Business Week has an article about the financial side of competitive eating reporting that Joey Chestnut received over $100,000 from Pepto Bismol. Tim Janus says that he has not earned more than $35,000 in a year and wishes that compensation was distributed more evenly.

As I said yesterday, lots of people as in almost every single eater in MLE is getting……..yes, let us say it differently………shafted financially. Joey is going to need his pepto-bismol funds for his medical problems but those are self-induced. People, almost to a person, love publicity. There are many wonderful people in competitive eating who will have their short or long time in the spotlight and enjoy that and other things, comraderie, the people they meet along the way, the adventures. There will always be people/ eaters who will join with enthusiasm and excitement and have their challenges and adventures. As they wane for different reasons, others will happily replace them. But make no mistake, this is entertainment. It never was and never will be a true sport because the money just isn’t there. Oh it is there all right, for the Sheas and for the sponsors but that is it. Even in the NBA which is going out on a very serious strike, it is all about who earns the most. The lowest paid players, even if those lowest are huge figures by the standards of most of us, cannot afford to not play, to not work like the players who earn millions and millions and can take even a year off. Competitive eating is entertainment. It pleases many, it lines the pockets of MLE, that’s it. Enjoy your entertainments and eatfeats. That is why we are here.
