Coney Island temperature increase from 1 pm to 4 pm
Both The Brooklyn Paper and the New York Post wrote articles about the time shift of the Nathan’s finals three hours later and the possibility for hotter weather during the competition. To determine the average increase in temperature, the following table lists the 12:51 pm and 3:51 pm temperatures for JFK Airport for the past ten July 4s using data from Wunderground.com.
Year | 12:51 | 3:51 | Change |
---|---|---|---|
2002 | 96.1 | 97.0 | 0.9 |
2003 | 81.0 | 86.0 | 5.0 |
2004 | 77.0 | 77.0 | 0.0 |
2005 | 78.1 | 75.9 | -2.2 |
2006 | 84.9 | 78.1 | -6.8 |
2007 | 70.0 | 70.0 | 0.0 |
2008 | 77.0 | 80.1 | 3.1 |
2009 | 78.1 | 82.0 | 3.9 |
2010 | 95.0 | 99.0 | 4.0 |
2011 | 81.0 | 84.9 | 3.9 |
Avg | 81.8 | 83 | 1.2 |

Another look into the statistical mind of who is OJR, what this really highlights to me is that there is no comparison (if there ever was) of what Kobayashi did last year in an air-conditioned environment, none whatsoever to what Joey and all of the competitors do on the Nathan’s stage. Demonstration only, he got paid well as he will again for July 4th but……

This new time, given the likelihood of warmer temps, makes things interesting.
Based on the last 5 years, there’s an 80% chance that it will be 3 to 4 degrees warmer than it would be at the normal start time for Nathan’s. If that’s the case, HDB totals should be down from previous years, which may translate into as much as three or four HDBs for the top Dogs—-Joey, Pat, and X, and a couple or three for eaters in the next tier: Sonya, Stonie, and Bob, and so on.
Conditioning will likely play more of a part in placings than usual.
Oh, and to Pondering, that’s a real good point about differences in totals eaten in a climate-controlled environment versus eating outside.

So he was. No one can remember much about it because it was a farce.

Hopefully the weather will hold a bit so we can see some impressive numbers.

I think the average should take the absolute values of change into account. That means no negative values. It’s hard to expect a change of only 1.2 when 7 out of 10 days have experienced a higher change (up to a negative 6.8 change).
Anyway, i don’t think it matters that much. And if it does, even if sightly, it will affect everyone. It won’t make it easier to break a record.

The slimmer eaters like the hot days. Sonya loved it when is super hot, it helped her against the bigger eaters who have a harder time with the heat. Stonie would benefit on a hot day.
