It was an awesome spectacle to behold. I was on the side a line sitting next to Joe LaRue, Pat was ahead of Joey and Kobayashi up until the 4 minute mark and then somewhere deep within the tsunami arose a force that I have never seen. I was within feet of Kobayashi and he just started to inhale the Krystal whole, not to mention he had left one Angus till the very end. As he was about to put the Krystal in his mouth he was squishing them in small balls and in they went. I have not seen a blow out like that since his performance in 2001 in Nathan’s. It was truly a site to behold on Ross’s Landing in Chattanooga Tennessee.

I watched the event on my big screen TV at home. I want to comment on the one particular interview after the contest was over. That interview was with Joey Chestnut.

Joey is good but his arrogance as some say he has sure came across. Joey choked, plain and simple. He half heartedly congratulated Koby while at the same time blaming his defeat on the VERY DRY Angus Burgers.

What shocked me more was his looks. Dental hygiene surely is not one of his fortes. You would think with his winnings, topping close to half a million by now, that he might invest in some dental work. Most likely the oldest eater on the circuit now is The Hangman. He has perfect teeth. At least the false teeth that old man wears are perfect. The up close shot of Joey reminds me of the backwoods folks from the Appalachian mountain who are missing many teeth from all the moonshine, chewing tobacco and very poor dental hygiene. His comment about making the contest better next year by SERVING BEER, I’m sure made the sponsors of the family minded restaurant chain of Krystal’s sit up and take notice. Already they drop the dunking saying their customers do not do that at their restaurants. Talking about beer might have been tongue and cheek but saying that on National TV was the wrong time and place for that type of comment. Why not say McDonalds is better than Krystal’s? The sponsors would have been just as PO’ed at Joey and MLE as they are about his Krystal’s are better and easier to swallow with beer comment.

Koby won. In fact Koby wiped the floor with Joey. Koby had an empty mouth with a few seconds after they called time. Joey was still trying to stuff the last Big Angus burger in his mouth as the buzzer went off.

Joey was good. My only comment is this great All American boy, who wears the American Flag over his body after he wins the Coney Island Hot Dog Contest, should spend a few dollars on some dental work. Otherwise viewers may mistake him more for a backwoods redneck hillbilly instead of a College Grad from San Jose. The way he looked and talked during that interview, even Jeff Foxworthy would say Joey WAS NOT SMARTER than a fifth grader.

I wonder will Jammin Joe LaRue now be removed from his #33 ranking in IFOCE seeing he was reported as a former competetive eater during that sackful contest? His last contest years were 2006 and 2007. He only ate sweet corn one time in 2008 and 2009. So is it true that Jammin Joe Larue has quit the IFOCE or did they put this ringer in the sackful contest because he could no longer compete against the big boys in the KSO. If Joe was a ringer, then why not have Super Paul up there in the sackful. He should be Mad As He!! for all he has done and he cannot make it on TV.

Kobayashi is pound for pound the best non dunking eating champion to have ever lived. Enjoy him because there will never be another not even close. Freaks of nature like him come around once every thousand years and that’s if your lucky. I’d say Sonya is the female equivalent to him.

I was proud of Koby and the way he reminded all doubters that he is the Number One competitive eater in this galaxy!

In all the interviews I saw and read, with Bob, Tim, Joey, and Pat, there was virtually no mention of Koby, as if he had been written off as having no chance to win.

I don’t know that there will ever be another competitive eater like Takeru. The only critics he hasn’t silenced or changed the opinions of are the ones who don’t want to be honest with themselves.

I love you Takeru! You’re the best!

Sounds like Koby is back in full force. That’s good for CE. As for Moonshine Brother’s comments about Joey’s need for dental work, that’s your most significant takeaway from this event? Some guy needs braces? Really?

Let me guess, you probably watched the Super Bowl last year and after it was over, your most significant observation is that Troy Polamalu should do something about those split ends. You probably go to a Yankees game and rant all the way home about how Derek Jeter “has become really lax when it comes to skin care. I mean, I could see that pimple from the upper deck!”

You gotta wonder about guys who are that hung up on other guys’ personal appearances.

Congratulations to Kobayashi and we all should acknowledge that thanks for what he did years ago in Nathan’s doubling the previous record is why we have eating contests more popular and maybe not accepted but at least not as rejected as they used to be before. I was in my best shape ever when Guinness said no more eating records more than 20 years ago and thanks to what this guy did is that they even cared to re open cathegories for speed eating, Joey, Pat and all of them came after him when they saw that it could be done and they even improved what he did but I think Kobayashi is a pioneer of all this new era of competitive eating.

