Kobayashi visits Coleman’s Bar & Grill

Kobayashi has a blog entry about his visit to Crazy Legs Conti’s apartment, where a poster of Conti in the style of an old-time circus poster hangs.

Kobayashi also writes about his trip to the NY Natural History Museum with several pictures of dinosaurs.

If I were Crazy Legs I would feel like I had been knighted, having the only male figure of competitive eating royalty visit my dwelling.

CE royalty has certainly been defiled by way of the rankings. This is perhaps as much pronounced with Janus being placed # 4 in the world ahead of Sonya, as it is with Koby’s demotion to # 2.

I DO LIKE AND RESPECT Eater “X” and this is no knock against him. He is one of my favorite eaters! (And he’s the most handsome, with Legs a close second.) I’m only knocking the fraudulent ranking system.)

To shed a different light on this travesty, remember that usually, when the IFOCE introduces the eaters in a contest, the MC introduces them by prefacing their names with their current world titles. A full introduction of Eater X (at # 4) and Sonya (at # 5) would be as follows, as the lower ranked Sonya is introduced first:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, she’s the Vienna Sausage eating, Baked Bean eating, Cheesecake eating , Chicken Nugget eating, Chili Cheese Fries eating, Crab Cake eating, Deep-Fried Okra eating, Hard-Boiled Egg eating, Fruitcake eating, Big Daddy Barrick Burger eating, Hardees Thickburger eating, Jambalaya eating, Lobster eating, Meatball eating, Mince Pie eating, Oyster eating, Pulled Pork Sandwich eating, Quesadilla eating, Sweet Potato Casserole eating, Taco eating, Toasted Ravioli eating,
Turducken eating, Tater Tot eating, Virginia Ham Biscuit eating, Chinese Lotus Seed Bun eating, Chinese Vegetable Dumpling eating, Salty Ball eating, and Popcorn eating champion of the World …. Sonya ‘The Black Widow’ Thomas!”

“Ladies and Gentleman, his World Records are in Cannoli, Tamales, and Tiramisu: Tim ‘Eater X’ Janus!”

Additionally, how many of Janus’ three records were achieved with Sonya in attendance? None! How many of Sonya’s records were achieved with Tim in attendance? At least five.

Seems ridiculous? It should. If not, then it further shows the anti Sonya, anti-Koby bias.

Tim has not ever won a single event that Sonya has also attended, let alone set a standard. He may someday WIN a contest that Sonya participates in, but he needs to improve further to do so, and hope Sonya has either starts declining in talent, has a less than favorable day, or is penalized for some reason or other.

Gentleman Joe was right on speedeat.com all along when he stated that the ranking system in the IFOCE was a sham. (This was in 2004 when they ranked ESPN correspondent Darren Rovell # 50 because he ate a mere six Nathan’s hot dogs.)

    You think this isn’t about $$$$ ? !!

    Rhonda,
You should not be picking on Eater X. He has worked hard to make improvements this year while sitting quietly behind Humble Bob in the rankings. Let him enjoy his glory. Titles are hard to come by these days; many of Sonya’s were a one time thing or no longer happen. Rankings are based on how you perform today, not yesterday. Her demotion in rank does not detract from her once number 2 position in the world and greatness. Joey, Koby, and Pat do not hold nearly as many titles, but they unquestionably deserve being ranked ahead of her. Also, as for Koby, the Nathan’s Competition is like the super bowl; it doesn’t matter if you lost once to another team during the regular season, if you win the super bowl, you are the champ. Koby will be back next year to retrieve the Mustard Yellow belt and his number one spot in the world.

I (heart) Sonya, but here are some numbers from 2007

    Tim beat Sonya four times:

    Pretzels: Sonya 17, Tim 17.5
    Nathan’s qualifiers: Sonya 36, Tim 41.5
    Nathan’s: Sonya 39, Tim 43.5
Chili Cheese fries: Sonya 5.29, Tim 5.31

She edged him out only twice:

in corned beef: Sonya: 9.64, Tim, 9.19
and in wings: Sonya 6.01, Tim 5.381

I think Sonya’s history is fantastic, but I don’t think Tim’s 2007 improvement should be discounted.

