How on earth was there not enough water for James? They only have a bazillion cups out there and they bring their own fluids. That is interesting!

Coming from someone who competes in the qualifiers yearly, you have plenty of time to grab extra cups before the competition starts and you can bring your own liquid as well if you don’t like the water they provide you or want additional…point being that’s no excuse if he believes that’s why his performance wasn’t what it could’ve been.

@11:22– the fact that you need to specify “competes in the qualifiers yearly” tells us all we need to know about you:
1. You never have made the July 4th finals
2. Operationally speaking, qualifiers are not nearly as strict as the July 4th Coney Island contest. You wouldn’t know this, though.
3. You are clearly not a top eater. The best eaters get called out to stage closer to the contest start time than others, so they have less time to prepare, count and fill water cups, as well as mix in any flavorings they are using.
4. At coney, there is not just “extra water” floating around on stage. Almost every eater brings their own liquids, which are supposed to be delivered to each eater’s spot on stage before the introductions.
Keep it up at the annual qualifiers, I’m sure your friends are all jealous when you tell them you competed at a Nathans hot dog contest and got 3rd place!!!

The qualifiers are run much more loosely than Coney. There are strict cup limits for the table on the Fourth of July. Everyone is also running on a pretty tight schedule. There isn’t time to simply grab more cups or more fluid. There is even less time to set up when you’re third to last to step up on the stage like James.
