Wow. Simply incredible. This has been a historic couple of days. First B.O.B. sets an all time consumption record in chowder and then Joey gets taken down by a rookie (and it was even close). I’m having a hard time even wrapping my head around this feat by Ben. Great job man. Looking forward to seeing more performances like this in the future.

What a shocker!! Simply amazing..I bet everybody at IFOCE headquarters just about fainted when they caught wind of this. Last time something like this happened was NEVER!! Rookies aren’t supposed to take out anyone ranked in the top ten, let alone the number one ranked eater! I still can’t believe it. It’s safe to say Ben will easily eat 50 plus Nathans this year. Mark my words. Ben when your standing next to Joey and Koby at the finals you will have reached superstar status!! Good Luck not that you need it after this stellar performance.

FAKE!!! set up contest. Joey has already told he is leaving due to him getting a job with his degree. So this fake contest was to get ppl to think there a new eater coming up . While it was a deploy to get a new face for that soon to be gone iffoce.

Having seen Ben do some serious eatfeats, kitchen sink in 7.45mins, 20″ in a little over 6mins, clearing 20 or so plates at an El Torito brunch, etc… I knew he had some serious potential, but to beat Joey so soon is simply amazing, he finished his first plate while I still had about 23-25 flautas on my plate. I almost wanted to stop eating and just watch Joey and Ben go head to head… Ben could have collected another $350 if he wanted too but declined the indecent proposal from some guy.

in case it’s not reported later

    6th – Greg Moss 38 flautas
    7th – Damon Wells 35 flautas
    8th – Kevin Ross 32 flautas

I didn’t get in the money like I was hoping but I at least won my side bet with Kevin. 🙂

The contest was awesome and I think everyone had a good time including the crowd. The flautas were actually warm, fresh and very delicious (thats not me kissing ass either). I still can’t believe that I did so well but nonetheless it was a lot of fun and at worst I would of had a good time.

Here’s a test for your statistical talents, OJ. How many times has a number one ranked eater been beaten in a contest by a rookie?

Kobayashi had the moniker “The Prince” before he came to compete in the States, then had the moniker “The Tsunami.” Daisuke Matsuzaka became Dice-K, but his moniker in Japan in 1998 was Kaibutsu or Monster. He was rookie of the year in 1999 at age 18, when he went 16-5, striking out Ichiro Suzuki. three times in one game that season. Ichiro is Ichiro but Hideki Matsui was nicknamed Gorilla in Japan, originally a derisive nickname but which come to represent powerful hitting, turning a negative into a positive. Thus, Tsunami and Monsoon, Typhoon Ben, Gorilla, play with it kids and take it from here.

Steve Keiner was a rookie in 1999 when he defeated 2 time Nathan’s winner Hirofumi Nakajima, who would have been ranked #1 if there were rankings.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Keiner

In 2001, Kobayashi was a rookie (in American competitive eating at least) and defending Nathan’s champ Kaz Arai would have probably been #1.

Probably on the late end of this thread, figured I’d get in my two cents while I can….

Being that yesterday was my first “real” contest, I was blown away by the amount consumed by the “pros” out there, especially Joey and Ben. By the end of it I found myself peeking over just to get an up close glimpse of everything that was going down (I’ll keep lying to myself by saying it cost me a few flautas). Ben is truly a monster (in a good way), both in stature and eating ability. You don’t realize how big he is until you’re next to him. I’m 6’1″ and I felt like I was 10 years-old again when I stood next to him and Booker.

The flautas, as they were in the qualifier, were incredibly delicious. Except this time it seemed that they were much more densely stuffed than they were before. I just remember after putting the first few in my mouth that they definitely went down with less ease than a few months before. All the more reason for me to be in awe of how much Ben and Joey killed it.

And I don’t know if Booker does his rapping schtick at every event he’s in, but it’s no surprise that the IFOCE would want him almost everywhere they go. Yesterday would have been be far from the entertainemnt spectacle it was wthout him. I mean really, you can probably take only so much of watching us eat up there. I’m just glad I was gorgng my own face, because I wouldn’t be too enthused to be on the watching end of it. Having said that, Booker seems to change the whole dynamic of these event. He unquestionably lived up to the hype I had for him after seeing his TV appearances in the years past. The IFOCE better hope he’s around for a while, because I’d imagine there aren’t very many other personalities out there (Crazy Legs is the only one I think of) that grab people’s attention quite like Booker can.

As for the contest, it was easily the most fun I’ve had at an eating competition (minus the reality-check for my CE “future”). Ironically Ben was the first one to congratulate me when they announced my results. Without talking to him much, he seems like he’s just this real humble guy who knows that he eats a shit-ton, but doesn’t have to flaunt it to anyone. Congrats to him, and thanks to all the other eaters for not “big-timing” the large contingent of amateurs there. Hopefully that’s not my last go ’round…too good of a time to not do it again.

    and one for the road……

I’m new to this site, so I have the faintest clue of what most of the jabber is that goes on around here. I will give you this tough, it is extremely amusing, whatever it is about.

So Brian, I don’t know who you are, nor any of the other people that are referenced, but definitely do not stop your rants and rampages on this site. It is precious material for me to look at when I’m bored. And if (for some reason) this post bothers you (Brian right? I don’t know your last name), I’d be honored if you had something nasty to say to/about me. It would make my day! And know that I am still a fan of it all regardless of what you say back.
