Dale Boone’s Apple Ugly techniques questioned
The Salisbury Post has an article about controversy over Dale Boone’s use of hot tea at the July 4 Apple Ugly eating contest:
After friends pointed that out, [contest runner-up Keatin] Shelton e-mailed the Apple Baking Co., which organized the competition, to say that he didn’t think Boone’s record should count.
“I believe the tea may have given him an advantage,” Shelton wrote. “Anyway your rules were broken.”
The rules say that contestants can have cups of water. The rules also say contestants can’t use condiments on Uglies — which are “delicious enough on their own.”
The contest organizers say that Boone’s victory will stand.
There has been previous controversy over hot beverages in pastry eating competitions. Some competitors objected to the use of hot coffee in the 2003 San Gennaro Cannoli Eating Championship

Boone, Boone, Boone. I am shocked you are still out there eating. I kind of doubt that you really ate that pizza if it really weighs as much as I hear. I hear it weighs about 7 pounds and they don’t let pros eat. Did they not recognize you or did they not care that you were a pro eater?
Anyhow I guess you did eat that pizza so to that I say a job well done. Do they have a plaque on the wall or anything to show your accomplishment?

I’ve never been a Boone fan, but I can’t imagine the contest organizers didn’t see him putting tea in his cups…So they must not have had an isue w/ it. Sounds like a case of Keatin was pissed he didn’t know about the hot tea trick…I’ll bet you he knows for next time.

The judges saw Dale with the tea, they met and decided hot tea was not a condiment plus the rules did not say that the “Ugly Eaters” were only allowed water, they simply said that water would be provided. Keatin himself said he learned alot from Dale and looks foward to next year. Throught out the entire contest the sportsmanship between the two guys could not have been better. I am sure alot more of the contestants will show up with a hot beverage next year. It should be interesting!
