CNN's Eatocracy blog has an interview with Suzanne "Suzilla" French about her show on Planet Green. She made her debut in competitive eating in 2009 at Corndogorama because she needed money to pay off her student loan.

    I get irked every time I read people write things such as “She’s the fourth-ranked competitive eater in the world”. CNN can’t afford to do the slightest bit of research, it’s crazy. Maybe my new goal in life should be to approach various news outlets with ridiculous made up stories and see how many I can get them to print.

    For laughs I Googled CNN and Sonya Thomas. CNN has a site devoted to The Black Widow listing all the stories they wrote about Sonya being the number four eater in the world and top overall woman eater. http://topics.cnn.com/topics/sonya_thomas

    I posted on the CNN site that they need to do a little fact checking when your own organization disputes your own story. The Indianapolis Colts just claimed they’re the number one football team in the NFL. So I guess the Super Bowl’s off this year.

    Oh yeah I like the way Suzy talks about the corn dog eating competition but fails to mention that she lost to another woman no less. I was hoping it would be different, but hearing it from her own words is making this woman out to be a con artist. I’m finding everything about her to phoney.

    Every legit eater and fans of competitive eating need to post a comment on CNN story’s site calling this Suzy fraud out. Her press material bull crap is one thing, but CNN repeating it? That ain’t right. I hope CNN isn’t planning an interview any time soon with a legit eater that Suzy and now CNN claims she is better than. Good luck on the Fourth of July when the only eater that returns your call is Dale Boone — yikes.

    Number one because MLE said so? The list of ranked eaters by MLE is certainly impressive but since they limit the contest to the people who they “own” its a flawed ranking at the very least. In no way does MLE decide for the world of CE who is better than who. Torres is a good example of how flawed and CLC how corrupt MLE is when ranking CE. Come on people, WAKE UP!
    I just sent a letter praising the number #4 eaterMs. French and her accomplishments to CNN and several other media outlets.

    What stands out to me is the amount of attention and controversy that Suzilla has generated. She is becoming a/the public face of CE. The rest of us are bothered by the ranking issues and the fact that no independent research is being done to check claims. Maybe CNN came across the WLOCE rankings and didn’t understand the split innthe eating world between federations?

    For one thing, Suzy and the show aren’t claiming that she’s the 4th ranked WOMAN competitive eater in the world, they’re saying she is the 4th ranked competitive eater, which is just insane. Regardless of WLOCE, MLE, or whatever the hell ranking system you want to use, this chick was UNKNOWN until this show, and has hardly any competitive eating accomplishments. She clearly has not done anything CLOSE to the likes of Joey Chestnut, Kobeyashi, Bertoletti, the Black Widow, or plenty others, so bottom line is, she is nowhere near the 4th best competitive eater. I do not see how you could possibly argue that she is.

    That program will also serve to increase her ability to beat legitimate world class eaters.

    Just think, if Boone’s league takes Koby’s name off the list, who doesn’t want to be there anyway, Zilla can become the #3 ranked eater in the world.

    And if she could … somehow… move ahead of #3, she could be the world’s second ranked eater, right behind the world champ himself.

    I am giddy with excitement thinking of the possibilities.

    ‘Zilla is certainly the best female eater on a television program, and she is cute and entertaining! Gosh, darn it, I wonder how she would stack up against Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas (just google her), “The Lovely” Juliet Lee, or Stephanie Torres, even though she is considered the #4-ranked eater in the world (by whom?).

    Self-proclaimed World Champion Dale Boone has been beaten (and badly) by Sonya Thomas and on several occasions the poor thing could not keep his food down. Yet, he is ranked # 1 in the world in the same organization in which Ms French is ranked # 4.

    To piggy back off that last comment, Suzilla may have problems battling much less talented figures than Sonya Thomas or Stephanie Torres. It’s troubling enough that she couldn’t complete the challenge at Fat Sal’s. But is that the issue? It’s unlikely we’ll ever see any showdowns since the show is more about showcasing Ms. French, publicizing the places she visits, and having eat-offs with amateur locals. There’s no incentive for her to face someone and lose credibility. The bigger deal (to me) is how the WLOCE rankings have been given prominence by this new program. The media continues to parrot this “ranked #4” line. This is something that won’t be undone so easily. There’s a lot of heat and light being exposed here on eatfeats, but who knows if that will affect that the show’s ratings. The controversy might get more people tuning in. I’m curious if IFOCE is preparing any response.
