if stonie practices like furious pete used to (aka german tv interview from 08-09ish) he might be able to beat chestnut at nathans in a couple years

I love Sonya and Tim, but no one sees them as serious threats to Joey these days. Since Pat left MLE, Matt Stonie is the only eater who threatens Joey’s dominance. I think it’s time for the MLE rankings to reflect this reality.

I do think Stonie could beat Joey in hotdogs with practice, but I also think that Joey’s dominance in hotdogs with his constant practice has come at a price to his health (just guessing). Stonie is really young, he might be better off not to do damage to his body with hotdogs. Joey is going to retire in the next few years (just guessing) anyway. Tim and Stonie could certainly be a rivalry in hotdogs. Sonya is going to have to start practicing if she wants to, up her game, she will know what she wants to do about the newcomers and her ranking. Should be very interesting.

Bertoletti was never really a serious threat to Joey, either. Sure, once in awhile a Pat, Tim, Sonya, and even Bob could “sneak up” and beat Joey, but those were exceptions.

Joey also helped his cause by avoiding foods in which other eaters were dominant (e.g. Jalapenos: Pat, and Sonya to a lesser degree; Oysters: Sonya, and Pat to a lesser degree, Sweets: Pat; Clams: Sonya, and Adrian to a lesser degree, and Corn on the Cob: Legs, Jammin’ Joe, Bob, Hall Hunt, et. al.).

Matt Stonie is slowly approaching Joey’s level, but Matt (and this is no slam against Matt’s amazing talent) will NEVER eat 60 HDBs. But, save that one contest, Matt can top Joey about half the time.

It is good for both Joey and Stonie that Takeru Kobayashi is not in MLE, because I have little doubt Koby would win most of the events in which those three went head-to-head.

I’m not saying that I that I think Matt should be ranked first. But I think there’s no question that he deserves the #2 spot now.

I don’t add my 2 cents in very often on here, but I think people are missing one VERY IMPORTANT aspect of competition. That is… MOTIVATION!! Lol Joey won Nathan’s for the past 7 years or whatever his streak is and has been dominant for the last few years without much true competition. Do you really think his motivation is the same now as it was back when he was first starting out and wanting to be #1? Hell I have 137 food challenge wins over the past 3 years. Is my 138th win going to be as exiting as my 3rd win? Hell no it’s not!!

I am not supporting 1 eater over another because at the end of the day my opinion really doesn’t matter, but there comes a point where it’s not just about “capacity” or “level of ability”. There is also another main factor called motivation. Matt just started a few years ago and is only 21. Joey started like 10 years ago and has been there & done that. Compare it to lifting weights… Is lifting as fun when you are 30 years old as it was when you were in high school playing sports? Hell no it’s not. This is where MLE and everyone completely fails. For the #1 competitive eater in the country to only make a little over 100k is a joke. Mediocre poker players & UFC fighters can make that much in 1 fight or tournament.

For an eater to train hard just to win a few thousand dollars (if they are lucky) takes motivation more than anything. I don’t ever correspond with Pat who was my favorite eater, but I remember reading once that he averaged $40k doing food competitions, and he stopped IFOCE to focus on his career and stuff that will actually make money to live on. It is a joke that the #2 competitive eater had to stop to focus on doing something that makes more money. There has never been 1 second of my life that I thought about joining MLE, but I fully support everyone that does, because that takes true motivation… working your butt off to not get much in return other than having fun & getting to meet all of the other eaters. That may seem ignorant to some people, but MLE thinks way too small.

That was not meant to downgrade any eaters, particularly Matt & Joey. I’m just saying that when you compare the 2, I am betting that their levels of talent are much much closer than their levels of motivation are. The same goes for when you compare Miki & Sonya. Both are outstanding eaters, but the #1 ranked female eater in the world doesn’t make enough money to not need a job!! I bet their levels of motivation are pretty different too.

I am open to both positive & negative feedback on this post, but remember that before you waste your time referring negatively to me, I probably don’t care that you exist so your opinion definitely doesn’t matter. I have never said that I am one of the greatest eaters in the world. If I was though, lol I would not be motivated by just $100k.

I messed up the context of that last post. Before you waste your time referring negatively *ABOUT* me. 🙂

Randy, you make a valid point. I would go on to say that nature stipulates the upper level of potential to which a competitive eater can aspire to achieve, and motivation (or drive) is the vehicle with which that potential can be reached. Hence, a competitive eater with average potential will never be able to top someone like Matt or Joey (or yourself, Randy), regardless of that person’s motivation level.

Looking at Matt and Joey, I’m certain that as we speak, Joey’s motivation is nowhere near that of Matt’s. But Joey doesn’t need to eat with as much drive as Matt to win (most of the time)—-especially in HDBs.

I also think there’s a reverse correlation between motivation level and time spent in competitive eating (for most people), but with a few exceptions—-the greater the number of years one spends eating competitively, the less motivation, and vice-versa.

For instance, let’s look at Takeru Kobayashi. I’m convinced he has been more motivated the last 6 years than the first half dozen that he was a competitive eater, even though he won six Nathan’s Finals in a row from 2001 – 2006. When he first came on the scene, he was EASILY the world’s best competitive eater, with no question. Since 2007, he has needed to prove that he is—-both to others, as well as himself—-hence, the private challenges that he does.

The fact that just about everyone BUT the top competitive eater in the world cannot live comfortably without working a full time job underscores the fact that CE isn’t taken seriously as a sport or a form of entertainment. I don’t know that it ever will be.

I like these Eat Feats should do more of them

    Eater X vs Mikki
    Shoudt vs Adrian
    Juan vs Pablo
    Booker vs Eric the red
    A-train Ostoff vs Butler
    Lee vs Cardoard shell

and of coarse Seiken vs Bam Martinez

Also, Sonya versus X and Shoudt for 2013.

You make very good points Randy. Your feedback is very intelligently said and well thought out. What you say can be very true. Joey probably isn’t as motivated as he once was. When he beat Kobayashi at Nathans, he stood so proud at the front of center stage and hoisted that belt up with such pride. In 2013 it was more of a painful look along with a yeah I won, so what look. Matt & Miki have so much more potential. I think we will see them both get so much better and perhaps see a rivalry between them. No matter what position you hold in competitive eating, you have to be excited to see this.

To Rhonda I respect your opinions but, to state that Stonie will NEVER eat 60 hdb’s…. Cmon you can never count anyone out. Just like when you said there was NO WAY Jamie could beat Bertoletti. You say it’s not a slam to Matt but if someone were to tell me there was something I couldn’t do I would take it personally unless it defies the law of physics like being able to fly like superman.
