Bill Simmons (not El Wingador) on Joey Chestnut

In his chat today, Bill “The Sports Guy” Simmons of ESPN.com was asked a question about Joey Chestnut:

Eric (New York City): Bill, did you read about that guy who broke the Japanese guy’s record for hot dog eating. Will you be tuning in to ESPN2 to watch USA vs. Japan in hot dog eating?

Bill Simmons: Heard about this! We really need to get behind this guy… it’s like the ’80 Olympic Hockey team all over again.

Bill Simmons from ESPN? Oh yeah, I heard of this guy!
I like how they promote competitive eating on national sports shows, but they really show their ignorance when saying things like “heard of this guy” and “we really got to get behind this guy”
OK, so Joey isn’t the Nathans champ, but come on, it isn’t like he walked off the street and decided to give the whole hot dog thing a try.

Simmons has been critical of competitive eating in the past. He’s a fair-weather fan.
