I give Sonya a hard time I know but I have to say that I have to start recognizing her talent. For a woman shes not too bad. She might even be able to give Gal Sone a run for the money.

Sorry – I took a slow and leisurely drive through Maryland and Delaware on the way back and just got home. Didn’t know my results were that important. I have one error to what SB already posted – but I think he is correct. I have that Chip and Bob tied for fourth place, but they did introduce Bob as the runner up for the money, which went to fourth place. I didn’t get a chance to talk to Bob and Chip much after the contest, so we’ll assume that SB’s numbers are correct for those two. There were sixteen eaters, all ranked for the pro contest. Juliet was NOT DQ’d, but she was unfortunately deducted 2 slices for debris and / or not following the rules stated at the beginning of the contest. Judging was done by 3 Brothers personnel, and from what I saw, was fair.
Complete results:
1.) Pat Bertoletti – 22 slices
2.) Sonya Thomas – 20 slices
3.) Tim Janus – 18 slices
4.) Chip Simpson – 17.5 slices
5.) Bob Shoudt – 17 slices
6.) Pat Philbin – 12 slices
7.) Allen Goldstein – 11 slices
7.) Russ Keeler – 11 slices
7.) Juliet Lee – 11 slices
7.) Brad Sciullo – 11 slices
11.) Micah Collins – 10 slices
12.) Larry McNeil – 8 slices
12.) William Myers – 8 slices
12.) Brian Subich – 8 slices
15.) Brian Seiken – 7 slices
16.) Pete Miernicki – 6 slices

Bill’s results are correct with the exception of Chip who ate 17 . To my knowledge there were no partial slices credited . I posted my results directly from the scorecard. What’s the story now, everyone has to get the ok from eatfeats link before they log on to my site? It used to be the other way around. The times they are a changin huh?

To clear up any confusion about the rules stated at the beginning of the contest:
1.) No dunking of the pizza or crusts. ( I believe Mike Castellano actually said no desecration of the pizza – for a moment I thought I had stumbled into an AICE contest – just kidding, AICE guys. You just play by different rules.)
2.) There would be a deduction of one slice for every four crusts left behind – but with this twist: you were not allowed to advance to your next pie UNTIL you had eaten the entire pie, crusts and all, in front of you. So, in actuallity, the crust deduction only applied to the final pie you were eating. I believe this was done to prevent eaters from skipping the crusts completely, and any arguments about what constituted a crust (no sauce and cheese left attached, 1 inch wide, 1.5 inches wide, etc., etc., etc., blah, blah, blah)

Good job all! I’m curious, how many slices were there per pie?

Kevin, yes, 8 slices, 16 to 18-inch pies (hand tossed, so not perfectly sized like Domino’s or Pizza Hut).

Thanks Bill. That gives me a better idea of how to interpret the results.

This was a very diffucult contest . It was cold pizza but cold or hot , the pizza was very tasty. It looked easy but once you go through a few slices you realize certain eaters might be in for a long day. I confess to being one of them. I commend anyone that was able to move on to the second pie. For those that were only able to eat 8, 7, or even 6 slices . they should also be commended for a gallant effort. For the people that were not participants and want to pass judgement with comments such as “Oh he only ate 6 slices or 7 slices etc etc.” , shut the hell up because you are an ignoramous and have no idea what it feels like when your digestive system says “No mas” .

I saw that Juliet got penalized, but I’m certain she ate more than eleven slices. She must have eaten at least one pie; eight pieces. Then there would be all the pieces of the second pie, and I’m not even counting the crusts. That, alone, would make it fourteen. As I watched her, I’m certain she began her third pie. Micah Collins and Chip Simpson, who were eating next to her, could help clarify this.

To avoid any type of controversy or debris they should not have allowed you to eat another slice until you finished the slice you were eating . For you to say Juliet started a third pie when she had debris from the scond pie would be ignoring the rules that the judges set forth. You must finish a full pie before you go to the next pie.

Good job to Pat and the rest of the gang. Another win for the Hungry Hooligans. Impressive outing by Sonya too…putting some serious pressure on Pat B. A year ago, her total would have beat him.

Juliet Lee was destined to fill Sonya Thomas shoes one day and this is how they treat her? Deducting almost 6 slices of pizza from her total is sickening.. How is she supposed to explain this to her friends. Some of the other mediocre eaters that finished with 11 slices can now boast they tied Juliet Lee.in pizza. She has a good mind to defect to the AICE.

It’s hard to fill Sonya Thomas’ shoes. If Juliet can win HALF the titles as Sonya, she will have exceeded everyone’s expectations. As for predictions that Juliet will defect to AICE following her “unfair” pizza slice deductions, don’t forget that AICE has rules and judges too. It’s no guarantee that those slices would have counted in an AICE contest.
The way I see it, every great eater has rookie moments like this early in their career. But they learn from them. Next time, she’ll pay closer attention to her crusts (or her wing bones, or her dunking, or her detritus). If baseball is a game of inches, then competitive eating is a game of ounces. If you’re too busy thinking about pounds and not thinking about the ounces, you can get in trouble.

Anonymous you don’t just walk in to the IFOCE as a talented female and “replace” Sonya Thomas. While Juliet is certainly a tremendous talent, she is no Sonya. It’s also not fair to compare the two because that puts tremendous and unnecessary pressure on Juliet to achieve an ideal that is virtually unattainable. Female competitive eaters like Sonya are likely to come around but once in a generation, if even that frequent.
Perhaps Juliet would be better off as an independent, where she could probably grab an occasional win here and there, and perhaps pick up second or third place money in many contests that she entered.
In the IFOCE, however, Juliet’s chances of doing that when three or more eaters ranked in the top eight or 10 show up are not very good.

Congratulations Pat! Everyone in the top five put up tremendous numbers, especially Pat and Sonya, who both exceeded last year’s winning total.
I firmly believe that Pat would have won the event even if Joey would have showed up. I say that because Joey is the master of dunking. Without the water to dunk the food in it would ikely be a whole different ballgame for him.
