It’s not a bad mistake to mention an eater who is blowing everyone away this year. It’s not a bad mistake to mention a rookie who beat Chestnut AND Sonya her first season. It’s not a bad mistake to mention (during a NATHAN’S interview) a person who on her first time out ate 40 hdbs.

Google her and you find all of her competitive eating accomplishments. If you’re a normal person, you’re impressed as hell at her numbers, enchanted by her adorableness and humble interviews, and excited to see what she’ll do in the future…

If you’re a dick, you’ll focus on the one negative thing that comes up, that happened years ago, and pretend like that’s what defines her.

I’m so utterly sick of the negativity on this site, hiding behind the word “anonymous.”

For Christ’s sake people, grow a conscience and live with some fricking kindness and accountability!

Here is an anonymous post from another thread today and it makes sense, anonymous or not.

“Miki Sudo did not get a free pass and was not determined to be guilt free. She was very lucky. What she did is still a crime, and her punishment for this was light and obviously some factors were taken into account to let her start her life again. Nevertheless, no one would be being mean to google her and find out exactly what she did and put that information in the press. It is the truth pure and simple. That is what real news is. It would be ridiculous for Nathans to trumpet her on July 4th. She is frankly a public relations nightmare. If she is paid to go away that too would be really bad. Do the winners of each qualifier get any money besides going to Nathans? I would be shocked completely if she did compete on the 4th. And in the end, for her, she ought to find something else to distinguish herself and keep herself out of the news for a while.”

Good for you, Michelle! Regardless of what’s the reason behind the decision, no one can take away her pure awesomeness when it comes to eating. Plus, tho I’ve never met her in person, in the interactions I’ve had with her she’s been sweet, encouraging & enthusiastic.

Yes indeed, I’m completely enchanted. Google her and you find a f’ing felony conviction. Get real – this is a business, and nobody cares how wonderful you or anyone else thinks she is. Yep, I’m a dick and I guess the people in NYC are too. I know it’s way funny how sensitive they might be about losing thousands of their loved ones and someone making a joke about it. It’s disturbing that you don’t see that.

The details of the incident suggest that it’s a complete coincidence that it took place on September 11th. The dudes flight just happened to be booked for that day, and it doesn’t sound like Sudo planned that. Could have been any other day… not really a conscious attack on the anniversary. I bet she’s sorry anyway.

  11. Anonymous said

    July 1, 2013 @ 10:57 pm

She should be beyond sorry. It doesn’t matter what day it was, but being on that day just makes it way worse because it is still a felony but one which reminds people of thousands of lives lost and lives forever changed. Miki chose to do something and she has to live with the consequences. No matter how nice she may be, what she did on any day is also something she will have to live with for the rest of her life. Or she should. That she would think that she could represent the US on July 4th through a hotdog contest just shows how incredibly naive and immature she is. I do not care that she can beat the top eater in the world and could not cheer for her. As a person, a human being, of course I hope that she will get her life together but she should do so privately. She has had more than enough publicity for a lifetime, and it isn’t good publicity. She could just as well have been in jail this July 4th.

Wow there are sure a lot of judgmental people here. I’m sure 10:57 and 7:53 have never done anything they regretted and are perfect model citizens. That’s fine, hide behind your computer screen and talk like you are A holy saint and havent made a mistake in their life. Geez, prisoners who have committed murder get more slack then Miki has gotten these past few days. Miki has openly acknowledged what she did was wrong and regrets it everyday. What else do you want from her? Just sit at home and never do anything for the rest of her life? Will that please you and the rest of the world? At what point do we allow a person to move on with their life? What is done, is done. She got her punishment through the legal system and did her time. You can disagree with the sentencing but thats the way the justice system works. Want toi change it? run for office and do something instead of bitching about it. Apparently, some anonymous assholes are envious of Miki’s success and can’t stand someone else excelling in something that they themselves will never be succesful in. Misery sure likes company.

Wow is right on the money (as are Michelle and Larell Marie). I have had the pleasure of getting to know Miki and can say with certainty that she is an extremely nice person. There is nothing phony about her and one unfortunate event she regrets with all her heart and soul does not define a person’s character. If people knew all th e facts that led to that fateful day, perhaps they would understand better how this was a perfect storm, a one in a million set of circumstances. She has pai d a very heavy price for her actions and fulfilled her debt to society. It’s time to give her the chance to prove she’s worthy of your support.

