect he will come close to doubling that July 4

Just curious about why Pat’s number is so low. I understand rain can be inconvenient, but really, 26???
Realistically, 26 is a great number, but compares to Tim and others it seems like a really strange number.

For the first time in about a month it rained in Minneapolis.
And it was 48 degrees.
So it was a cold rain.
The hot dogs understandably were very cold. – jeez, there wasn’t even any of that hot dog grease on any of them.
And they were very leathery. Some were hard to even bite through.
The buns were hard – kinda like you might expect if you found some that had been in the back of your refrigerator for a coupe of weeks.
Indeed, conditions were way too hard for this 51 year old amateur.
This was Pat’s third trip to Minnesota and I saw him do 32 in a losing effort in 2006 and then 41 in 2008.
For some crazy reason my daughter got me signed up to compete this year. So my goal was to be within 1/3 of Pat’s total, which I figured would be between 14 and 16. I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed that I only ate 11.
But then they announced that Pat only did 26 – well that changed my perspective quite a bit. Hell, not all that many people can say that they finished within 15 hdb’s of the Mr. Bertoletti.
Afterwards he seemed pretty disappointed with his total (and not just because he failed to win the bottle of Maker’s Mark I promised him before the event if he broke the Minnesota record he set last year.). But who knows for sure.
And in any case, he was pretty much eating against himself.
By the way, the sponsors handed out trophies to the top 5 eaters. I can assure you all that my 4th place trophy is going to be displayed in a place of honor!

I’m not sure if this was Pat’s strategy, but he probably just ate a little more than he needed to in order to win. I don’t think weather was a factor in cutting his career best in HDBs (49) almost in half. Is weather ever really that much of a factor? I mean, aside from sub-zero temperatures, 110 degree summers or a torrential downpour — which might actually increase totals in dunking contests — it seems like you’ll come in right around where you’d come in under “normal” circumstances…give or take 10 percent maybe.
In either case, I agree. Pat and X are the only two eaters besides Joey and Koby with a real shot at winning at Coney. If latter two have an off day, it’s anyone’s game.
