Best Nathan’s pound-for-pound performances

Here are the top Nathan’s pound-for-pound performances in the finals since 2001 computed by dividing the amount eaten by the listed bodyweight of the competitor

1. 2002 Takeru Kobayashi 50.5 / 113 lb. = .447
2. 2004 Takeru Kobayashi 53.5 / 132 lb. = .405
3. 2001 Takeru Kobayashi 50 / 131 lb. = 382
4. 2005 Sonya Thomas 37 / 100 lb. = .370
5. 2005 Takeru Kobayashi 49 / 144 lb. = .340
6. 2004 Sonya Thomas 32 / 100 lb. = .320
7. 2001 Kazutoyo Arai 31 / 101 lb. = .30693
8. 2003 Takeru Kobayashi 44.5 / 145 lb. = .30690
9. 2005 Kenji Oguni 31 / 110 lb. = .282
10. 2003 Sonya Thomas 25 / 107 lb. = .234

CNN reports from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 were used to compute these ratios

It is possible that Kobayashi’s 2002 weight is inaccurate since it is 18 pounds less than any other weight and the 2003 CNN article says that his current weight of 145 pounds is 15 pounds more than his 2002 weight. NY1 has an article from the weigh-in which reports that Kobayashi’s weight is 113 pounds.

If Kobayashi’s 2002 weight is correct, and Sonya retains her weight of 100 pounds, eating 45 hot dogs in the 2006 finals will produce the all-time best pound-for-pound result. (41 hot dogs will give Sonya that accolade if the 2002 weight is not accurate)

I think a way more impressive finding is How Many Hotdogs a Person Can Eat vs. Their Shoe Size.

    Takeru wears a mens 11 – Best 2004 53.5 / 11 = 4.863
    Sonya wears a mens 8 – Best 2005 37 / 8 = 4.625
    Arai wears a mens 8 – Best 2001 31 / 8 = 3.875
    Oguni wears a mens 9 – Best 2005 31 / 9 = 3.444
    Chestnut wears a mens 10 – Best 2005 32 / 10 = 3.2

These are all from Nathan’s Finals. However the most impressive Nathan’s Eater of All Time is:

    Stu Birdy wears a mens size 3 (yes he really does) – Best 2003 Philadelphia Nathan’s Qualifier 16 1/2 = 5.5

Therefore Stu Birdy should be on the Nathan’s Wall of Fame!

Again, it may be just me, but I feel this is way more signoficant than hotdogs/pound of body weight.

Who cares about pound for pound crap? This is just a way to qualify losing. Obviously, the only number that matters is the number of hot dogs that can go down your throat and fit in your stomach in 12 minutes.

I could try to make a case for knowing Kobe, Sonya, or Chestnuts shoe size. I would probably fail, but I can try. Does Stu Birdy know his shoe size?!? Never mind anyone else. Can we all say it together… Foot Fetish!

Erik, I agree w/you on this, it might mean something in boxing, but not in eating. Then again, this is coming from a guy who peaked at about 375lbs & will never be anything less than a heavyweight.

This site is supposed to be about women in competitve eating. Even when overweight, women tend to weigh less than men so, that would be the main reason for this lb. fro lb. crap.

Where do you come up with this crap that Stu Birdy ate 16 1/2 hot dogs at anytime in his career. I have never seen him eat more than a plate and a half at best

I think that examining pound-for-pound eating performances does help put things in perspective, at least to some extent. Granted, the winning total is the winning total, regardless. But larger people are expected by the general public to be able to eat more, whether they do or not. So, while “weighting” the totals do not affect outcome, nor should it, it does help accentuate performances, especially winning ones.