    1. Koby (In head-to-head contests against Joey in the past year, Koby has won three of four: Singapore/curry chicken, P’zone, and Krystals. Two of those three, including the most recent, were by large margins.)
    2. Joey (Joey has lost more contests this year than he has won —- great eater, but not # 1 material.)
    3. Pat (His performance at KSO VI kept me from placing Bob in front of him, at least for the time being.)
    4. Bob (Bob has topped everyone ranked above him except Koby, and has finished ahead of Joey in several foods.)
    5. Sonya (It’s difficult to separate Sonya and Tim. Tim is a better dunker, and had a blowout total at the Nathan’s finals, leaving Sonya in the dust. Sonya has finished ahead of Tim in three events in 2009: crawfish, oysters {Sonya won}, and Krystals. She won three additional events: Buffalo wings, buffet, and jalapenos, where she beat the jalapeno king, Deep Dish, himself. I can’t recall Tim winning a contest this year. I give a slight edge to Sonya.)
    6. Eater X
    7. Hall
    8. Erik Denmark
    9. Tim Brown
    10. Juliet Lee (She has three wins this year.)
    11. Eric Booker
    12. Jim Reeves
    13. Rich LeFevre (Inactivity hurts him; I hope all is well.)
    14. Ben Monson has enormous potential, and he could easily be in the top half dozen or so in another year.
    15. Legs
    16. Wing Kong (with a bullet!)
    17. Sean Gordon
    18. Pat from Moonachie (The lack of a killer instinct keeps him from winning and ranking higher.)
    19. Pretty Boy
    20. Nathan Biller
    21. Marco Marquez
    22. U. S. Male (He has fast hands at and away from the CE table.)
    23. Steakbellie
24 Arturo Rios (Lack of participation hurts him.)
    25. Russ Keeler

In my 35 years of Professional Wrestling I have held many Championship Belts. I know a little bit about what Joey Chestnut is facing. Being on top of the mountain is great but at any given time, someone can and will knock you down. Takeru Kobayashi came in and knocked Joey off the mountain. Now Takeru holds the KSO Championship Belt. Now the target is on Takeru’s back.

Congrats to Takeru Kobayashi and to all who made the finals table.

Joey was good. Now there is a poll asking his Joey washed up. I forsee Joey coming back better and stronger. You win some and you lose some. Back in Pro Wrestling, Ric Flair was billed as the 16 time World Champion. To be that he had to lose many times. Joey may have lost this one but there will be another, and another, and another. At 57 years of age I may be very well ending my time in CE while Joey is only 25 and has many more years in CE and many more chances to win again if he wants.

Wow Ben ranked 14 right out of the gate and after only 1 contest? That would be sweet, and I do agree I can see him ranked in the top 7 this time in 6 months from now (granted they update the ranking in 6 months)

I can also see a scenario where Sonya is ranked over Tim. She’s made great progress!

The Rhonda Evans rankings: almost as important as knowing who is the 13th ranked eater in the Worst League of Crappy Eaters.
The IFOCE rankings: The Top 15-20 sort of make sense, then it’s dartboard time
Juliet Lee’s new nickname: “The Messiest Hands in Competitive Eating”
If Eater X keeps up this pace, he’ll be Eater Z by next year

It would be great PR (“the former great regains the top spot”) and it would set up a nice showdown in Nathans next year (assuming this is the last rankings update we see until then).

Ron, I would hardly say Joey, with 81 points, and Pat, with 78 had a bad day (Tim neither), especially with nondunking rules. I’d say those two were very much in the zone, so to speak, no, those totals were phenomenal! Koby just happened to be unbeatable, and gave a Kobayashi-like performance —- witness July 4, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006.

Why so often must sporting or sports-like events be perceived as zero sum games? Great performances are great on their own merit, NOT because someone else’s game wasn’t up to par. If that were the case there would be no truly great performances.

He’s probably pointing to a groupie. After watching the video, I’m constantly amazed at how effortless and cool Pat Bertoletti makes competitive eating look while consuming such massive quantities of food. He doesn’t make it look disgusting or painful at all (I think we all know who that title goes to).

Interesting that Koby saved one Angus burger until the end. That was a smart strategy on his part. Knowing that it would take longer to eat 5 Krystals vs. eating one Angus, he knew that if he needed a quick 5 point boost in the last minute, that would be his secret weapon. Turns out, he didn’t even need the boost!

When did all the other eaters eat their Angus burgers? In the very beginning?

Pat was pointing at me in the VIP tent, when he saw that I had eaten my personal record 30th Krystal (all small ones) while watching the contest….of course, I had been there 2 hours, so not even I was impressed by my input. Later on the ride home, my wife and kids were very unimpressed by my output…and they kept the windows open.
Mega, most eaters throughout the qualifiers, and in the finals, kept a Big Angus for the end – for the exact reason you stated, to get that “five point jump”. We can all fit one of those things in our mouth, so it was a good idea.
One thing they really stressed at the Finals Eater’s meeting to slightly “screw up” this strategy was that even if it’s in your mouth at the end, it had to be finished in the next thirty seconds, or it wouldn’t count AT ALL….this is actually what happened to Juliet at her Qualifier. She had two small krystals stuffed in her face, but they were deducted when she couldn’t get them down in thirty seconds.
Some eaters in the finals saved more than one Big Angus, which explained some of the wild variations of totals throughout the contest. I felt slightly bad for the Bunettes – it made it tough to accurately display what the totals were – plus, the wind kept blowing the cards. At one point, I saw Jim Reeves total was at 137! – but, his great bunette ( the four-time bunette counter Ashley ) quickly fixed that, despite the breeze battling her. Too bad it was wrong, that would have been one heck of an upset!

