It appears that there will be a dvd released in March 2010 of competitive eating shows from the past (and perhaps present). Kobayashi does not appear on the cover, Gal Sone and male “Food Fighters” including Shirota are pictured. This is the first DVD of competitive eating of which I am aware.

What is your obsession with the Asian eaters?

Now that is funny. In a misplaced adjective, Beautiful Brian once wrote that I was an “Asian Lover.” That was very funny to me too, though one of those unintended consequences on his part. Thus, I will answer the purported anonymous 11:32 question, or rather why I thought the release of a Japanese dvd of competitive eating shows might be of interest to the competitive eating community, anonymi and others. It is something usually not available in the States and is the first of which I am aware.

There is much to be learned if you wish to improve your eating skills or learn about the world of competitive eating by watching the top eaters. How does Kobayashi do it? How does Sonya do it? What are the things other eaters can learn from watching them? Of course, there are many others from whom one can learn, but those two have lessons to teach that many do not. That is one answer.

A second reason I admire Kobayashi and Sonya is because of their character. Kobayashi is humble, thanks people profusely for their support, never ever makes excuses, never ever says anything negative about the food in contests. He appreciates what others do for him and efforts they make to communicate. He is a Warrior. Because he does not speak English, much of his character is not accessible to English native speakers.

Sonya is tenacious and incredibly talented, is not afraid to show her emotions at times, and on her website is gracious and generous. She pays no attention and does not respond to those who criticize her elsewhere. Additionally, I admire her precisely because she is a tiny woman with an amazing capacity and skill, and I would feel the same were she of any ethnic background. She would still be my favorite eater though I am enthusiastic about many eaters. The same is true for Kobayashi. That he is Japanese is of little importance though I am certainly happy that by chance I can communicate with him in far from perfect Japanese on my part.

The last answer is about my connection to Japan. It is totally by chance that my involvement through Crazy Legs’s being a fan of competitive eating and the Nathan’s hotdog contest and my dream, from the time I was in college, of going to Japan to study ceramics and Japanese calligraphy, intersected beautifully. That dream was realized 45 years later, and I have been able to share that dream and place with both of my “children.” I am not obsessed, rather I am passionate about my art, my children, my adopted country, my friends, my families, competitive eating fans and eaters, travel, reading, poetry, and Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep movies.

    You asked. I answered.

You know what else is funny Rona? How you inadvertantly accuse me of making that comment by throwing my name into the forum. For a lady that is far more intelligent than i to resort to this kind of childish behavior appears out of character on your end, Make me the bad guy right? Thats the in thing on this site right? I wonder who the bully is now?

What a nice answer CLM. Anyone who meets you can clearly see your love of the sport and the people involved. I wonder if part of Koby’s mystique is that most of us cant communicate traditionally with him. The few times I have met him I was always impressed that his graciousness transcended language.

Its easy to see why anyone would love Sonya of course.

Steak are you going to be down in for the PB&B contest?

How can you not love Koby and Sonya is what I would like to know? They are laughing and smiling and having fun out in the world of CE. Sure you have to get your game face on but if your not having fun out there why bother.

I always have a good time with Koby and Sonya…..and basically everybody. My goal when I see Koby is always to make him laugh – which can be tough because of two things: the language barrier, and number two, because most of my jokes are lousy!! It’s great to be a part of an organization filled with people who do what we do, even though some people think we’re nuts….which most of us are. Happy New Year, chowheads!!

Asian eaters are well liked because of their outgoing personalities (like Steak and CLM noted), but also, I think, because they’re proof that this crazy sport of competitive eating isn’t limited to us gluttonous Americans. Although for some, this “invasion of our turf” is a reason NOT to like the Asian eaters.
