The table at the mall was set under the skylights creating a spotlight effect. By no means, was it cool but rather very hot. And Kuntzman might want to know that the Arizona Mills Mall is in Tempe, not outside of Tempe. What an idiot.

couple of other things to point out: 1. The total calories at the end of the article compare to a 2000 calorie diet, which health magazines have already published average american consumption at over 4000 calories a day. So Joey would only be taken care of for less than five days. Also, he is an athlete, so he burns even more calories each day.
I also like the 3rd and 4th paragraphs. Why say that, then quote exactly what you just said?

[Some are calling Chestnut’s 59-1/2 HDB performance the greatest achievement in the history of human competition.
“It’s the greatest achievement in the history of human competition,” said George Shea, chairman of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, the governing body of all stomach-centered sports.]

“Also, he is an athlete, so he burns even more calories each day.”

Athletes do burn more calories than average, and competitive eaters are athletes. But can the consumption of massive amounts of calories (which is what qualifies Joey as an athlete) cause you to burn more calories? It’s a paradox for the ages.

I’m no Mr.Nutrition, but I do know you burn 30% of the calories in proteins during digestion. So I’m sure that helps.

Over the last 10 years, I have eaten Nathan’s hot dogs in temperatures from slightly above freezing (a December qualifyer in Chatanooga TN held outdoors and in a TV promo spot at Coney Island in the late fall, as well as in Las Vegas in the DROP DEAD heat of 115 degrees, as well as in 7 Coney Island finals and I can honestly say that once you get going, the temperature is irrelevent. You zone out EVERYTHING, including the melodies floating out of George and Rich’s mouths. I have also competed in TEMPE and won there, in the same location as Joey. Temperature means nothing to a pro eater. If it is hot, you splash or dump sold cold water on your head and you just get going.

NOTHING should be taken away from Joey, 59.5 is unbelievable and Kobi will have to work for his title this year more than ever, if he is able to compete.