  14. Anonymous said

    July 2, 2013 @ 1:07 pm

What facts do we need to know? Nothing justifies or even mitigates what she did. Have you ever thought about the other people who were on that plane? Why were they on that plane? What if one of them was flying to his daughter’s wedding, or going home to see the birth of his first child, or flying home to visit his dying mother in the hospital? And what if he missed that event because Dumb-dumb decided to call in a bomb threat?

Miki either didn’t care or didn’t think about these possibilities. She only cared about herself and, on top of that, she did something that she should have had the common sense to know she was never going to get away with. So…best-case scenario: she’s an idiot who didn’t learn to anticipate the consequences of her actions. Worst-case scenario: she’s selfish and doesn’t give a s–t about anybody else.

Rich and Wow are saying the same thing basically. They have made their points. Unfortunately they are both wrong on many counts. 1:07 has it right. You can argue all you want Wow, Rich, anyone else who wants to vouch for what a nice person MIki is in person and how sorry she is for what she did. That would be fine if what she did was something like many people complain about here, disloyalty to an organization, signing under a false name, dissing someone, or even something bigger like lying about your own resume in the press. It is competitive eating after all. It is entertainment. What MIki did is criminal. If she wants to move ahead with her life, she should. She is lucky to have some people stand up for her and be her friend. She will need that just as anyone needs friends always. But, and BUT again, 1:07 has it right. Not only the people on that plane were affected and perhaps missed something they can never ever regain through no fault of their own but if she were to compete in Nathans (and elsewhere as I am thinking that she may choose otherwise after Nathans), it would be an incredible heartache and slap in the face of everyone affected by 9/11 to have her compete on July 4th. Not mean, just telling it like it is.

  16. Wow said

    July 2, 2013 @ 1:26 pm

@1:07 she made a emotional decision. She was upset over the curcumstances and made a bad choice. When people become overly emotional about something, logic tends to stay on the sideline. No one is trying to justify what she did was okay. We get that loud and clear. Our point is, let the girl move on with her life pursue her dreams. No one died that day. At most, people lost a few hours of their time and possibly some important events in their life (new born baby, wedding, etc) but no one knows for sure. If that is the only justification for your constant bashing of miki, you should go on every website that talks about murders and rapist that have committed worse crimes and bitch about them.

  17. Wow said

    July 2, 2013 @ 1:56 pm

@1:24 how do you know how the people on the plane were effected? Were you on it? My guess is not. the rest is pure speculation. As far as the people affected by 9/11, I’m sure it triggers some raw emotions when they see something like this but I’m sure for the most part, they brush it off as a stupid mistake someone made. You can’t go around generalizing other people’s reaction to a specificity event because you feel a certain way about it. Your only entitled to speak for yourself and how Miki’s action effected you. My guess, it just gave you more power to bash someone you don’t know and envy the success she has had in CE.

This should be a wake-up call, but it’s probably not getting through. I know, I know, it’s a free country and all that but this is very likely to end poorly for everyone concerned. Please just go and take your baggage with you. CE is already on thin ice as being a freak show. The last thing anyone needs here is more media scrutiny. Someone is going to take this and run with it sooner or later, believe me. I get it that you’re a great eater and all. Outstanding job! Now can you take your little sideshow somewhere else?

Cardboard Michelle, if what you said is true, that it’s what you do when you think nobody is watching that reveals who you really are, then who is Miki, the sweet one to your face, or the girl who called in a bomb threat (and probably didn’t give her name)?

  22. Anonymous said

    July 2, 2013 @ 5:15 pm

@2:34 It wasn’t a prank or a joke call. Miki called to inquire about an unauthorized charge on her credit card. People probably give their real names when asking about their own financial accounts.

During the call, she said things for which she was later charged with “misinformation,” not a bomb threat. If you read the story, you might have understood this; if you just watch tv, you probably didn’t.

The plane was turned around for mechanical difficulties before it ever took off, before the call was even made. Lets think about this: the plane was already coming back… before the call was taken…. The call and the flight’s movement on the tarmac were separate events and a coincidence.

Some papers ran corrections after selling the more exciting version of Sudo’s case, but most just left it as is. Who cares anyway? This all happened to fall on the eleventh day of the ninth month, so she’s a f—ing terrorist and gets what she deserves.

