There is only one fair way and that is on a fist come first serve basis.

So if 10 no-names sign up first, that’s what it should be…a contest between 10 no-names?

    I could live with that.

12 Seat Contest: If you’re the IFOCE you have a responsibility to the Sponsor, so you reserve 2 seats for your very best eaters and then 2 seats for locals so that you have an extreme contrast with the results. The remaining 8 seats should be first come first serve.

I think that it should be the eater’s responsibility no matter what. Either make it open to all, or invite only but all eaters should have to sign up no matter what. I also think that it should be posted how many spots are available and we should be able to see a nearly live time of who signed up when. Basically a timestamp of some sort. Do I see it happening? Of course not, they can’t even be bothered to update rankings or give a full report of the contests.

I like Steakbellie’s idea with the 2 locals. Possibly bump it up to 15 eaters. Maybe reserve the top 8 slots for top 25 eaters on a first come basis, then the rest could be open to anyone else.

Next, the rankings would have to be seriously looked at. They couldn’t remain static and be influenced by just 2 contests.

So only Pat and Joey right now get two guaranteed spots? Kobayashi’s out of luck? Sonya’s out of luck? Tim is out of luck?

What’s wrong with the current system? It’s not broken.

I didnt say Joey and Pat but it could be them. Maybe it’s Bob & Hall. Maybe it’s X & Sonya. The reality is that you need an elite eater at every contest to make it interesting to the public….and this isnt an exact formula for EVERY contest.

And who’s to say that Joey cant sign up for a contest like everybody else once in awhile?

it’s also important to have those local spots open so the ave Joe can take a shot. Krystals recognizes that everybody loves an underdog.

I signed up within seconds of it being posted, even went in late to work just to make sure I had a spot. I bet ya with this much $$$$$ on the line you won’t see one unknown or bottom ranked dude at the table. Bummer huh.

In the early days of the IFOCE they were grateful if you showed up and took the time out to compete. The second IFOCE contest took place at Burritoville in NYC in early 2002. There was no such a thing as prize money for the winner . There was $500 in the kitty that evening which was not intended for the 1st 2nd & 3rd place finishers. If it wasnt for Krazy Kevin making an issue over it, they might have held off on awarding prize money to the winner for god knows how long

That is where you are wrong Paul Porkslap so you had better put your $$$$$ away before it disappears. I hear there is a lower ranked eater in pizza so I will gladly take that bet.

A few years ago the IFOCE held a wing eating contest near the 42st vanderbilt port authority terminal with some cheap comedian as the entertaiment. Pete mierniki was able to slip his way through the registration process or they chose him just to make it look as though registration isnt fixed. . They did the same thing with La famiglia allowing a lower ranked eater US male to enter the contest Although he is alot better eater than mierniki

All I ask is that the registrations start in the evening, like 7PM, so normal working-class stiffs (which most of us are) can work a full day. Then, we wouldn’t have to make “special arrangements” to be on-line at noon, 8:45 am, 2:58PM, or whatever.
This would not only help the “regular guys”, it would boost productivity at work, therefore increasing the United States gross national product, which in turn helps stimulate the economy, which would encourage more food places to have eating contests with the influx of extra marketing money they’d now have. Who’s with me?!?

SPBB why should they change registration time? From what transpired with La famiglia it doesnt matter what time you register. The pick who they want from the list.

All I know on this issue is,,,,,,,,,,, I have never been denied a spot at any event I have signed up for, some have been stand-by (but very few) I live on the west coast and log in more miles than Wild-Bill, so something is up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s a little poem entitled, A Less than Splenda’d Thing … for Sonya:

In the five years they’ve been toyin’ with ya,
The puppeteers’ latest move was to shut you out of LaFamiglia.
Though this may be a boat that’s long been rockin’,
It’s also the sound of opportunity knockin’.

Their relationship with many eaters is not paved with Splenda,
On the contrary, it’s like dealing with the original gangsta.
So Sonya, close that MLE door and contemplate your fu-cha,
It’s much brighter on the outside, ‘cause you’re the real lollapalooza!

