Krystalist: qualifiers start in approximately 2 weeks
The Krystalist blog has an entry about Jill Stoler’s 3rd place finish in the women’s division of the Chef One dumpling eating contest in Queens which mentions that the qualifier circuit for Krystal Square Off V will start in a “couple of weeks.” If qualifiers take place on weekends, this would put the initial qualifier on August 16/17 or August 23/24 depending on how the two weeks is rounded. This would result in 5 or 6 qualifiers if one qualifier a week is held.

With 56 days to the KSO V Finals and no contest dates or locations yet announced, who has IFOCE chosen as the winners of each qualifier? Announcing the contests at the last minute like this, only those already chosen or local eaters will be able to afford the higher last minute travel expense to attend and compete.

Krystals (and Nathan’s for that matter) should be invitational for the top 10, than have 5 or 6 qualifiers to give everyone else more of a fair chance of getting in and the playing field would be even, not 1st place with 80 and 2nd place with 50.. Too many land slide wins.

That’s a point to consider Anony, 10:27. The top 10 who attempt to qualify get in anyway, and it would save them travel costs. That would also make the qualifiers more competitive and interesting. But there’s something else to consider.
The people in the top 10 are the stars that the fans want to see. It would hurt the fans (and CE) to make them wait until the finals to see their favorite eater(s), who they, otherwise, only get to read about. And without the fans, there is no sport.
