Hi everyone. Just to clarify, the comp involved 750 grams (1.65 pounds) of super hot (spicy) chili con carne to be eaten with a teaspoon and the bowl only to be lifted from table on completion. Disqualified if bowl not deemed clean enough. Only 4 out of the 12 finalists completed their bowl. Winner Daniel Mercer did it in just under 39 seconds claiming his cash prize of $5000 (that’s more than US$5000). The biggest cash prize for an Aussie eating comp we’ve ever heard of! Cheers, Crescenzo 🙂

How hot was the chili? Trust me, it was a scorcher. The chef’s secret recipe included the dreaded habanero chili. Spectators were invited to taste test before the start of the comp. An honorable mention to finalist Lee Williams who caused a roar in the crowd but deciding to compete shirtless moments before kick-off. Only in Australia!

    Habaneros? People eat them raw.

I’m telling you now anonymous, I’ve eaten many a habenero raw, and I’m telling you now, it was MUCH hotter. Much closer to the heat level of a ghost chilli, with a habenero kick.
