Most IFOCE / MLE victories in a calendar year
The MLE facebook announces that Pat Bertoletti was victorious in 18 MLE contests in 2011. (This apparently counts a victory over a team of amateurs in a pepperoni slice eating contest.) If you count every round of the US Open of Competitive eating as an individual contest, then Sonya Thomas exceeded that mark with 19 victories in 2005. A list of everyone with 10 or more victories in IFOCE/MLE contests in a calendar year according to the eatfeats database follows after the jump.
The second column is number of victories, the third is total number of contests and the fourth is total money won during the year.

I go with Pat just because of his impressive wine drinking. That sealed the deal for me. Sonya could not do that.

I think MLE would be correct in terms of MLE-sanctioned “events,” as the US Open of CE was a single event, but with multiple contests in each round, except for the final one between Sonya and Koby, which is the only contest within that event that Sonya lost. So OJ I agree with you.
Given the advanced level of competition since 2005, those days of any female achieving the most victories are long gone. Sonya was a one-time exception and I doubt anyone in this generation (mine anyway) will witness such a female juggernaut in CE ever again (with the possible exception of Suzanne French … pardon me, Dale).
As far as # of contests, I never realized that Rich LeFevre participated in so many in 2005—-27, which tied Pat’s 2006 total.
Thanks, as always, for the timeliness and thoroughness of that information / research OJ! (You’re a DATA juggernaut!)

I don’t think it’s a glitch in the data. But according to OJ’s hard work, what’s the only year since 2004 that no eater hit the 10 win mark. And, the answer is: 2009. I wonder what accounts for that? Fewer contests I guess. But, I wonder if anyone else has any other explanation?

Perhaps a more level playing field among Joey, Pat, and Bob?
