The East Valley Tribune has a slideshow with a sound track
The SF Chronicle has an article about Joey’s performance in which he describes his training regimen:
Chestnut, 23, started training six weeks ago with what he calls a “hot dog run” two days per week. Each time, he consumed as many hot dogs as possible in 12 minutes, doing his “weird” dance, flexing and wiggling to push the food down.
Then, he didn’t eat for three days to prepare for the next time.
“You have to mentally have a reason to eat that much and maybe convince my body that it’s OK — it’s not going to hurt it,” he said.
One day each week he ate normally. He also took “tons of vitamins,” amino acids and protein supplements.
Before Saturday’s contest, he didn’t eat Thursday or Friday.

Doesnt it seem odd that all of his or her stupid comments are posted while others are deleted . Its all fine and dandy to try to fool us all with this luther nonsense but on the other end, Eater X assuming a duel identity as Helen Haggerty was such a betrayal to Mr Rifkin that he closed comments for almost two weeks .

Wyatt, as much as Luther annoys me, I have to point out that it is clear what he was saying. he was stating that Koby will do just enough to win, no matter what Joey brings, Koby will do one more. His first prediction was that Joey will do 56, so Koby will do 57 and a half. That could still be the case on the fourth. Even if Joey eats as much as 63, Koby can better him if he has to.

Our pals Joey and Pat Bertoleti are really dickin things up fpr some would be nathans qualifiers. Because of Rich not being allowed to win on his own turf or thereabouts he will go down in history as the person to qualify as a wild card with the greatest average whicj will be about 33 and so if anyone wants to make it to the finals they better be able to have it in their ass or else.

I am under the impression that some are unaware that The Locust should be expected to eat in the San Fran, CA qaulifier, if not, will it be another Jed. D and Erik the Red battle (or Mongo)? Or is the Locust looking to go to another contest where an eater like say Humble Bob can give him a run for competition, unless Crazy Legs, Rios, Erik the Red, Jed. D or Juliet Lee can break 30. If the Locust is a snake in the grass and a true spoiler to all the mid 20 wild card eaters, then he should be expected to compete against Humble Bob today. But that is not the case. If The Locust competes in the San Fran competition and wins, basically, he was just getting great practice against the #2, and #3 ranked eaters who can out him in those 12 minutes for HDBs. Or the other thing to consider is: who will be the next eater to break 30? (there OJ Rifkin, there’s your next poll question, a good one to consider) Because all this nonsense about 40 is the next 20 is ridiculous!! First the eaters most reach 30 before something like that can be taken seriously. As for the Locust, he probably can win any other qualifier he desires after today’s Humble Bob victory. Thats CE truth.

Another point to consider is that the total for these qualifiers for some eaters are not really what they can attain. Did anyone see Eater X just joyfully put his last 1 or 2 HDB in mouth joyfully, as if he wan’t trying that much. The top eaters look to go on a tear on the 4th. As others in the above coomments have stated, Koby will always show us just a little what he is capable of. For the Brats Championship, he was in no pain, joyfully flexing and celebrating, even the Krstyals. Anytime Joey gets close to his #’s, he just kicks it up on time to win, not really showing what he can max out to. I don’t think a guy like Koby wants to come here to hand over the belt to Joey after 6 years as Champ. But deep inside, i really want Joey win the title, the problem is Koby is a machine eating person and has mastered it, and makes a living by it. How is he going to lose now. (If he can’t lose head to head, he’ll lose from stuffing his brains out and the HDBs will pour from his nostrils with bile) It would be great to see Joey beat him and I hope he does, but this Koby is a beast when comes to CE. Good luck Joey!!!

If you think Kobayashi is just staying one step ahead, maybe you should think back to 2006…the only reason he won was because he was disqualified. He could not have done another shred. He had already puked!
My only concern on the 4th of July, is that Joey is going to win by Kobayashi’s DQ. It would be a shame to watch Joey eat 67 and Kobayashi disqualified for trying to keep up. I really hope Kobayashi is able to hang in there with Joey, just so Joey can get the belt without any clouds of doubt.
If in fact Kobayashi is doing “just enough” to win, then that proves who has more heart:
“Sometimes you’re best won’t be good enough…but never let good enough be your best.” Chestnut pushes himself to his best everytime, without anyone else pushing him! Come the Fourth, it’s going to be a matter of who wants it most.
In all honesty…I’m waiting for Kobayashi to announce his retirement before the Fourth. His last chance to go out on top.

W. E. you might have a point and I remember someone making a point that koby would retire before losing to Joey and I sort of believe that because koby is not used to losing but I think if Koby shows up it is because he believes he can eat several more than 60. He probably already has done it in practice just like joey knows how many he himself can eat.

Congratulations Joey, you ate almost 60 hotdogs no matter what anyone can say, not even Kobayashi has eaten that much, I don’t know but what I think is going to happen is that if Kobayashi feels that he is not going to be able to eat more than 60, he is not going to go to Nathans on 4th of July, I don’t think he would like to be a second place after winning 6 years in a row. I can be wrong, let’s wait and see. Joey ate more what 2nd and 3rd place ate together and Lefevre is a legend, so we are talking about a whole new level of competitive eating here. I think Japanese guys (Shirota, Yamamoto, Kobayashi, etc.) will seriously need to improve their skills (capacity and swalloing) if they want to be a top level like you guys in the US are now and not only Chestnut but Pat, Chip, Bob, Tim, etc. It would be good to see someone from other country to have some good level of competitive eating, we are you guys?

W.E., 2006 did show alot of controversy with Koby’s eating, but no one of importance felt that there was a reversal from that. He wasn’t full. Sometimes that happens when you get a hiccup while swallowing.
As for eating just enough, well that is one of the strategies used to keep from reversing. If Tim Janus ate max and was ahead by 20 HDB and reversed, he would have lossed for nothing. It isn’t poor sportsmanship not doing as much as you can, it is strategy. I am impressed that Joey broke the record in the qualifier, but imagine how dumb he would have looked if he reversed. So, is this the new record now? Koby doesn’t get a chance to beat it before the 4th. Things are different on the 4th. Hopefully it will be broken again to avoid controversy.

Damn Joey! To triple the amount from your first contest two years ago when you qualified in SF is amazing. There is no doubt that you worked hard to get there, and I know that you’re even more committed in June. Koby had a reason to fear you last year, and now you’re even more of a threat on the 4th. Incredible performance. It’s the new hot dog record, but is it THE record? It seems like the only number that matters (and that people will remember) is the one the winner puts up on Coney Island. My prediction is that Jed Donohue will find the appetite he lost last year and eat 59.51 hot dogs to set a new record.

Responding to an old post . Joey Chestnut is feeding you a line of crap when he states amino acids and protein supplements are the reason he is able to injest all those hot dogs. Amino acids absorbs protein in muscle cells and doesnt increase appetite whatsoever. If Kobe is spending over $1500 a month on bodybuilding supplements , we are talking steroids which can enhance all kinds of wonders including competitive eating. These so called wonder drug supplements can not be purchased in your local vitamin shop. Get the picture!
