Laredo Morning Times on jalapeno contest
The Laredo Morning Times has an article about last night’s jalapeno contest. The top 3:
1. Pat Bertoletti, 266 peppers, 15 minutes, new contest record
2. Sonya Thomas, 170 peppers
3. Erik Denmark, 147 peppers
The previous record was 141 in 15 minutes, set in 1991 by Braulio Martinez
The article reports that competitors were banned from drinking beers during the contest, but Pat Bertoletti drank a beer in “about a second” after he was announced as the winner.
Erik the Red has a blog entry about his contest participation and made the cover of the Laredo Times entertainment section.
Sonya has a contest report on her news page.
The IFOCE contest report does not mention Sonya by name; the runner up is listed as “Major League Eating’s top female eater”.
IFOCE’s press release to promote the contest called for a jalapeno eating contest between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to decide the Democratic nomination.

Rubbergut is the top female eater so maybe it was she that was in the contest. Otherwise the I.F.O.C.E. would have nentioned Sonya by name. Congratulations Elizabeth!

Anytime people get beaten by a hundered or so pieces of food, its time for them to retire and we have two logical candidates here.

Don Lerman you might as well take your jalapeno records off your website and either hock your jalapenos trophy’s or thrown them in the nearest incinerator. Pat just crushed them all

The question on everyones mind is who got the Laredo morning times new story first, mosesnews or eatfeats. Honestly do you run to donmoseslerman.com for up to the minute news and contest results or is it copied and pasted by Lerman himself off the internet after its posted on eatfeats? Lets start a poll.

DON MOSES LERMAN is the greatest jalapeno eater who ever lived. Had he been able to travel and participate, he would have eaten over 300 peppers. Sonya and Erik are not worthy to even eat in a food that DON MOSES LERMAN has participated in. Nuff Said!

Please find a female only tournament for sonya. I hate seeing her get her ass kicked time after time after time again. Its pathetic and boring. I have an idea. Lets trade her to the aice for elizabeth. Now, there, you will have a real competitor. But they will probably not go for it since liz is a much, much better eater.

Sonya can beat any AICE eater, male or female. Elizabeth is very good, but Sonya is still EASILY the best female eater in the world. Juliet Lee vs Elizabeth would be a tighter contest – check out the Krystal results from last season.

anonymous i would welcome a sonya for rubbergut trade but i assume ifoce will want a few more of our eaters to sweeten the pot. How bout i throw in a thriving hot prospect like Jill Stoler and an eater to be named later

You are crazy. Sonya has gotten much worse over the last two years. She is maybe the 5th or 6th best female eater in the world. That’s it!@

Look, believe it or not I respect Sonya’a ability, but she really has deteriorated the last 5 years. However, she is still a very quality eater and would probably hold her own against some of the mid tier A.I.C.E members like Coon Dog or Chow Hound. She is not even close to Hickman, Goose, or Joe, however. They would bury her.

You wish. OKarma, Chapman, Hickman, Goose, and Menchetti would mop the damned floor up with her and spit her ass out!

the key to eating these is getting past the pain and torture of the heat which engulfs the entire mouth. Once you get past that its like eating sunflower seeds.

Whn the rankings change again, she’ll still be in the top 20, I suppose, but most of those in the top 20 in MLE can beat her. I expect to see her retire in the next year or two because her talent is just about all used up. Shes a has been. Cookie, Booker, Brian, Kevin, DML, and all that retired before her can all kick her to the curb and thats where she belongs.

Yes – Sonya took second and she did one hell of a job. The three of them all beat the previous world record and let me tell you – those were some big peppers and they were pickled, so you soaked up a lot of vinegar. I was humbled at only 55 peppers, but I didn’t bring any milk, the only provided water, and if I kept stuffing in that brine, Elvis was going to leave the building.
Here’s a picture of me and Sonya from after the event.

Pat, I’m trying to figure out how in the world your stomach can handle all of those peppers. They must really take their toll on you. I would suspect much the same, but to a much lesser degree, for the eater who comes in last. You are really something special in peppers, Pat, I’ve got to hand it to you.
Sonya, Erik, totally ignore those moronic comments that people leave, especially those who have not the gonads to leave their name. I heard that ususlly the pepper used in that particular event are large and extremely hot. Anytime somebody can eat over 100 of those, well, that’s special. You two both broke the 17-year-old record. Anybody who would seek to find something negative in that needs help, and I mean FAST! I
Other than Rich LeFevre, who I am surprised didn’t attend, I doubt any other eater could have eaten as many as either of you two, let alone Pat. My Lord!

Pat averaged a pepper about every three and a half seconds. For Sonya that’s a pepper every 5 seconds and change, and one every 6 seconds for ETR. Fifteen minutes is a long time to eat pickled jalapeno peppers.

Nice work Pat, Sonya, and Erik! I do love the peppers myself and I know how much it burns afterwards. It takes a special kind of eater to participate in jalapeños!
Who else was there from the MLE? Was it really 15 minutes!?!? That is a LONG time! That just gives you more time to feel the burn. I am sure you had 90% of your total eaten in the first half of the contest. Hope all is well. :oO

http://www.competitiveeating.net/newsarchive.php?action=detail&sn=51 This is what CEN wastes their time with. Making up stories that IFOCE headquarters is flooded with hate calls and emails in regard to Bison’s pepper prediction. Instead of mentioning Seiken’s upcoming CD, this is the shit they preoccupy themselves with . I hope that entire album disses them all.
