Nice. A very busy month for the IFOCE. The economy clearly has not affected professional CE.

We hope to see many of you in Lewisville on Sept. 26 for the fifth World Tamale Eating Championship. Cash prizes paid for top-6 — woo hoo! During the 2008 championship, 15 contestants combined to eat 330.5 tamales – about 27½ dozen. That is slightly more than 41 pounds of food.
Just to whet your appetite (ha!) for the competition, here is some history on our event.

Note this morning from IFOCE that Juliet Lee plans to participate in Lewisville this year, as is former Texas State Fair corny dog champ Brent Ricord.

Nice job Nic. . .just insult a sponsor’s food right to their face. Sheesh.
I wanted to go to make up for how terrible I did at tamales last year compared to Biller, but I’m way traveled out after doing 2 long distance contests recently. I don’t know how all the top eaters can travel so much; it is brutally tiring.

In the Boston pizza contest, I hope they make eaters finish one slice / pizza before going to the next slice / pizza. It could be tempting to eat the center portions and leave the crust in hopes that the judges will overlook it and give full credit, when it’s the crust that’s the most difficult to eat.
Eaters should not get credit for eating a slice until the ENTIRE slice is eaten —- crust included.
Also, sometimes, on occasion, those rebellious, crusty portions seem to jump right out of some eaters’ hands into the cups, which become quite a haven for those nomadic, tougher pizza sections.

Agree, Rhonda. In past pizza contests (Three Brothers), they’ve allowed eaters to cast aside the crusts at a penalty of one slice per four crusts (or something like that). So eating an 8-slice pie minus the crusts would give you a score of 6 slices.
This option makes sense initially, but in what other contest are eaters allowed to only eat part of a food item and discard a perfectly edible portion of it? Plus it forces the judges to make calls about how clean the crust must be before it can be considered “just a crust.” It’s a mess. Just eat the whole slice and be done with it.

At the LaFamilia pizza event last fall in Times Square, we were required to eat one slice at a time to include the crust before moving on to the next slice. That will probably be the case at Boston. Will be a great battle in Beantown.

Here we go again… US Male commenting about his next contest. I think he’ll do well, his ego might do a bit better, maybe 6th, but USM himself will probably finish 7th out of the expected dozen or so entrants. Hope PrettyBoy can represent in his home town. I have to believe Legs is the fav, but an upset is always a possibility.

This is going to be the battle of the midranked eaters. While it wont be the spectacle of Joey or Pat it will be an awesome ruler to measure Eaters that are in the 11-50 range. Cant wait!!!

this one is going to be so tight it may only be a slice or two that I beat Pretty Boi and US Male by. Maybe three on Boi actually.

This will be very competitive. Any one of a half-dozen people could win it. Will Wing Kong or Flash Gordon be there? If so I make them, along with Pat from Moonachie the triad of favorites, but Pretty Boy, Legs, Steak, or US Male could easily win it too.
In my close to 10 years of following CE (IFOCE), I can’t remember a contest with so many possible winners. If it were on Pay Per View I’d pay to see it! To me, in a way, this is more interesting than the Krystal Finals, since I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that either Joey or Koby will win (both of whom will finish with 75-81 Krystal points). And I look for Humble Bob to be third, with the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th spotsgoing to Hall, Pat, Sonya, and Tim (NOT in that order, however).
But in Boston pizza, it’s a real horse race with a full field of contenders! It’s exciting!

Regarding Lewisville Tamales, Juliet will be favored to win, especially if it’s a dunking event, but Nathan Biller will put plenty of pressure on her. He could even win.

Dang, this is going to be a good one. I’m with Rhonda, if given a choice between watching the Krystal finals or this contest, I’d choose this contest. In this one, I’d pick Philbin over Conti by half a slice.

Pat,
I hope your van breaks down on the NY Thruway. I also hope that after about an hour delay you get picked up by the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Team Bus and fill the role of ‘Lotion Boy’.
Just kidding, see you in Boston for the 5pm contest, dont be late!
