New Poll: 2007 IFOCE rookie of the year
Liz reports that Arturo Rios, Jr. was named the 2007 IFOCE rookie of the year. The new poll asks who you believe should have been awarded that honor. I am defining 2007 rookie as someone who first entered an IFOCE contest in 2006.

I think Arturo, Juliet, and Seaver were all deserving candidates. I would not have wanted to have the responsibility to decide since they are all so good. I also think Erik “The Red” deserves to have been nominated either last year or this year.

I dont understand what do you mean Liz reports? If you watch BB Nathans wrap up video the rookie of the year ceremony shows Ryan giving the trophy to Arturo . He should get it. He qualified for Nathan, Krystal, 3rd place in Thanksgiving invitational and won a pigs feet title. What more does he need to win it?

I THINK ARTURO RIOS IS A GREAT PERSON .I BELEIVE JULIET LEE HAS BEEN IN MORE CONTEST IN THE LAST YEAR .SHE’S PLACE BET THEN MOST OF THE TOP TEN EATERS BEA0TING SOME GREAT EATERS.THIS WAS A MISTAKE .THE ONLY THING THAT SHE HASN’T DONE IS WIN A TITLE. BUT ONE WIN AGAINST A SMALL CLASS OF LOWER RANKED EATERS SHOULEN’T BE THE SAME AS LOTS OF 2ND TO FIFTH PLACE FINISHES.HAY THERE WAS MANY EATERS IN MY TIME FRAME AT THE TOP FOR A LONG TIME BECAUSE THE CAME IN 2ND TO FIFTH ALL THE TIME.

The title says alot, but this is a hard one between Juliet and Arturo to me because the only two events they competed against each other in, Juliet beat Arturo in both, and all their other events had a different field of competition. I wonder how Juliet would have done in the pig’s feet. Also, the rankings show Juliet above Arturo by three spots. They are both amazing for their rookie year. I would give Juliet the award.

Arturo deserved it. Who else has a title?

I think Denmark was nominated. Seaver wasn’t, was he? He wasn’t at Coney Island this year to have received the award if he’d won. I think you have to be there to be a nominee.

OJ, That anonymous post comparing Arturo and Juliet was mine. Didn’t remember to fill out the form.
Hey Liz, where did you see that Arturo was named Rookie of the year? I couldn’t find it at any of the IFOCE sites.

Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti should have been rookie of the year to be honest.

I saw it happen! http://flickr.com/photos/68861983@N00/731391824/in/set-72157600669701751/ Along with Brian, as he says. This year, Tim Brown, Juliet, and Arturo were up. Last year it was Hall, Chip, and Joey (the winner).

Carey he received the trophy at the Nathan’s Finals. It’d be nice if the IFOCE recognized it on one of their five sites. But I guess they figure that the only thing that day worth mentioning was Joey’s win. Typical.

Thank you all for not calling me an idiot, but I will take the opportunity to do it myself. I didn’t think about that award presentation before Nathan’s when reading the post, and just didn’t put two and two together. I think it was the “Liz reports that Arturo Rios, Jr. was named the 2007 IFOCE rookie of the year” bit that threw me off. I didn’t get much sleep last night.

Go Rhonda! Go Rhonda! I love it when you get all wound up. Seriously, you often say what most other eaters are thinking, but are afraid to say. Yeah, seriously how does something like a Rookie of the Year award go unannounced?
My two cents…Rios gets the ROY title by a Krystal burger (his impressive showing on the Krystal circuit may have put him over the edge…Juliet sat out the ’06 Krystals).

Over 130 people hit the Nathans wrap up page on my site . You mean to tell me out of all of those people not one of you saw the video segment on the show where Ryan is handing the rookie of the year trophy to Arturo? Liz was a few feet from me when they made the presentation as i was videotaping it. This was July 4th why are we discussing this on July 16th?

Thanks MM. It’s easier for me to say these things because I have no vested/financial interest in any eating organization, but you and many other eaters do. So, if through me, I can vent concerns of those eaters who feel the same, so be it.
I again want to correct myself and go on record to say that many of my remarks about Joey Chestnut have been unfairly biased against him. I am big enough to freely admit that. Though he is not one of my favorite eaters, he is the greatest talent in the U.S right now.
What jerks my chain is that since the conclusion of the Nathan’s Finals (actually, since his qualifier this year), ALL the IFOCE focus is on Joey at the expense of everyone else. He would not be what he is, nor would the IFOCE be where they are now (wherever that is) without all of the other eaters to compare Joey to, to include the “table enders.”
Since July 4th at 1:00 PM, do other eaters in the IFOCE even exist? Here’s what I’m alluding to:
1. At least five eaters (on July 4th) set personal bests!
2. Rios was Rookie of the Year!
3, Sonya (a little tiny female) not only advanced the female world record (on July 4th), but only four male eaters in the entire world have ever consumed more hot dogs than her at a Nathan’s Finals in the history of the contest! And she doesn’t even like hot dogs.
4. Tim Janus ate well over 40 dogs and Pat B ate damn neat 50, but you would never know either of them were even in the contest!
5. Rich and Eric came in second and third to Joey at the recent rib event and it’s as if they did not even show up.
None of the folks mentioned above, to the best of my knowledge, have received an iota of recognition on the IFOCE Web site, and they have five of them.
As a matter of fact, I read an Internet article that put Sonya down for her “less than great” effort on July 4th for “only” consuming 39 HDBs.
Is this Joey’s fault or can anyone blame him? Absolutely not! He’s great, no doubt.
Does failure to acknowledge the efforts of others heartening performances who give their all day in and day out entice camaraderie among eaters? Hell no! It will breed resentment by and quell support from other eaters.

I love this old quote from George about why the Olympic commitee won’t have anything to do with competitive eating.
Shea blames the sport’s lack of an international sponsor for the IOC’s silence. “You see, it’s my perception that the Olympics are all about money. We’re much more pure than that,” he said.
What does he think it is about, then? Is he acting like it is about something else?

Okay, as of this morning there IS a nice Road Report Write Up mentioning eaters in the Oregon contest at http://www.ifoce.com. I’m sure it was a result of the IFOCE’s own initiative.

I’m sure those poll results make Arturo feel just great. As much as I like Juliet, this is one decision the IFOCE got right, so they’re batting .333, all-in-all not bad, I guess, except this isn’t baseball.
