Ken Hoffman on judging Davekos
Ken Hoffman of the Houston Chronicle has a column about serving as Pete Davekos’ judge in the recent Nathan’s finals which reports that officials were told to look out for hidden regurgitation:
“The thing you have to look for,” the head judge told us, “is when the eaters hold a big cup of water to their mouth. Some of the eaters have been spitting hot dogs into the cup, and some have been vomiting in the cup. That’s against the rules, and they have to be penalized.”

Davekos was actually credited with 30HDB’s initially, but quickly told Hoffman the true count was 25…..true integrity!!

Wow. Good for Pete. If only all eaters had the same integrity, then we wouldn’t have to rely on the scorekeepers to screw up the results. Sorry I’m being negative again.

Undoubtedly, Pete is following the excellent example of sportsmanship set by Juliet Lee. I think we owe both of them a round of applause.

This was especially important, since 9th through 13th place was at stake. Let’s hope they re-adjusted all that prize money…..everyone knows the hefty payouts Nathan’s provides for the top 13 finishers.