    Koby too!

People are overreacting a bit. If you look at the event itself, you can see why a lot of eaters, even those who registered early, did not get in.

Here you have a contest in New York City, which is pretty accessible for most people and is located in the Northeast, where a major of ranked eaters are from. The contest also takes place on a holiday weekend, which means a lot of people have that Monday off, which allows for more West Coast and South West eaters to make the trip.

But the biggest factors are the food, which is pizza, and that leaves a much more palatable taste in your mouth afterwards than some of the other foods on the circuit, and there is also a significant cash prize, which alone should draw in a lot of eaters. A lot of people were probably aware of these factors, whether consciously or unconsciously, which is why so many people applied early.

So if you’re the IFOCE and you had about 40 people apply at 12:01, and only 12 spots to fill, you’re going to have to make some choices and leave some eaters out, which seems to be what has happened here.

You guys act like it’s your birthright to eat in these contests.

  25. anonymous said

agree somewhat fanatic but some of the names left out were left out for personal reasons and that is why people are upset. If they went out of their way to email the standby’s individually or at least come up with some kind of bullshit alibi , it would build some trust or reassurance even though the excuse is bogus to begin with. By not giving a concrete reason as to why you were put on standby is a poor way of running a show. You come back with the excuse . “They are running a business” Well, you know what ? Business like that don’t stay in business for very long. How they survived 7yrs is beyond me . For those that find the complainers on this site childish and annoying , all i can say is it has to happen to you in order for you to know how it feels. It just so happens that a big name eater was shut out of an event and instead of whining about it, she took care of business.

Rhonda – Speaking of Sonia, is it really brighter on the outside? Sure, she may be dealing with more BS lately, but there’s a lot more money for her in the IFOCE than anywhere else.

Anonymous @ 10:49am Why does the IFOCE owe you an answer as to why you’re a standby? If you did not get chosen and are in the same standby position as many others, then suck it up like a man (or woman or Seiken) and deal with it. You obviously have a beef with the IFOCE and must take everything personally. We do not hear all the others (and there were many) complaining on here about being a standby. Some get chosen and some are standby, plain and simple. Tell us who you are and what makes you so special as to why you should be accepted. Until then, grab a tissue, wipe the tears and move on to the next event.

All I’m saying Rhoda, is that this is an event in a popular city, with a popular food, and a large sum of money, which means it is going to attract a large number of eaters, resulting in some eaters being left out in the cold, like Sonya. If the IFOCE had accepted Sonya, who should they have put on standby instead? And why would it have been any fairer to put that person on standby than Sonya?

F-313, I do understand what you’re saying and given those auspices, you do make sense—-NYC, popular food, large # of eaters, limited slots.

Fanatic, hold that thought. I need to go take a Dying Breed. I’ll be back in a few.

Okay Fanatic I’m back. As I was saying, I do understand your point, and given those auspices, you do make sense—-NYC, popular food, large # of eaters, limited slots —- but still tainted with favoritism in most cases.

Anyway, deciding who attends what event will be less of a burden on the IFOCE in the future, since it certainly looks as if there will be one less popular eater to have to be concerned with. I do hope she puts her Web site back up soon, however, because it was one of my favorites.

MM, two or three years ago I think she could have made more money in the Fed, but not today. In the Fed she’s compared against all the larger men, and she’s such a competitor she wouldn’t have it any other way.

But I think (I’ll save my small woman speech.) she would be more of a draw on her own because she is one of the greatest living legends of CE of all time. The Fed plays only mild lip service to that fact, but she’s no longer where their interests are.

That’s why she needs to not let the MLE door hit her in the ass as she vacates the premises.

Maybe Sonya should sign with the aice this way she could dominate every one of those joke contests but still be number one . I think she likes being #1 more than the cash. Considering they dont pay much she would have to work extra hard. Like maybe 6 first place finishes to net $3 grand
