Joey Chestnut qualifies for the Wing Bowl

While the San Francisco Bay area will not produce a Super Bowl winner in 2006 (or apparently many years into the future), the odds that of that region producing a champion in Wing Bowl 14 greatly increased when San Jose State student Joey “Jaws” Chestnut qualified by drinking a gallon of milk in 41 seconds Monday morning (philly.com video) . (The other favorite for the Wing Bowl, Rich LeFevre, lived in suburban San Francisco before retiring to Las Vegas several years ago). Chestnut has made five trips to the eastern time zone since the start of November to pursue his competitive eating career. It will be interesting to see if Wing Bowl 15 has geographic restrictions in addition to prohibiting previous competitors to ensure that a local wins the contest.

I just watched the video and all I can say is “that was amazing” when he was done he was smiling and laughing. That was potentially the coolest thing I’ve ever seen and I have been to Thialand.

Wow! It wasn’t too long ago that medical professionals thought that could not be done; just not possible. It’s a WB stunt for sure but what does being able to shotgun a gallon of milk really show as far as competitive eating goes (I know this was a stunt for Wing Bowl and not a statement to the circuit)? I think nothing. We all know he has the capacity no doubt and he shows his system can take a gallon of milk and it is a big ‘wow’ feat but how does this make him more fearsome in say corned beef or hot dogs or whatever he competes in next? Thoughts? Joey is 22 or something, no?

I realize that this subject completely strays from the topic of competitive eating but let us all wish the best for our own Eric Badlands Booker . Eric is a conductor for the MTA and his union TWU has voted to strike, effective early Tuesday morning Dec 20th just in time for rush hour. Eric will more than likely join the hundreds of transit workers on the picket lines putting his job on the line as well. The striking workers will suffer financially as they will lose two days pay for every one day they are out of work. The union will also have to pay millions in fines. City transit conditions have been a horror for the workers for quite some time. I feel that Eric Booker and the rest of the striking workers deserve much more than the measly 3.5 percent over 3 years that the MTA has proposed.Consider the average transit workers salary at 40K ,MTA’s proposed raise would come to $12-$1500 a year .Peanuts! You can make more than that at one IFOCE contest. This strike is meant to send a message that they will not take it anymore. The strike not only affects transit, but everyone in NYC. My financial situation will suffer as well for i myself will find it quite difficult or nearly impossible in finding a way into Downtown Brooklyn and Midtown Manhattan. where my jobs are located . Badlands we commend you. Let us hope the MTA will think this over and give in to the transit workers demands and let us hope the strike is a short one because we all know you need to put food on the table for the family as well as yourself!

    Yo Mama,

All I can say if you don’t know how that stunt translates to performance at the table then you are an idiot.

Bubba, OK so I’m an idiot in your eyes. Tell me how does this make him more fearsome in say corned beef or hot dogs or whatever he competes in next – he’s not drinking but having to chew, swallow, etc

Thank you Loren, it was a fun stunt. I was a little bit nervous because they were so confident that it was impossible and it was my first time doing it with whole milk, but once I got into a rhythm the milk went down nice. I will see you in Las Vegas.

I tried drinking a quart of milk and i had trouble halfway. Chestnut is an example of what you can do if you seriously put your mind to it . He is one of the great talents of this era.

Yo Mama, Joey’s ranking is not based upon his past milk competition. Did you see his performance this past 4th of July? He was victorious at waffles. I think there was a world record with grilled cheese recently. Krystal Burgers is absolutely nothing overlook. You are an idot, talk to me when the Wing Bowl is over.

Hey Joey – I suppose it’s too late to make an offer now to keep you out of the Wing Bowl? Seriously, we ought to go to New Brunswick and pick up a few extra bucks by doing that pizza the day before. It would help to partially cover our expenses.

Rich & Joey set the date. I will videotape the last 3 minutes of the pizza challenge and put it on my site . Would not mind being a spectator for this one.

BB, What makes you think it’ll take those two more than minutes!?!

    Thanks from before Rich.

Yeah, the 3 minutes beautifulbrian videotapes may capture the beginning and end!

What i meant was whenever it appeared that they were on the verge of the last couple of bites, i would tape it. Three minutes is all i could fit on my site as far as video. I wish, but i am not able to post videos in their entirety as Lerman or Jarvis have that capability on their websites.
