MySanAntonio has a gallery of Saturday’s Krystal qualifier. You would not be able to tell dunking was banned by Erik Denmark’s shirt.

update The Krystal Square Off blog has a video and MySanAntonio has a short interview with Sonya Thomas, who will compete in 2 contests at the Buffalo Wing Festival this weekend.

    Sonya was there and she said Erik ate really good. PLEASE let’s not go down that whole debris controversy of last year. Look at Eric’s shirt, there is no debris it’s just water. People are going to spill. But Erik ate everyone of those 55 points and deserves credit for it. Erik did great and I expect him to do great at the finals as a qualifyer.

    Erik is and has always been one of the most honorable, clean eaters going. Sure, people are going to spill some water in a speed-eating contest. That’s the nature of the event. And Eric’s very tall, unlike Sonya. whose smaller stature enables her to be much closer to the food.

    I like the pics. Other than the funny looks on Erik’s and Sonya’s faces, they show that they’re eating real Krystal burgers, and not drinking Krystal soup from their cupped hands.

    The Krystal people have got to be pleased with the switch to nondunking.

    I agree with you about Erik great guy and clean eater. Yeah, good pics. As an anabashed Sonya fan however, I think I may have to question my opinion of Erik with that look on his face when Sonya’s holding up the trophy (just kidding Erik Sonya thinks yor’re great). I do think Sonya would like someone to burn that pic of her with her eyes rolled in the back of head eating (funny stuff).

    Once again, I think it’s going to be hard to beat Erik’s score for any of the potential wild cards out there.

    When it comes to the difficulty of eating without dunking — now after having competed Sonya confirms she likes the no dunking rule. It focuses the eater to concentrae on the food and swallowing fast rather than the hand exchange technique of dunking — eating — dunking — eating, etc. She agrees with Pat regarding the Angus — a bigger Quarter Pounder, a little chewier, and very tasty. So, my advice to the Northern eaters who can’t get a hold of Krystals and are into practicing, practice with White Castles and Quarter Pounders. She did say it was hot as heck out there, so keep your drink handy during the competition. In fact, I wouldn’t be suprised if some of that water on Erik was sweat rather water drippage. She also pointed out that there’s no room for slight of hand or droppage — the officiating is strict. The officials are right on top of you checking for any droppage or spit-back into the cups. Not a complaint — I’m sure all the eaters agree that fair and accurate officiating is a good thing.

    Yeah, the wetness on the shirt is clearly just spillage from repeated drinking during the contest. If anything, it’s proof that dunking really was banned because if you try to chase a mouthful of dry food with some water, some of it is going to spill out of your mouth and onto your shirt.

    I like that picture of Sonya with her trophy (#9). Her expression is great. #10 is cool too. Erik has that “second place” look on his face.

    Thanks for noticing the wet dribble on my shirt:) I don’t know why I get so wet in a no dunking contest, my reactions are generally instinctual and I didn’t even notice I was so wet until after the contest. The wetness is caused by spillage from my mouth being full while trying to drink – and the majority of it was caused in the first minute (I think) from my first few drinks when my mouth was intially dry. Sonya was really impressive on Saturday, she seemed invigorated by the new rules. Sonya was gracious enough to apologize to me after the contest for winning, she certainly deserved to win with her performance and by no means owed me an apology, and it was a very kind gesture that she considered me. Even though I wanted nothing but to win I too was smiling when I saw those photos of Sonya.

    San Antonio was 97 degrees with a 14 percent humidity. That is hot but not as what is forecast for Jacksonville the next week.

    San Antonio had their event on a shady and cooled off stage. Jacksonville will be on an open stage, next to the river. The forecast for calls for a high of 32 with humidity of 90 percent. That will be mixed in with a 70 percent chance of rain. A weather man I know says this will make the heat index leave a feel like temp at 110 to 115.

    Hot is hot and Jacksonville will be hot. Erik had wet his shirt by spilling his water. The eaters in Jacksonville will wet their shirts with all the sweat. Even the emcee will not wear a jacket that day.

    I am glad I am not going to Jacksonville to eat. Those eaters will need super human strength just to breath between bites.

    San Antonio may have been hot but Jacksonville will be stifling. So hot that if you cracked some eggs, on the sidewalk behind the stage, you could have fried eggs after the contest is over.

    Erik you did outstanding in your own right. Not only do I believe at least one qualifier winner’s total will be less than your 55 points, I am very confident that given your point total, you are practically a lock to be one of the two wild cards.

    I doubt the heat stress index (HSI) in J-ville will be higher than it was in SA. I’ve lived in both states —- in SA, as well as north and south Florida.

    With Hall living smack dab in K-country, where he is able to practice with the real deal, unlike eaters who don’t live in the south, he should be able to accumulate 60 + points, being the fine, improving Krystal eater he is.

    Anyway, you’ve certainly tried to create the drama for a less-than-expected total. I and other Hall Hunt fans appreciate the sentiment.
