Dave Wagner was interviewed for an upcoming documentary on competitive eating about recording a controversial video at last year's Nathan's qualifier in Escondido, CA. He thinks the documentary, which is hoping for a late August release, will be critical of the IFOCE.

What a tremendous waste of effort on the part of everyone involved, and what delusion too! Nobody’s going to give a shit about this documentary. Competitive eating barely registers on the radar of the population at large. The average American will care even less about some fledgling documentarian’s efforts to highlight its minutiae. Good luck selling fifty copies of it.

And the sad part is he just about broke even or lost a few after convincing some schmuckto invest 20 or 30 grand in the project . I know that to be true because he told me

Great effort, guys. My point is that this documentary is being produced without the cooperation of MLE, so it really can’t be following any of the competitors that anybody in this world knows anything about. Therefore it is not appropriate — however much you wish for it to be — to compare it to “Pumping Iron” or to “Spellbound” or to “Wordplay” or to “King of Kong,” each of which featured the very best competitors in its field. So face it, guys, instead of debating the irrefutable: there are thousands of failed films produced every year, and this documentary, for which Dave Wagner was interviewed about a throwaway incident that only fifty people ever gave a shit about, is destined to be among them.

Dave pay no attention to 2:50 comment This is great for the sport. Would you rather sit through the art and zen of competitive eating? After the first 20 min one retired IFOCE member fell asleep in the theatre. Anythng being produced without the cooperation of MLE is a winner right there. If MLE had a hand in producing the documentary you can rest assure cheaters like CLC would come off smelling like roses

Valid point, although the center of CE is not revolving around mle any longer. Thanks to A. Richman the independent world is stronger and more widely recognized than before, look at all the little unsanctioned contests. Thanks to Nathans mle will continue to exist and may never go away. The entertainment value alone may well be worth the price of admission then again maybe not

Oh, my God. Do you really think you’re going to see this thing on television or in some theater? Any one can make a move. Push “record.” That’s all there is to it. But good luck getting it out there. This thing is going nowhere fast.

I wasn’t making it about whether it was sanctioned by the MLE or not but I still get asked “Are you gonna beat that Chinese guy??” on a regular basis so i’m thinking maybe name recognition beyond Kobayashi and to a lesser extent Joey, outside of the CE community is virtually non-existent ..I don’t know anything about those film-makers but the examples given OJ and I show that something relatively obscure can be elevated into the American consciousness ..see “Exit Through the Gift Shop” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exit_Through_the_Gift_Shop

MLE had nothing to do with the actual production of Zen though of course they participated. Zen came from Crazy Legs and his two close friends in independent film period. They did the whole thing together, MLE came along for their ride. They put zilch funds into it and it is lasting far longer and continues to sell and be seen on Netflix and available for sale on Amazon etc. Cannot say the same for the books written about competitive eating. All of you haters are nothing but plain jealous. If you spent more time supporting everyone in competitive eating like Legs does, you might get farther. He isn’t perfect, who is?

11:39, I know who made “Zen…” and how it was made. I’m not stupid. The point is that MLE participated in it. They were happy to help. Actually, you’re simplifying what happened with the books. The Sheas participated reluctantly in Fagone’s book, at first having nothing to do with it, and later helping a little bit. They participated much more in Nerz’s book by giving him road gigs from which to experience the competitite eating adventure.

“Hater in the house”? No. Just someone who’s not an idiot about the prospects for this movie. You guys are never in touch with reality on this site. You constantly overestimate your appeal and fame. You constantly delude yourselves into thinking that we’re “this close” to being in the Olympics or on weekly television. None of you ever shows any aptitude for the way the business itself works. You all buy the hype delivered tongue-in-cheek as if were meant to be serious. Guys, get real.

Anon 11:39, you’re right, no one is perfect. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes. But when a person blatantly cheats, it’s not a mistake. They made the conscious decision to do the wrong thing and must then regain the trust of everyone effected by their choice. It doesn’t matter how nice they are before or after the incident. They did the wrong thing, it’s on video, and they need to at least acknowledge it and apologize so they and everyone else can move on. Until then, they are just stuck where they are.

While Crazy legs is a great ambassador to CE,this is just further evidence that the Sheas are fascists who will not allow anything that might keep them from squeezing every dollar they can before the general public gets hip to the fact that CE is as phoney as wrestling(and as full with drug usage).

Dave Wagner go for it. You have evry right to do this. You saw what you saw and some people wish you hadnt sawn it. You should tell the peoples making it about this sight and if they want to talk too eaters to let us know. I am sure some will talk about what they sawn as well.

Just wanted to clarify the point that it’s not my project, but another team that has been working on this film for about 18 months (I was told). The director was pointed toward my video and blog post and contacted me last month about telling him the story behind it, which I agreed to, since, hey, it’s a chance to be in a movie. How friggin cool is that?
As for the back and forth, it doesn’t bother me. I’m glad Conti still has his supporters, and I certainly don’t wish him any harm. I’m not trying to “get him” and/or sabotage his career. Hell, before that day last year, I only knew him as “that guy with the dreads from the promo poster”. For me, it’s simply a case of the guy cheated, I happened to be the simpleton in the crowd with the camera that caught him, he was called on it, and nothing seemed to come of it. Life goes on, right? I’m actually kind of surprised that the uproar has lasted this long… call me a Pollyanna, but it seems to me the smart thing to do would be to fess up, offer a semi-reasonable “excuse” for his actions, apologize, claim he’ll compete clean, and move forward. I’d still like to see him competing. I say, eat clean and let the best man/woman win.
Yeah, I guess I am Pollyannish… ah, well…

Wagner the only reason the “uproar” has lasted this long is because some people are jealous of Crazy Legs (and anyone else) getting more attention than they do, and they’ll wait in ambush for an opportunity to pull the rug out from under him. But Legs is both smart and resilient.
Crazy Legs Conti knows who he is and what he’s about and he knows what to attend to and what to avoid. That’s why he doesn’t waste his time engaging mean-spirited people on this blog. What’s to gain?
You’re a very good writer Wagner. With continued work your talent may approach that of Legs himself.

Rhonda, it’s difficult for me to view Conti as the victim in all this. While I certainly don’t want to see his career affected by all the backlash from his cheating, he pretty much brought it on himself. It’s hard for me to admire his “resilience” for enduring the sh1tstorm that he created. Whether other people are jealous or not is kind of moot, it seems to me. The consensus seems to be that he is a smart, generous, witty guy, who is a great ambassador for the sport, and I have no reason to doubt that assessment, never having met the guy. No doubt it’s true. But this mess is his, and it’s hard for me to generate any pity for him over it.