You are all a bunch of worthless a-holes. Everyone makes mistakes in lifes and most deserve a chance to redeem themself and move on. She certainly did move on so why don’t you. If she actually planted a bomb, that would be a different scenario but she made a bad decision with a phone call. I’m sure she was very sorry for the inconvenience she put on the others but no harm was done and she paid the price. Give her a break and let’s enjoy her eating talent. It’s always good to see new talent, especially one that can beat the top eaters in the world but now we will miss the one matchup everyone wanted to see at Coney.

This is my second ever post here. I actually vetted this information LONG time ago…..the story is blown way out of proportion…..I, of all people, have no reason to defend her (yes I’m jimmy)

Leave the poor woman alone, she hasn’t done anything to harm anybody…it’s just a perfect storm of coincidences…..in fact, I joked about this many times with her….the fact that she should absolutely hate my guts, but yet we can actually put on a decent show together and hang out….and the weirdness that surrounded her start.

I’ve spent way too much time observing her and hanging around her to be utterly fooled. She’s a down to earth good natured person who ended up in horrible set of circumstances…….anybody can put up a front…it’s the long term that shows the true colors.

People deserve second chances and if you’re so judgmental as to not even hear the story out from all sides/parties before making your decisions, you’re not of the good spirited nature of most of the competitors out there.

I have enormous respect for U.S.Male who has always been forthright, is a great person and eater, and who really did it his way with humor. I appreciate that he is direct and is saying that we should look differently at Miki, give her a chance and of course celebrate that there is huge new talent in CE. This form has trashed many people including U.S. Male many many times, and for things like maybe bad breath or incredible foolishness. Even relatives of eaters have been trashed. So yes, I would say that the best of humanity is not present here in the comments. However, I would ask U.S. Male to ask himself two questions. If Miki were another woman added to the circuit but was either a barely could make it to the table but as a woman she qualified with under 10 or was middle of the pack (meaning there are many of those = replaceable) would he be so enthusiastic about her? And if he were a person on that plane and as a result missed the birth of one of his children, would he say oh well…….someone made a mistake, let’s all move on. To those who say that the press made statements which were retracted, I think an official court record is about as true as one can get to what happened. That is freely available through google, actual court case. Lastly, even if there are untruths, and this has certainly happened to many eaters, CE is entertainment. It is NOT a sport. We can keep saying that it is and all the reasons, but it is not in a traditional sense nor will it ever be. Yet, just like in sports and life, sometimes it is not the real truth which makes people pass judgment on someone but rather their perception of the truth. In the case of Nathans and MLE, a PR firm, it will be people’s perceptions which likely will guide their decisions. OJ was sticking to Miki has a case and all that. Is OJ a lawyer? And even if someone has a case, they have to spend money, a lot of money. What might they get in return? Likely very little except years of aggravation and a minus bank account.

I’m not here as a judge or jury. I can’t afford to be. The skeletons in my close have piled up over the years, and I’m not very proud of many things in my past. I suspect Miki and I are not pioneers of regret.

I’ve moved on. It seems that Miki has moved on from whatever travesties she may have in her past, which is as it should be. We all need to move on.

As a fan of competitive eating, especially Major League Eating, it is my humble opinion that Miki Sudo is one of the top half dozen competitive eaters in the world, and she will probably improve from that level.

Miki is a CE star and I hope her talent shines brightly for years to come.

While your points are valid 7:22, I look as this as a humanity issue, not just Miki’s talent. I hate to see anyone treated so harsh for a mistake that is in the past and should stay there. If she was a so-so eater, I would say the same thing in this situation. I never Miki but from we have learned about her so far in competitive eater, she seems to be trying to do something new in life and show a different image of herself. She isn’t cocky about her wins or talent. If someone on the plane is still angry over the incident then yes, they have a good reason because they were directly impacted by it. None of us on this site or in competitive eating were (I can only assume) so why keep bringing it up and grilling the poor girl about it? This is just my opinion obviously and I’m sure I will get bashed for defending her but oh well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I was excited to see the Miki vs Sonya matchup, but now I will just have to look forward to seeing the Kobi vs Jamie matchup (out of the corner of my eye). Happy 4th everyone.
