Wow; nice totals. The pounds eaten get crazier each time, making me feel more and more incompetent, heh heh. Who else competed?

It wasnt an earth shattering performance on my end but i haven’t put up numbers like that in years! I am very pleased but more important Crazy Legs kicked ass in hotdogs then flew in from MN to LI for a big desert . Eater X and Pat what more can i say. Great Great job.

I and most other people only care about the winners. I only know of three major league eaters and thery are Kobyashi, Bertoletti and Chestnut and as they say in the wrestling circles all the other eaters are just jobbing for those three to make them look good and the others should be in a secondary league actually.

Wow, this sounds like a great contest. Pat rocked it for the Hooligans (as usual). Good job to the scorekeeper for getting us complete totals, although I’m a little skeptical about how all the totals seem to be rounded to the nearest HALF POUND (except for Pat). There should be no such thing as a three way tie for sixth in a weighted contest.

Though I wasn’t there, it is so great to have the Old Schoolers like Cookie, Badlands, Moses, Crazy Legs, and Brian mixing it up, whether it being via judging/officiating/entertaining and/or eating with the young guns (Pat Pertoletti). It looked as if everyone had lots of fun.

I just can’t digest the totals. Eating 8 or 9 lbs in 8 minutes (Chris Abatsas and Crazy Legs) is totally awesome–especially for Legs, who just ate 2 dozen hot dogs the day prior. But it hurts my own stomach to think of Pat’s and Tim’s totals–over 15 and 13 lbs! Even Tim’s Dad’s total of 3.5 lbs seems unbearable to me.

MM – they didn’t weigh mine, and they didn’t weigh Pete’s, and as the Jim McGreevey guy was at the other end of the table, I don’t know what was happening there. Not like it matters, but accurate totals – HA!

Rhondanonymous, It is EASIER to compEAT back to back. You stretch your stomach in a more natural way than the methods currently being used.

Congrats to all, for everything, always.

Has anyone else noticed, since allegations of missing plates, additional plates, cheating, etc. that most eaters numbers have dropped a bit.

so then Joe, if that is the case, shouldn’t you do a competition the day before a competition in order to do better? Why not do that instead of the “methods currently being used?”

Hi Joe. As always, though I often disagree with at least part of what you say, it is still a kick for me to read your cynical comments mixed with kernels of truth.

I suspect you’re right about the traveling part. And I know you know better than me about it being easier for a competitive eater to eat at contests on back-to-back days. But to the layman (I don’t want to say lay woman, as I want to avoid images of a horizontal R.E.), it seems very tough to eat such large quantities of food at such close time intervals.

But how can you say the quantities have dropped? That part of your assertion baffles me.

  17. Gentleman Joe said

    June 18, 2007 @ 12:38 pm

Not dropped off since other yrs, just since the most recent controversies. I’m not naming names, just look up the purported numbers from last year & earlier this year to the more recent #’s & you’ll see what i’m talking about.

Disagreements are usually much more fun than agreements, especially if you can put them aside for an hour or so at a time. BTW, those kinds of images are permanently burned in my head.

Carey, I believe that is the reason I won Ribs so handily. From eating 7lbs of strawberries the day before. You can’t always compete back to back. Even though I have done 3 seperate contests in the same DAY a few times. I don’t see a whole lot of ways to train for tomorrow though. You’ve either got it or you don’t on something that short. I’d like to see it be 3 dogs for the 1st 3 rounds & 5 in the last round myself.

Wild Bill and Philly Guy, I’m curious since you said they didn’t weigh your plates, what do you think you actually should have got? Was it even in the 4lb range and they just guessed the weight on the 5th plate and put .5 pounds for everyone that was one their 5th plate? Or did they invent the total completely and you weren’t actually all on your 5th plate? Just curious. I’m kinda thinking that this contest may have been really hard to accurately weigh because of all the mess/debris that a food like shortcake would make. So maybe they just put 1/2 pound increments for everyone since they figured doing it to the ounce wouldn’t be accurate. But I wasn’t there, just my guess. . .

Not to stray off topic, but you know that there is going to be chili on top of them tomorrow, right? And the bun is toasted. Yeah, it is totally speed, I wish there was more endurance, since my throat has been swollen the past couple of days.
Rhonda, I think it only fair that you give us those images, after you tell us of your boyfriend’s texas wiener.

