Largest crowds in competitive eating history
To have a World Series related post, I looked up the attendance for the July 12, 1977 Philadelphia Philles game during which Lynda Kuerth set a Guinness bunless hot dog eating record to compare with other listed CE attendance figures. Ms. Kuerth’s mark of 23 frankfurters in 3 minutes and 10 seconds was listed in the Guiness Book of World Records until at least 1988. Retrosheet lists the attendance of the 5-4 Phillies victory over the St. Louis Cardinals as 32,618. (Interestingly, the game only took 2:07 despite 9 runs, 18 hits, 10 walks and 7 stolen base attempts)
Other competitive eating attendances:
- GJoe says that the hot dog eating contest held during the 2005 Fiesta Bowl had the largest crowd in competitive eating history. The attendance figure for that game was 73,519
- Police reported that the attendance figure for the 2007 Nathan’s finals is 50,000
- 35,000 attended this year’s Nathan’s finals according to the NYPD (Gersh Kuntzman says the actual attendance was closer to 5,000)
- Wing Bowl attendance before tickets were required was listed as 24,000 – 25,000 at least that many were turned away from the 2005 Wing Bowl
In other Phillies related news, I can attest that “The Truth Hurts”, who posted anti-Philadelphia comments in another thread, is not Brian Seiken, who has not engaged in pro sports smack talk on his website or this blog as f

I’m a realist. I was rooting for Tampa, but they’re done. Philly has more experience, and now they’re confident, and I would not be surprised if the series ends tonight.
Philly pitching has shut down Tampa’s # 3 and 4 lineup hitters. What is it now between the two of them, 0 for 26 or something like that? And half of those have been strike outs. You can’t win a series like that.
I’ll say it now: Congratulations Philly!

Enjoy your tailgater US! The Phillies may well win it all tonight. They have their ace going. Nevertheless, the Rays’ turnaround is Cinderella-like, and they deserve lots of credit. I think the average age of the team is something like 24 or 25, so they may return again soon.

USMail, my god shut up. You really need a lesson in humility, it’s great for the city (of which you don’t even live) that they are winning. But do you have to act like a typical Philly fan. What should I expect from a town of fans that never win a damn thing, it’s just sad, but expected. Someday you will learn how to act, but then again it’ll be another 15 years before we hear from another Philly team, so you probably won’t. You are the reason people hate that city and there teams.

anonymous, though I’m flattered—-I even got a little tingling sensation under my dress—-that some folks voted me for commissioner, I’m afraid when all was said and done I would lose my job after about two contests.
For starters, I’d make that 5-second rule a 1-second rule, unless I could eliminate dunking altogether. That would mean a quick in-and-out dunk in a beverage, not to exceed one second, and I’d use a Yellow warning flag one time and follow-up with a DQ the second time.
Also, eaters would not be allowed to go to the next tray, plate, or what have you until my judges were convinced that all food had been cleaned/eaten from the first one.
I’d also default to weighing as the chosen method of measurement, whenever I could. Pizza, burritos, kolaches … no dunking. And this mess about raising your hands when you’ve finished a particular item of food in a contest of multiple foods (like at the Buffalo Buffet this year) would come to an ABRUPT halt. The rules they used at the buffet in Buffalo were ridiculous.
Right now some of the eaters have little or no respect for the judging, because it is not uniformly applied to all eaters in all contests, or because the rules are simply not enforced. Once eaters perceive the judges aren’t joking, the cheating and smoke-and-mirror bending of the rules would cease. It would only take one or two DQs.
But like I said, after two contests I’d be given my walking papers, because I would take CE much more seriously than those who run the show. And not to do so is unfair both to the “sport” and those eaters who give it their all.
Okay, go ahead and blast me!

Ya know, since i have frequented this site over the years i have been horrified in realizing that there are a lot of two faced backstabbers in your own backyard. When i say that i mean actual members of an organization you have put alot of trust into. I should have realized that when you are dealing with ‘”food” dont expect much as far as quality of character. Some of you are greedy pigs that were never able to fill yourself with enough food during childhood so you take your frustrations out in here. This does not apply to all , for there are some good people i have met which i still consider as class acts. The ones that post under names such as “north pole” “uncle fudge” , Beyond IFOCE, Luther, anony 1, 2, 3, 4 etc etc ” are nothing more than assinine asswipes that take pleasure in sneaking in unintelligent hateful remarks about me so that everyone can view these comments and make their determination as to whether they have any validity to them . In other words its a low level smear campaign orchestrated by a bunch of dimwits that have nothing better to do or nothing going on in their lives . I feel sorry for the ones that gave birth to you sad fuckers because you are nothing and will never amount to anything in society with the possible exception of mopping floors or making it as a towel boy in a whore house I’m out !

