Sonya Thomas in Korea Times

The Korea Times has an article (in English) about Sonya Thomas:

When asked if she gets to eat much Korean food, Thomas said she often goes to Korean restaurants, including an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, in the growing Korean-American community in Virginia. “I usually go for ‘bulgogi,’ spicy-tofu stew and spicy-seafood stew. I also love chewing on Korean dried squid, which I think helps my chewing strength.”

She said she had actually lost some weight since becoming a competitive eater and that her cholesterol levels are normal. She plans to continue competing as long as she can stay healthy.

Aside from being a volume eater, another major advantage she says she has over other competitors is her blazing speed and eating technique. “I am really good when it comes to food where you have to move fast and use hands, like eating chicken wings or oysters or lobsters,” she mused.

    Sonya, say it ain’t so!

I was just checking out Sonya’s website and noticed this:

“2007-10-13, 22:41:43: I will not be able to compete at the 2007 Krystals Finals, due to job-related obligations. Nevertheless, I
wish each and every competitor the absolute best at his and her performance. (I’m pulling for you Juliet … )”

I already wanted to let you know how much I missed you in Vegas, but now this. I am very bummed now. You truely have mad skills and are such a sweet lady, I know everyone will miss you.

Would it be because BK told her she would need to work at a Krystals if she competed in that contest again?

Per Krystal Krystal Square Off Bylaws (see Sect. B, Rule 2.1: “In the event that a qualifying regional champion is unable to take his/her place at the final table, said place will be offered to the competitor with the next highest total at the same regional qualifier until the position is filled.” ), Rick Petralia, with 24 Krystals consumed, will take Sonya’s place at the final table in Chattanooga on October 28th. Congratulations, Rick!

After checking out the competition she realized she couldnt finish ahead of Kobe Joey Pat or possibly Shoudt. Do you think an eater of her caliber is going to be satisfied with something like that? I dont think it has anything to do with her job

You must be shittin’ me. The day she runs from any competition is the day this world, as we know it, ends.

No worries Sonya, come back next month and continue your reign where you left off in Sept. Working for the N.Y.C. Subway I know how hard it is to get time off ya day job so I know what you’re going thru. Keep ya head up and continue to stay hungry, focused, healthy, and sweet!
