AICE claims Mark Lyle’s taco result breaks Sonya’s record
From AICE News:
Mark Lyle does Wet Taco demonstration (dunking the Tacos) and shows the world why Picnic Style rules is hard. In doing so, Vacuum breaks Sonya Thomas’s WR of 2:14. It makes you wonder how many of the so-called IFOCE records are a sham?
Sonya Thomas lists her taco record as 48 in 11 minutes, and she still managed a pace (about 2:20 per 10 tacos) near Mark Lyle’s.

Where in the world did this record of 2:14 come from. When did sonya set this? Where? How many? The only record Sonya set that was less than 5 minutes was baked beans from what I can see. Apparently the aice now has an eater who has esttablished a 1 minute record for tacos. Only one thing. I didnt realize it was an aice sanctioned event.

These two records aren’t comparable for many different reasons. Seems rude to try to discredit Sonya’s efforts. She is an amazing eater who I’m sure Mark Lyle would admit that, no matter what rules were used, would beat him in a 8-12 minute contest easily. People can even keep up with kobayashi during the first minute or two; doesn’t mean they come anywhere close to his level as the contest progresses. . .sprinting is good, but endurance is neccessary to win. All this IFOCE hating from AICE folks is getting a little bit silly. . .it comes across as bitter or jealous, IMO. Whatever happened to courtesy and respect?

I think it’s pretty ignorant to compare a two minute effort with an eleven minute one. It was really a fine job by Mark, but for the people who run AICE to not take into account the speed drop off after the first 2 or 3 minutes shows they are just trying to be irresponsibly inflamatory, or have never actually eaten for more than 2 minutes. Hell, she may have downed over 20 in those first two minutes.
It’s really impossible to compare unless the same conditions are present, eveybody who’s eaten in more than one contest can see that.
I look forward to Marks Twinkie Video!!!

That fact that AICE prints that statement is desperate and pathetic. That statement is called LIBEL. Sonya does not have a two minute record for tacos, her record is 48 for 11 minutes and if you wanted to take her 2 minute average for that it would be 2:17.5 anyway not 2:14. Plus, Mark Lyle took 2:29 to swallow the tacos and considering the claim is whoever ate 10 the fastest, don’t you have to swallow the tacos for your time to count?

I agree with the short time period vs a prolonged time. She may or may not have had more down in less time. The whole purpose of it was to compare the difference between the two techniques. I don’t believe ANYONE at AICE is trying to be disrespectful towards Sonja. I for one am not. She deserves respect because she is a fantastic eater.
I would also like to clear up another matter, I was NOT the one who proclaimed it a record. That word was given to me from someone from another organization. No it wasn’t a sactioned event, so that means it probably won’t be regarded as an “official” record but maybe just a standard. I am not sitting around thumping my chest about it so don’t make attempts to have it sound that way.
good eats

quit barking at me…….it was an EXPERIMENT.
I was also told on the down low by someone who competed in the IFOCE taco event that they were slightly smaller and easier to get down than Taco Bells. Not to mention they probably tasted better.(I HATE TACO BELL except at 230 in the morning), then making them sloppy didn’t aide me in the way of consumption either.
Guess what? I HATE twinkies too, even at 230 in the morning. Maybe have eaten 10 in my entire life, so we will see how that goes if I even compete.

BTW the courtesy and respect thing hasn’t been shown to AICE 99.999999% percent of the time out on this site. Doesn’t feel very good does it? Pisses ya off doesn’t it? Me too.

The tacos in the IFOCE contest were a bit smaller than taco bell. He is correct on that . They were custom made for the event.

The actual taco contest in its entirety is on tour de gorge high def shows on INHD from 2004. Not sure if they give a taco by taco play by play on sonya in the first 2 minutes. I am sure many IFOCE members have copies of it on CD Or DVD

All PR posturing aside, this claim is absolute b.s.
A 2:14 sprint (with only 10 tacos to finish in total) isn’t just a different ball game than an 11-minute all-you-can-eat contest. It’s an entirely different sport. It would be like claiming a 50-yard-dash sprinter could keep up his speed for a 20-mile marathon (or even a 440 race, for that matter).
Steakbellie is absoutely correct. Longer contests often see higher numbers in the first couple minutes, and sometimes eaters have to pace themselves to get over the 8-minute wall.
If this logic were to be applied to the Krystal contest, for example, both Humble Bob and Joey should have eaten 208 burgers in the finals (their 52/2 min record x 4). Joey ate 93 and Bob ate 63. Both tremendous numbers, but also a tremendous illustration that you can’t just multiply numbers of short contests to get long ones.
K
PS – Mark, no venom directed at you at all. Congrats on your show, both wet and dry. Those are impressive numbers.

I agree with Kevin there is no comparison between the two contests what so ever. Marks run was good I’m not taking away from that but an 11 minute contest is a diffrent thing.