I agree whole heartedly you often bring something worthwhile to the table, but it’s over shadowed by obnoxious interviews with the likes of Brad, and his childish little rants over Pete. When you align yourself with that caliper of person you degrade the honest content you are capable of supplying. Honestly when will you stop letting people bait you into these sophomoric rebuttals on this site, if Don Lerman can stop being baited or at least know when to step away and not continue to tarnish the name they have made for themselves then why can’t you? It seems sad that the “Pickle Champion†become another Dale Boone. And since you only have a few days left, maybe you could get one of those blogs and start over fresh, you know turn over a new leaf. Rhonda, weighing is almost always more problematic than the counting of units, excpet for when dealing with wings and ribs. If you knew anything about competitive eating beyond the superficial, you would understand that much. When you weigh something, several areas for mistakes open up: the debris on the floor, on the table, and the eaters, none of which is ever cleaned up perfectly or equally; volunteers’ confusing the trays of eaters; scale errors, which can occur in several forms, and do occur some form at every contest; and many different kinds of math errors on the part of those weighing and calculating the final totals.

I see the peanut gallery has chimmed in again. How dare you assume that Don Juan is not my name, Donald Juan is my name (parents were hippies), and just because you don’t know of me doesn’t mean I hide behind anything. I have been an enormous fan of CE for years, mostly as an observer but have got my feet wet on occation. Probably the same number of contests as you but probably better results. But I can’t help notice your typical “try my best” speech when you are challenged or cornered, I am sure we will soon follow with your typical I’m a jerk off and you will kick my ass if you meet me. But the truth is you and Brian are sub par windbags with nothing to back it up with but idol threats. I am sure our paths will cross again as they have in the past, that is if you didn’t bite the hand that feeds you. As you ruined the only chance you have of placing anywhere, by bitching about the judging. It will be fun to see how really do with out the backing of the sponsor. And I will be there to watch (wings aren’t my thing). Top 12 in the second round? Only because you cried like a baby.

Two rules that I want to put out there:
1. What is in your mouth at the end of a contest should still count, but you shouldn’t be allowed to put your hands over your face after the buzzer. Your hands are not an extension of your mouth.
2. The DQ for a reversal has never made sense to me. I don’t think you should be disqualified, I just think you should stop with however many you had when you threw up. If you think about it, the way it is now is encouraging people in qualifiers to do the “bare minimum of what it takes to win, so as not to risk reversing. Can one of the people who has been here awhile explain this to me?

Mr Juan you apparantly have me confused with another competitive eater for i have never threatened to kick the ass of anyone in competitve eating.I might have used the term “say it to my face” once or twice but if thats what you call a threat then i will be careful to watch my language when i am in your presence . Geez! I was taught at a young age never to underestimate anyone’s physical ability. I dont randomly approach an individual “im gonna kick your ass” Thats JHS shit. Matter of fact many of the IFOCE members are bigger and taller than i. I will never back down from a challenge but on the flip side i wont provoke one either. Just because someone weighs 110 lbs doesnt mean that they cant whip me. I’ll bet you Sonya and Juliet have some moves that noone even knows about. Same applies to Brad or any of the other thinner eaters. How do you like that? Mr Juan if you can find one post where i have threatened or called someone out physically , then i owe you a soda ok? It appears that you have nothing better to do so why dont you go through the eatfeats archives of the past three four years and see what you can come up with. This is senseless and pointless . I dont know why i waste my time with this crap

Don Juan, when you talk about Brian aligning himself with what you consider rebellious badboys of the sport, such as Toro and Brad , have you ever thought he did it so people can enjoy it? John F. Kennedy hung around guys like Frank Sinatra just so he could get women and maybe a few extra votes. When you wake up and smell the coffee it’s about what they can do for him publicity wise . I think he knew that if they were bad for his business he wouldnt bother with them in the first place.

I normally dont provide input on team sports through my website or any other vehicle for that matter because i dont follow sports as much as i used to. I virtually stopped paying attention to WS playoffs superbowls etc etc for quite some time. It’s been close to 17yrs that i lost interest in baseball for personal reasons. I was a die hard Met fan since 1968 and i followed other teams as well . I remember when they instituted divisional play in 1969 which just happened to be the year the Mets won the world series. I know quite abit about the Phila Phillies. In the late 60’s they had some pretty weak teams. For those that go back that far the only big names that brought the crowds to Connie Mack Stadium was slugging outfielder Richie Allen and pitcher Rick Wise. Richie Allen was their only legit power hitter. I remember watching a Mets Phillies twi night doublheader in 1968 and they refused to start the game until they were able to locate the whereabouts of Richie Allen. It turned out to be longer than a rain delay. Bob Skinner (the manager) was fit to be tied. Back then ballplayers could get away with moves like that. They would never permit something like that in this day and age. When they found out he was at the racetrack it was like basically telling the Phillies to go f– themselves and he calls the shots. They suspended him and two years later traded him. He was Mr Philadelphia back then. Phillies had some weak teams in the 70’s but during the late 70’s and early 80’s they became a powerhouse with Luzinski, Schmidt Bowa Maddux and Carlton. I thought the best team they ever put on the field was the 1980 and 83 teams but did deserve to win it all in 1980.The Orioles were tough in 83 . Philly fans really suffered through hell during the 90’s and even into the millenium. After 28yrs they finally did it . Phila freedom at last . Congrag to all of Philly and their fans.