In defense of Sonya were Tim and Sonya both not in the Saint Patrick’s Day thing in March. I was not aware of Tim making it to the final four in that and I thought I saw some painted up guy with long hair cheering on Sonya in donuts in the semifinal round and I thought it was Tim. The wings was even more recent than that and Sonya beat Tim by over 1/2 of a pound as you have pointed out. In the Chili Cheese Fries I would hardly call 2-100ths of a pound much of a victory.

Wasn’t that a major eating event since it was telivised? Maybe not. I only know that had Juliet been there things would have been different.

Nancy I LOVE Eater X. I almost can’t tell you how much (but I could show you). But I’ll always defend Sonya first because she does a miraculous job as an invader in a man’s / much larger person’s sport. She’s the tiniest competitor and unfortunately is the easiest target for people to attack, both actively and passively, and that’s most unfortunate.

Sonya get’s about 1/3 of the respect that she deserves from those noneaters closest to the competitive eating community, as reflected on this Web site. People often have no balls, so I’ve grown a pair to help the young lady out..

She does get the respect she deserves from fans at large, however, who see the “sport” for what it is: big people (who absolutely should be able to eat more) against little people. Pound for pound Sonya is the second greatest eater this world has ever known. Kobayashi is the greatest!

You say her titles no longer happen. Give me the date of X’s last title and I’ll trump it with a more recent title that Sonya has.

Any eater can be an also ran and finish “ahead” of another in a given food. But it’s wins that indicate a winning spirit. There’s no substitute for that.

Romeo though I don’t agree with some of your ridiculous remarks, at least you have some guts coming to Sonya’s defense. I really hope she’s reading all this in hopes it fires her ass up! I still think that if she sets her mind to it, she will achieve several more titles regardless of who attends.

I won’t say many more, because the life span of a professional eater is only a few years. Sonya has been doing this for 4 years already, and she’s likely in the late afternoon of her competitive eating day. But I do think she still has 2 – 3 more good years and I believe if those who determine rankings can somehow become impartial, Sonya will move up at least two spots in the rankings before she calls it quits.

Regarding hot dogs: Tim was ahead of her all along and even increased his lead in the final minutes. What does that tell you? It tells me he can eat more than she can.

Right now Tim Janus IS indeed better than Sonya in Hot Dogs. That’s one food. What other food, however, has Tim won a contest at that Sonya has participated in?

With all the foods out there, having an edge over Sonya in but one or two foods makes his talents a bit shallow comparatively speaking. You think? What’s his problem?

He should be able to beat a much smaller female opponent in ALL foods. However, he’s lacking. And he’s a solar system behind Pat Bertoletti.

Don’t worry. Timmy is improving, and you know… one day he just might win a contest that she’s in. Miracles do happen, so let’s keep praying.

(Butch) Tim is one of the best eaters in the world and so is Sonya. Let’s hope they both are more professional than allowing this back and forth bickering to come between them because it seems like they are good friends and quality people.

I will also come to Sonya’s defense. She is a good person but also a private person. It took me awhile to understand that ,but we go back since 2003. I remember when she first came up. We started out websites around the same time. She has always been a big fan of my site and she has always been there for me . I will never forget the email she sent me in May 2004 just before my defense of the Carnegie Deli Pickle title. “Brian you dont know how much i want you to win” . I let her down and alot of others down that day but life goes on. As of now i will not tolerate any negative commentary about Sonya. She reads everything good and bad and she has feelings like everyone else. So just chill out . Pat is a great eater but considering what she has done for the sport and the legacy she has left upon us, they should reserve a number 3or 4 slot for her for as long as she stays in CE. I rest my case
