Pat almost doubles Joey @ Red Faction Mars Bars contest

The contest should start at 2 pm Pacific, 5 pm eastern.

update The results have been posted:
1) Pat Bertoletti 38 Mars bars
2) Joey Chestnut 20
3) Tim Janus 10

This is probably Joey Chestnut’s biggest percentage margin of defeat. (Joey ate 32 HDB in the 2005 Nathan’s finals to Kobayashi’s 49)

update Pat wore the Evel Knievel costume that he wanted to wear at the Nathan’s finals.

update #2 Pat and Joey tied in the world record attempt with 3 Mars bars in a minute. This is considerably less than Bertoletti’s 7.6 bars / minute pace in the contest.

GettyImages has some event pictures.

update #3 Red Faction has a video of the record attempts

Get used to it . This is where MLE is headed in the future. No more registration for IFOCE members invites only and the rest of us are supposed to join the Joey Pat fan page to cheer them on

This should be no surprise that Pat won since this is a “sweets” contest which is his speciality. However, I don’t think anyone expected him to beat Joey by this big of a margin. Pat’s #4 ranking needs to be looked at, he should be moving up to at least #3 if not #2.

More grumbling. This was explained. Top three July 4th finishers invited to try to break Guiness record, basically an event, a mini-competition, a reward for all the hard work of three eaters finishing one, two, three at Nathans. Yes, you are supposed to cheer on your fellow eaters. Work harder if you don’t like it, complain elsewhere, whatever.

If no events are added to the IFOCE schedule, there will be a six week gap between contests with open registration. (The next being the Aug 21 LA gyoza contest.) There will be a two month gap between any events east of the Rockies.

expect everyone and their granmother to register for Buffalo because nothing else is on the horizon. They might have to start dispersing eaters to other organizations like they did in the NBA back in the day

The bar/minute rate difference between the contest and wr attempts is maybe because the wr rules might be different than the contest. Like for wr jalapeno attempts, maybe they had to completely down one and show the judge their empty mouth before going on to the next bar…?

does anyone really care ? Buy a bunch of mars bars and see how many you can eat. What is the big deal

I think the great Humble Bob would have had the best chance to break the Guinness 1 minute record. There’s a reason why he’s ranked # 2, you know.

Hey, you know what, even if there were no competitive eating events in the ifoce the rest of the year, I could get my jollies just by watching greats like Joey, Pat, and Tim do exhibitions. They’re three of the best four (not counting the Great Notorious BOB) eaters in the world and I think we’re all lucky just to have the privilege of reading about their exploits and accomplishments. I think even Koby would admit that he could add to his above average game by studying these three eating machines. Wow!

Joey just had an off day, or maybe he held back to give Pat a chance for some media attn. After all they are good friends.

Did tim participate or was he there just as a cheerleader? I mean damn. 10? Seiken could eat
10 plus he would have been more entertaining.

Candy bars seems like one of the hardest foods to eat and one of the most dangerous. Definitely a choking hazard there. Maybe Joey had trouble swallowing the large chunks of bar (psychologically or physically) and had to spend more time chewing. We all know from Pat’s infamous “swallow-a-Krystal-burger-whole” video from a few years ago, that he has no problems in that area.

    Just a few comments/observations:

    1. Congratulations Pat! You truly are the sweets specialist. No one, but no one can f$%& with you in that food group. (You used to be that dominant in jalapenos, but you now have an equal.)

    2. Joey, you should have avoided this one. I know you eat competitively, primarily for fun, and that’s an admirable attitude. But you’re in the fishbowl as the world’s #1-ranked eater. You’re without question the one to beat in HDBs, but that’s just one contest, even if it is THE major.

    3. This shows the difference between Joey and Kobayashi. Koby would never, ever let himself get dominated like this, even in candy bars (sweets), which are a food he doesn’t like.

    4. Tim … how do you go from eating nearly 50 waterlogged HDBs in 10 minutes to only 10 Mars bars in 5 minutes? Seriously, I bet if I were to pull 10 people randomly off the street and offer $100 to the one who could eat the most Mars bars in 10 minutes, at least two or three of them would down five or six bars in that amount of time.

Tim did not have his magic crystal lite formula with him this time. The stuff that transformed him from a 16 hot dog eater in 2004 to 22 in 2005 and eventually 46 last month

Pat just smoked them on this one. Together Joey and Tim would have still lost. Seems like Joey and Tim didn’t show up.

Rhonda, Koby let himself get dominated in chicken wings, where he lost to many eaters.

WRONG! 12:09. If you have to resort to that event, then Koby must be pretty damned good. Hell, Koby didn’t even try because of his jaw. You or I could have topped his effort that day.

whatev rhonda. anybody who watched the wing contest could see kobi wasnt hurt. you should really stop making excuses for that boy lover (his gf looks like a boy). Yes, Joey lost to Vise and he owns it, without blaming a phantom injury. the point is that kobi and joey have both been “dominated”, you were saying otherwise. also, it is expected that joey have more bad days since he competes about five times as much as the half-a-man ; )

Kobayashi told me he could have beaten this world record using only his left ear to eat with, and beat up Pat, and that Guinness dude using only evil glances.

Yeah, right A-1:53. Koby really faked that injury to save face. What a wimp.

Curious though, as to how he lucked up and (easily) won the last competitive EATing major event in which the two competed.

Now Pat is pulling out Koby-like dominating victories against Joey.

Bob is ranked # 2 in the world because he has Joey’s number. He does not have Koby’s number.

Go grab a 5-hour energy drink and rap w/ BB.
