I am going to refrain from going on an anti hippie rant right now.

I like the fact that the WP goes all opinion when it comes to eating competitions, then when someone disagrees with their opinion they remove the comments. So much for free speech!

Honestly, I think it is best to ignore the usual children starving stuff. It will never go away so saying that so and so donates to food pantries etc., that CE is entertainment going back to fairs, that the INDY races waste gas, why bother trying to argue with people who have already made up their minds about things. Let them say what they say pulling out the obesity epidemic. No one is forcing people to smoke or to be overweight to obese. And most eaters are in better shape than the larger population.

Good restraint Dax because it isn’t only some sub-group set like so called hippies who are anti. Peta, Vegans, who knows, likely there is a union of caged chickens who are horrified by Wing eating contests. Let them throw words and just keep eating. Does anyone think that those newspapers are not going to cover events and the eaters, ban those articles? Answer is no.

This is my response to the person who wrote the article in the Washington Post criticizing eating challenges and CE.
I am a competitive eater. I take this article written as someone who does not understand competitive eating. For example, my girl friend has MS. I raised almost $3000 dollars for the National MS Society last 1/2011, I ate as much pizza as I could with another competitive eater. Helping people in the US is more critical than world hunger right now. Furthermore, there are many companies who have competitive eating contests to raise money for their favorite charities. In the future, you may want to do your due diligence before writing such offensive articles on topics you really don’t know much about.

Hmm have you ever stopped to listen to yourself? How do you know most eaters are in better shape than the larger population? What you see on the outside is not necessarilywhat you see on the inside. Also what gives you the authority to pass judgement on animal rights advocates. You seem to think you know it all when in truth you know very little

Once the eating challenges stop, the starving will become nourished. Simple fix.

It’s a sad day in journalism when there are so many alternative opinions to this stupid, non informed article and the Washington Post has no interest in hearing opposing views. Thanks OJ for allowing another point of view. I believe that many here wrote an opposition piece (oped) yet the WP was too scared to allow it. Hey Washington Post, I dare you to allow Rhonda Evans, Hmm, or Joe Menchetti, Joel, etc. to respond. The reason I include those names is that I hope someone on the Post’s staff has the sense of Googling what is being said about your publication. Where’s the Post’s opposition to boxing? They’re beloved Redskins? The Capitals? Don’t those organizations all support violence, using your publication’s logic? Competitive eating?World Hunger — GIVE ME A BREAK!

I dont see the correlation between world hunger and comp eating. What does eating 60 hot dogs have to do with people starving? Its not like the food is being wasted or tossed in the garbage can. However i can see their point if they made a strong stance over the slaughter of animals for human consumption

I have been very patient with you insular buffoons … Over 3 years it’s been–and I have chosen not to defend myself, because you-all wouldn’t have written in had you not known what the rest of the world thinks about you. Competitive eating?! Even for a cause? And who cares if there’s no direct correlation (the final word is not in) with world hunger? You’re still in the same leaugue as the Romans, who ate until they threw up, so that they could feast again.
(I apologize to the one or two of you who defended me).
I was only born in Austria because my father was a CIA agent, you twit!! My father was born in New jersey, and my mother can trace her ancestry back to the mayflower (or one of the subsequent ships–who cares which?).
Technically I’m as American as apple-pie, and Jewish to boot. So take your Hitler comment and stuff it.
Hope you don’t need a dictionary to decode this,

You realize your statment makes no logical sense given that no one posted a comment to this thread after the day it was posted. Therefore, you either lied, or are very stupid. Either way, one now has reason to discount your posts.

Nadia, you ignorant slut! How come it took you three years to respond to what has long been a dead subject. Your original article could have been more intelligently written by the average third grader. You must really be the butt of a lot of jokes from REAL journalists.

CE was absolutely fascinating when WP profiled Juliet Lee and Sonya Thomas, with online chats also. I guess it this horrible stuff was different way back then when all those poor people were not starving. Probably before you got into hack journalism. Can you find an easier softball? What’s next, sharks are so hungry that they eat people? We should be nice to sharks because they’re somehow related to us?

Do a little research, instead of pandering to the lowest common denominator. Many of us have dealt with the world’s greatest “reporters” and crack “journalists” for longer than you’ve been “enlightening” people. This is an old, tired rant. Once again, do a little research. Maybe find another rant. Remaining food is available for fans, event workers, and the homeless. I know this because it see it on a regular basis. Nothing is wasted, and the only thing hurt is your “Ain’t it so awful?” attitude. “Unoriginal?”

Nice job. “Unoriginal” pretty much. My next stupid rant goes something like this… “Moco self-entitled deprives Asian women of job opportunities to make herself feel better about living in $1M home.”

Ill tell you what’s truly pitiful. Watching Joey Matt and Miki walking away with large cardboard awards after each contest while the other saps that compete smile with them take pics etc, while gas tolls come out of your pocket. Oh wait i just do it for fun. There are other things you can do for fun