I thought it was great of Krystals to enforce the rules fairly and be as strict as Pat says they were. It made the contests that much more legitimate. No cups half full of bun at the end and huge piles of detrius on the tables…..all of which makes Koby’s total that much more amazing.

Big difference if you ask me. Joey should stop being so cheap like Nathans and buy himself a new grill. I loved the way Sonya hugged him right after he won; she is not only the best female eater in the world, she is the only other person on this earth of the opposite gender on his level. We all know who hates and who doesn’t. 20,000 dollars to Takeru!! HAHAHAHA MLE should get with the program and let Takeru into the wind bowl! I remember how quick the IFOCE was to yank the # 1 ranking from Koby immediately after July 4, 2007 after he lost in OT to Joey, even though that was the first time Koby had ever been defeated. Up until that day, Koby had defeated Joey each time he ever faced him; some of those victories were routes.

There is no way on this earth that Koby should not be ranked # 1. Any argument about him not competing enough is “crapacious!” (Definition: having crap-like traits.) Either you’re the best eater or your not at any given snapshot in time —- now!

Last Sunday the man who put CE as we know it on the map took CE to an even higher level from its Joey Chestnut-era perch. Koby is a phenom’s phenom!

The eater who put competitive eating as we know it on the map took the Chestnut-era game to an even loftier plateau.

What better face for CE than a ripped, six-pack “abbed” man of small stature that is Kobayashi!? I mean, the man is an absolute eating machine. Lets see technology build a better one of those!

Perhaps some day before he retires he will move to the US, so we all can see this phenom’s phenom absolutely “tear it up!” His presence would draw large crowds and stimulate increased interest, which would result in higher purses/payouts, which, in turn, would benefit every eater in the sport.

The IFOCE needs to ride this thoroughbred, this Secretariat of CE!

Nic, if eaters are tied in all other factors (i.e. strength of competiton, head-to-head competition, winning margin, etc.), then number of events could certainly be used as a tie-breaker. But in this case, given Koby’s domination in the most recent major event, there’s clearly no need for a tie-breaker.

……. well if u look at it in terms of majors over the last few years… who is number 1 again? maybe the sheas should get connected with the WWE…. joey vs. koby cage match who is number 1.

Hey Rhonda, Al Bundy went upstairs and then by the time the toaster popped the bread, he was already coming back downstairs. Great analogy

If you play three games a year, while everyone else plays 25 or more – you can’t be champ…look at the golf rankings. Tiger had to earn his #1 rank, he may take some tournaments off, but he has to show up for at least enough to make it “fair”, and has to battle for the final tournament points race in the playoffs they have set up.

Hahaha i’d support the cage match idea! I think it’s not fair to give Koby #1 based on how he would have permormed in contest he didn’t show. However, one can’t expect a guy from Japan showing up in as many contests as others do. Now that he has regained his krystal title, it’s a good time for him to show up in some other contests, maybe someone with +5000$ first place cash or one where the sponsor accepts to pay him an appearance fee just to make sure he can cover travel expenses. You get the idea.

Don’t bother talking about Koby being ranked #1. The Sheas wont do it because it sounds better to have the #1 eater at more contests. It is marketing and money. If a sponsor hears they can have the #2 eater, they wonder why they can’t have #1. It would cost the Sheas too much to have Koby available.

Not to take anything away from the rest of the eaters, I have a lot of respect for them, but I think Koby is better.

Gastro/North Pole …….. Using that logic, Koby should have never been ranked # 1 in the world at any time. He just didn’t eat in enough contests. That title should have gone to someone like Booker, Jarvis, Lerman, and Hardy back in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Look at all the contests they ate in. On those grounds, Wild Bill eats at more events than practically anyone. By all rights he should be ranked Number One in the world. You guys are whacko.

Anony – I think Koby should be ranked #1. Like I said, “…I think Koby is better.” I was just giving an opinion on why he might not get that ranking when they come out.
Koby was 3-1 against Joey this year. Joey also got beat at other contests as well, he won 7 and was 2nd in six and 3rd in one. It is not as clear as when Koby would win everything, but it should be Koby at #1.

anony 5:05: I remember that toaster scene. Hillarious! Al would probably say he gave Peg the best 30 seconds she ever had. I loved that show!

Koby is the best eater out there to me, i’ve stated it here before. That doesn’t mean that i think he should be ranked #1 though. I also think that taking part in, and even winning, a lot of contest doesn’t mean you should be ranked #1 by itself. However, the eaters have changed over time, and so should do the accomplishments you need to do to move up in the rankings.

Looks like Nathan’s alone determines who’s number 1. That sucks. Joey not only lost three of four contests to Koby in the last year, going back to late summer or fall 2008, Joey finished behind Pat and Bob on several occasions. If you wait for Koby to lose to Pat or Bob, you’ll wait a long, long time. That shit aint happ’nin!

In a way I can understand a tie between Pat and Bob, but in a way I can’t. Pat decisively finished ahead of Bob in both majors. Yet, Bob does have the most momentyum of any eater.

Overall, I think the IFOCE did a fair job in the new rankings. But the best eater in the world is not number 1.