Kevin – when asked how much I had eaten, by Eric, I said four and two-thirds (which he wrote down), as it appeared there was approximately 1/3 remaining on my fifth plate, when compared to the full one I had not touched (at this point, I did not know there was a scale around). I had no debris on my plates – I used a spoon, and all four of my “empties” were stacked underneath my fifth plate. As in other contests, debris SHOULD count against you – this should have been a weighed event. Like I said, not that it matters; I was WAY out of first or second place, and I doubt that the Axia 3 point standings will count for anything. I highly doubt that they will weigh anybody’s remains this weekend at shoo-fly, unless they need to to determine clear placings for the top seven (the money spots). Anybody clearly out of the top seven, it will be guess work.

I’m bringing my own scale, a camera, and one of those CSI angle-measure thingys they use to establish scale in photographs for measuring things like portions of hot dogs from now on.

Yeah, I’m Mr. Negativity today… sorry in advance to the person who comments on here as Mr. Negativity.

Wild Bill you should be more concerned about dropping a few pounds than bicker over a few extra ounces on your plate . Dont you get tired of showing up at contests finishing out of the money and all you gain is extra calories?

Bill, maybe if more people started bringing their own scales and CSI measuring tools, they’d get the point that people care about if they’re weighed correctly or not. As someone who is usually out of the money myself, I wish they would care more about weighing things perfectly. It really wouldn’t take much additional time, why do they act like it’s such a chore? It technically doesn’t matter to anyone too much except the eaters involved and their friends, but even if I do poorly, I want there to be a record of exactly how poorly I did 🙂 Regardless of prize money and points, it’s fun to see who beat who and by how much. I like seeing all the exact numbers for everyone, just like I like looking through the eatfeats database here. They did a pretty good job at fries in Texas though. I mean, we were both there. They had each of us watch – no matter how well we did – as our plates were weighed exactly afterwards. So we knew the numbers were correct and we could have objected if they did something wrong. More contests should be like that. But it does seem like a lot aren’t and everything gets jumbled and confused afterwards and nobody (especially the eaters) know what is going on. Then later on when they realize there was a mistake, it’s too late. I keep hoping that situation will get better as it is certainly a pet peeve of mine. All they have to do is slow down and weigh each person’s plate and record their total one at a time with the eater watching to make sure a plate wasn’t missed or something. If the people in the money are obvious, surely announce them before this so the crowd isn’t waiting around. Then weigh all the non-money people afterwards. It’d take all of an extra 5 minutes. I think eaters just need to start being more vocal about it. If you see your plate isn’t being weighed, just pipe up and ask them to do it. A 3 way tie for 6th place really doesn’t make sense. Anyway, sorry for all the rambling. This kind of thing just strikes a nerve for me. I figure if we’re going to give up doing amateur eating contests to do MLE eating events, we deserve a little more care taken in this regard.

    OK…

Since this was a “weighted” event, and someone else already pointed out the 1/2 pound count for all eaters except the winner I won’t go there except to ask…how accurate are the totals really? If the event is scored by weight, EVERYONE’s plates should be weighed at the end in the name of accuracy, not just the winners and the money spots.

And what the hell difference does it make what size someone is? Rankings and points are determined by the weight of the plates, not the weight of the eater. Damn…that last remark was just plain uncalled for.

mrs negativity all the lower ranked eaters i know do not care about finishing out of the money or whatever they all have their owns reasons for doing what they do. maybe the contests are fun or they want to be part of something or compete or have a reason to eat but whatever nobody knows what a persons reason is. obviously top 10 or about care about the money but anyone including the eaters themself knows other eaters have no chance

K-Ro nailed it when he said even when you finish out of the money, it’s fun to see who be who and by how much. For some eaters, those little “didn’t finish last” or “I beat so-and-so” moments are pretty much the only reward they’ll get (aside from the chance to compete, but part of competing is knowing the results). That’s why fair and accurate record keeping is so important.

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin….. When was the last time either of the Shea brothers participated in an eating contest? Do you think they are in it for the fun? Do you think they have any clue that anyone could ever possibly be doing this for any other reason than the money? I am sure that if it was cost effective, they would spend more time with weighing and counting more than just the top eaters, but they don’t look past the bottom line, and the eaters get the short end of it. I think that your suggestion about bringing a scale yourself is a great one, and don’t do it hoping they notice and take action, do it for you guys alone, and enjoy the comradary it instills. Don’t stop there either, look for other ways to clean up the problems surfacing in the contests. Make it as much yours as you can. The Sheas will notice that, it takes more off of their hands.
