The facebook for the Buffalo Wing Festival announces that Joey Chestnut will compete in two contests on Labor Day Weekend. On Saturday, September 4, he will compete against teams of five amateurs in a contest sponsored by Pepto Bismol. On September 5, Joey Chestnut will try to break Sonya Thomas' streak of three wins in the United States Chicken Wing Eating Championship.

This will be a for sure loss for joey I hate to say. If the amateur team can manage 10-15 wings per person, they should be able to take down joey.

Maybe this is the new direction the Sheas think should be taken. Give amateurs a chance to eat against some of the top eaters, not only Joey. Since for the ESPN Nathans the cameras are almost solely focussed on the top , perhaps the table enders are going to be replaced with amateurs in the future (not for Nathans although who knows, nothing is set in stone). Eat against (fill in the blank) could be the new draw, with teams of eaters including those not in the top ten. The sponsors care only about publicity to generate income. Joey and Pepto can only go so far.

All kidding aside, this may well prove to be a very good angle, which may serve as a pipeline for garnering attention from mainstream America, and it’s probably good when amateur teams win once in awhile.
After all, when it takes five people to outeat one CE star, that speaks well for both entities.

Good point again Rhonda. It doesn’t really matter how many people watched Kobi in Canada or how many watch whatevers. It is the publicity generated which counts. Sheas can spin this any way they wish. They cut back on certain big expenses and do not have to deal with their eaters doing this and that and asking them for this and that. Very interesting development. Not good for the eaters, good for the sponsors and for MLE.

This is not a very good idea for Joey, how is he going to get rid of all the stuff he eats on the 4th to be ready for the 5th?

Most of us doing wings on Sunday are doing the Buffet Bowl on Saturday. Joey is in the same boat as us. I think he can handle it just fine.
