The blog for Dr. Jon of the Heart Attack Grill announces that Miki Sudo's appearance on Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy where she ate the Octuple Bypass Burger in 3:22 will be televised on the History Channel in May. If you can't wait until next month, Miki has posted a training video where she eats 24 hot dogs in 4:15.

very impressive. Keep up the great work Miki because you will do very well in MLE. Your time may have been a little better if you didn’t keep fumbling with your sleeves or wiping your mouth. Gotta love a girl that can inhale double dogs like that.

Anonymous 1055: That’s a good question, and it will probably depend on a couple of things:
1. When the rankings are released, and
2. Additional performances in contests prior to release.
All other things being equal, if MLE were to adjust rankings right now, I would look for Jeff Butler to debut at about #10-11 and Miki Sudo at about #7.
Miki’s performance in asparagus this weekend will shed a bit more light. I look for Joey to be Joey and win easily, with Matt finishing a strong second. Miki will do well, no doubt, but men have a distinct advantage in jaw strength (which will come into play in this contest), so I doubt she will finish higher than third, which will still be remarkable.

I cannot take credit for discovering anyone . I am just gave advice and made suggestions to some people. Met Sonya at Molly Pitcher in 2003 after her first Nathans qualifier. I spoke to her in length that day. I dont think she had any intention of making it a career . She was excited to get to the finals in Coney and her initial indications led me to believe she had little interest to continue. History proved wrong. Brian Subich gave me full credit in helping him join IFOCE. He was crossed between aice and ifoce and i suggested the wiser choice. To this day he still thanks me for helping him make the right choice. Adam da Bomb Leffler was another story. Always one bad apple in a good bunch I thought he had unlimited potential. 6’5 good looking great personality big strong guy turned out to be a big bust. Torres? I dont want to get into that one cause it will fuel the haters . With Miki, i think we should give El Toro credit on that one. I just advised her and made some suggestions. I told George Shea it would be in IFOCE best interests to sign her immediately. I still communicate with her from time to time. Very smart intelligent young lady and has every intention of making CE a career without intentionally stepping on anyone toes

In all fairness you cannot knock anyone out of the top 8 unless she first beats them head to head . I doubt she will be ranked right away. A few contests will tell the story. She did demolish Denmark, Butler, Beast and Michelle which was no easy task . In just one contest she proved herself and then some

After viewing the video i notice she has some kind of unique way of eating the hot dogs. Almost like a Japanese ritual the way she moves her hands and then presses them against her lips. Uncanny!

TBW is not used to being pushed. She will fold like a house of cards. When Miki wins Seiken, Dax and Toro win also and 10,000 split 4 ways comes to a whopping 2,500 apiece and that’s a nice payday for all involved in Miki’s success.

The Black Widow may actually practice if she thinks that Miki could have the slightest possibility to catch her. This is a first for her. Sonya is the most gracious in print and at the table a fierce competitor, bar none. Miki appears to be in the same mold in character regarding Sonya and CE. Gracious and with due respect. This should be very interesting. Certainly far more interesting than the men’s. No one has ever been able to come close to catching Joey. I think Janus and Bertoletti has finished 2nd but their numbers were also not even close. Live for the women I say! ESPN listens to no one except $ but hopefully the Sheas can talk up the women this year and give more balanced coverage for the sexes.

April 26, 2013 @ 8:55 am
Bertoletti is done with competitive eating. He has nothing more to prove. His magic potion he puts in the lemonade to cheat his way towards more capaicity has run dry

If the women’s division is half as competitive as expected, it could be the biggest shot in the arm CE has had since Kobayashi broke the 50 HDB-barrier, July 4, 2001.
The aforementioned event put CE on the map; the 2013 women’s division this Independence Day should entice people to program it into their GPSs.
anonymous said
April 26, 2013 @ 9:39 am
The reason why woman division is not getting TV exposure with ESPN Is because TBW name is just not as big as Joey Chestnut or they might feel her competition is just not worth investing in air time. Maybe Miki will make them change their mind. It will take time before she becomes a household name. 40 hot dogs on first shot? Statement etched in stone right there

ESPN/ABC/Disney ought to substitute the July 4 episode of “The View” (which will probably be a rerun) with the Nathan’s women’s contest.

9:39: As a female competitive eater, there has never been a bigger name than TBW. But CE is not “lady-like” and it is accepted even less as a “sport’ for the women than for the men.
Furthermore, even today, Joey is recognized far, far less than Kobayashi. Koby is a legend. Joey is a great eater, but a legend he is not. Apart from those two, it is my contention that Sonya “The Black Widow’ Thomas is the third most recognized competitive eater on the plan—-period, and she is THE one-and-only female legend.
Though Sonya is the female equivalent of Koby, unlike the old Virginia Slims cigarette commercial, the women have yet to “come a long way baby,” in the world of competitive eating.
Miki won’t change that, nor will an Amazonian freak of nature who qualifies with 100 HDBs—-only time will, and lots of it. But even then, about 95% of the the public absolutely abhor CE. They view it as gross, despicable, deplorable, apathetic, and totally irresponsible.
That’s the nature of the beast.

Sheas live in a dream world thinking competitive eating ever had potential in becoming a real sport. I think they even know that the so called sport they are promoting is not and never will be deemed by society as a real sport. I don’t like putting down the Woman division in Coney , but to be quite honest it’s virtually no different than the March 23 qualifier at Coney. A female eater can qualify with 5 or 6 hot dogs considering the plethora of qualifiers on the circuit. Would not surprise me if a few of the better female eaters that competed in the last 2yrs decided to drop out

With all that said (see my 10;59 comment), even with less than 5% of the population expressing an interest in CE, that’s still a lot of people. It’s a big, big world, one in which global reach increases every day, given advances in information-sharing technologies.
So, I don’t mean CE is dead, nor will it ever die. It won’t. Interest will continue to grow with the growing population.
My point is that you can’t expect it to be on a level playing field / accepted by mainstream America or the world’s population as an accepted pastime. But it doesn’t have to be to be successful. And, whatever level of success that may be, women will always be looked upon as the inferior gender. But, there’s nothing abnormal about that. It’s that way with any legitimate “sport” or other form of entertainment.

Rhonda go to a baseball or basketball game and then attend a competitive eating contest and observe the facial expressions of fans. The fans that attend ballgames are cheering but at the same serious. Fans at competitive eating are smiling and laughing. Tells it all

Rhonda nails it all as usual. There will never be so called equality, that is just the way it is. She is also 100% spot on about the most recognized names in competitive eating. They are Kobayashi and to a lesser extent the correct name of Sonya. Joey, all the rest, all of them, will never have the profile that Kobayashi achieved. Sonya may sometimes be called that tiny Asian girl or other silly things but they always refer to Sonya. Sonya TBW and Kobayashi, that is it. No matter what Miki can do, it will not be huge except to the less than 5% who love following or participating in CE. And there are plenty of those.

Care to change your views now that Joey did 73.5 HDB last year?
“Miki won’t change that, nor will an Amazonian freak of nature who qualifies with 100 HDBs—-only time will, and lots of it. But even then, about 95% of the the public absolutely abhor CE. They view it as gross, despicable, deplorable, apathetic, and totally irresponsible.”
I think among men, it is popular. Look at all the minor contests around the US held in bars. Look at Wing Bowl. I’d revise your percentage to around 50%.

Dunno who Rhonda Evans is but I think that quote is still true today. Joey has never doubled the world record from the previous year. Kobayashi did it in his first try at Coney. Kobayashi’s performance elevated CE from subterranean levels.
